Alterations Recommendations

I just got the magical call that my dress came in!!  I have an appointment to go try it on and make sure everything is right with it.  I'm not 100% sure I want to have the shop I purchased my dress do the alterations - I've heard mixed reviews and the shop is about 45 minutes away on the east side, I live on the west side.  I purchased my dress from Expressions Bridal in Mentor (not sure if anybody here has experience with their alterations department or not).

Does anybody have any recommendations for having alterations done?

Re: Alterations Recommendations

  • BUMP! looking for high quality but affordable alterations.
  • I don't know what area you're looking in but Valetino's in Twinsburg was great to work with.  Reasonably priced, quick work and I was very impressed with the work she did.  http://www.clevelandtailoring.com
  • I used Julianne's Alterations in Columbia Station.  Denise was great to work with and very honest with me - basically she talked me out of a few adjustments I thought I needed and showed me that I didn't really need them and it was the bridal shop that was trying to get me to spend more than what I actually needed to.  The adjustments that the shop wanted me to have were:  bust taken in, cups added -- it was a corset back so she taught me and my MOH how to tie the back so those changes were not needed.

I had a bustle and a hem and it was around $160 for my big poofy ballgown.

  • I second Julianne's - I think my alterations were about $150 (hem and bustle) and the bustle was super complicated. I was coming from the East side (closer to Expressions) and it was worth it to go out of my way.
  • I can't recommend Karen Lockwood of Affordable Bridals more. She works at 18$/hour and she sells great shoes, veils and tiaras and great prices as well. I had hemming on like 8 layers, bustle and my veil hand-beaded and it was 100$. I can't tell you how much I loved having her do my alterations and talking to her about life.

She works from her home, and it's a little tight but she's worked on countless dresses over 30 years and did a wonderful job.
  • I purchase my dress from Kuhn's Bridal Outlet (near Mansfield) and they quoted me at $25 for taking in my bust! That's it! My dress even has beading that has to be knotted off. It might be worth the drive for you!
