Hair volume** update... it worked!!!!

edited March 2015 in Chit Chat
I know we have a makeup discussion, but can we share tips on hair too?  I am looking for something (a mousse, maybe?) to give my hair more volume. I am a blonde, with straight hair... it's a pretty color, but just lays there like Bernie, on the weekends. I want to give it a little more ooomph, but I don't want it to get tangly. Currently, I section off my hair and use a round brush and blow dry it, in small pieces, and finish with big and sexy hairspray, but it falls flat 20 minutes, later. What are some good products and techniques you use to give your hair more volume?

Re: Hair volume** update... it worked!!!!

  • I can't really help you with the tangly part ( I have curly hair) but I can recommend some products and techniques! Usually I use Shea Moisture when it's wet. It helps define my curls and give it the oomph. I then use a diffuser for my hair but I do it upside down. I repeat this process on and off throughout the morning. It prevents frizz and my hair getting too oily. Then I use Big Sexy Hair to prevent it becoming flat. So maybe try volume hair spray and do my upside down trick? Sorry I can't be more help!

  • I really wish I could help you.  My hair is exactly the same.  I leave the house looking like a VS model (or similar-ish) and arrive at destination looking like I've just woken up in ridiculous make up.  I've never found anything that's lasted all night.

I usually put a ton of mousse in, blow dry my hair, putting it in giant rollers as I go, stay like that for as long as possible, and spray it a ton.  That holds, generally, for a couple of hours, depending on weather.  Not very convenient unless you have a whole day to walk around the house like that.

  • I use Shea Moisture too buttercup!
But I also have a lion's mane. I have no choice but volume.

  • I use a blow dryer to dry my hair about 50% dry, then use a hot air brush.  I can honestly say my hair has never looked better.  It's got body and shape and it holds pretty much all day.
  • Also, the thing from the earlier thread that seemed to be the most helpful was the big velcro rollers. After you blow-dry your hair with the root spray and whatever, put it up in the rollers and spray with some good volumizing hair spray. Keep the rollers in while you do your make-up or drink your coffee or otherwise waste some time. Unroll and WOOSH! Volume.

Um.... blowdrying my hair upside down. Lol

  • Along with all of the other tricks - do you conditioner your hair? (sorry if this was already mentioned . . . )

My hairdresser told me years ago that when conditioning you should only condition from the base of your head down. If you condition the scalp it will make the hair greasy faster and it will weigh your hair down.
So I never condition because my hair is pretty short - doesn't even touch my shoulders - but before I  got it cut I would only condition from mid-neck down. Once I started doing this I noticed I could go  MUCH longer with out washing my hair or just use some dry shampoo - which is better for your hair anyway. And will eventually help with volume if you aren't washing it every day.

  • How long is your hair? If your hair is shorter (above your boobs), check out kate at the small things blog. She has various different hair lengths in her videos and has nice volume. I think the product she uses is aquage (sp?) voluming mousse, and then blow dries. It sounds like you're doing everything right, you just need the product to keep in all that work!

  • My hair is down to my mid back, now.
  • I have long (mid back or longer) fine hair.  So volume is an issue for me too!  I don't use any products other than the occasional "flexible hold" hairspray if I want it to look a bit neater, but all I do is wash it daily and use conditioner on the ends.  I use Clear shampoo and conditioner, in their "Strong Lengths" formula.  I've used other formulas and this one really helps the hair stay healthy looking without weighing it down.   I let it air dry probably 75% of the way (it happens while I'm doing the rest of my morning routine), then I blowdry it upside down with a tourmaline hair dryer (I've had the T3 from sephora for years... well worth the money). Then, once it's dry I flip back over and use a round metal brush just to clean up the ends.

What are some tips to keep hair from being greasy? I'm a natural blond and when my hair doesn't get washed, it looks like I have dark roots because my hair gets so dark when it gets oily. Also what are tips to keep hair from getting tangled. I wash my hair every day because brushing through it is such a pain until I shampoo and condition it.
I don't know how I manage to get greasy and tangled hair when I don't wash it... but I make that shit happen!
  • I wish I knew on that one, I have to wash it daily.

Definitely invest in some dry shampoo.  I can't recommend it highly enough.  If you get one that's a powder formula, you have to work it in to the roots, but it will lighten the hair a little and I find that it helps with brassiness (not sure whether natural blonds have that issue).

On the tangling bit, try a spray leave in conditioner on the lengths.  That should help you get through it.  And brush it in sections from tips, working towards the scalp as you get the knots out.  It's a pain with really long hair, but definitely makes it easier.

  • @themuffinman16 It seems like my hair is similar to yours. Have you tried dry shampoo? I like Batisee (Not 100% sure about the spelling). They have some options that include a bit of color which is great when you need your roots done- Oh wait, it's just me that waits waaay to long to try to get an appointment with my stylist so I have to walk around with bad hair... My bad, never mind.. -  ;) Also my tangles have been way better since I started co-washing. There are a lot of articles about co-washing but highlights are use conditioner in your hair 1st, like it's shampoo, let it sit and absorb and then before rinsing scrub shampoo into your roots and rinse it all out at once. It works great for me. My stylist even mentioned that my hair seems healthier and has less breakage!
  • Thanks, ladies!!
  • @themuffinman16, my hair is similar to yours, but dark. My solution involves a few components.

    1. Take hair, skin & nail multivitamins, which help my fine hair survive blowdrying.
    2. Only condition the ends.
    3. Spray damp roots with bumble & bumble thickening spray.
    4. Blowdry upside down
    5. Once my hair is dry, and combed through, I toss my hair upside down again, gather it together (like a ponytail on the top of my head, then run my hands to the ends), and roll it down to the roots on top of my head (looks like a loop bun top knot). I hold that in place with a plastic claw. I'll leave it up like that as long as I can (at least 15 minutes, but hours can't hurt). By taking the weight off my roots while my hair cools down, it gives much more body. The ends also get a soft wave.

I am so going to try this haha. My hair kinks very easily so I try not to do anything to it once I blow dry it, even putting it behind my ears gives it a weird wave.

muffin, i have long hair as well and I cant seem to find a product I love for volume for my hair at this length. I have a few things that I liked when it was shorter, but just the weight of the hair is heavy now. I even got layers cut in to try to get more volume. Now, it does help, but still not as big as I like.

I've also heard good things about batisse in the past, but whenever I bought it I couldn't find the original, which is apparently the best. Only their 'special' or scented or whatever ones, and I didn't like them. Also going to look for the original again.

  • My hair is straight and very fine, and it's long right now (upper back) in preparation for a wedding up-do. Blow drying and products damage my hair too much and don't really work that well (like the OP, it also falls flat again after a few hours). I also hate spending more than 2 minutes on my hair every morning. So, I've just embraced the "smooth and sleek" look and I stopped using everything altogether beyond shampoo and conditioner. My hairdresser always comments on how healthy my hair is since I've started doing less with it! The best news is that the sleek (low volume) look is actually really fashionable right now!
