Suit suggestions

Finding a suit for FI has been much harder than I thought it was going to be. He's very picky and that's fine- I want him to feel his best on our wedding day and love his suit just like I love my dress. The suits that we've seen at Milton's, Men's Wearhouse, etc have not been as fitted and modern as he likes and always have longer jackets. He definitely wants a vest/waistcoat too which limits the options a little bit.

He likes this first suit from Asos but of course almost all of the pants are sold out. The second one I like but he says he doesn't like the look of the material. Anyone have any suggestions on where else to find suits that fit like this? We're a little less than 3 1/2 months out and I have no idea what's he's going to wear. He seems much less concerned about it than I do even though he wants something so specific. I suggested maybe getting something custom but he's not showing any interest in that and time is running out.

Re: Suit suggestions

  • We've definitely looked at slim fit suits on Mens Wearhouse, Macy's, Nordstroms, etc. The jackets are too long and not slim enough/the right ft. The Asos suits have shorter jackets and are more fitted. I don't even know how to look for exactly what he wants, that's why this is so difficult. :(

  • OP where do you live? Doey's suggestion of Macy's is good because they're known for having great sales and rewards.  What's your estimated budget? Also, is this something he's adding to his collection to wear again (other weddings, funerals, job interviews) or does he intend this to be a one-time wear?
I would check Express for slim fit trousers and jackets, personally. Places like Banana Republic and JCrew would probably work as well. Then you've got Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, Saks, etc for higher end.

  • www.combatgent.com They have more modern fits and styles. H purchased two for our wedding (one gray, one navy and I let him pick which one he wanted to wear) and has since bought 3 more for work. Affordable and the quality is pretty great for the price.
  • @thisismynickname We're in Boston. He hasn't seen anything he likes at Macy's. I checked Jcrew, Banana Republic & Express thinking they would definitely have something he likes but he's so damn picky! We don't have a set budget for the suit but I'd like to stay under $600. He would most likely wear it again. He started off wanting gray but now wants to navy which I actually like better anyways.

@cupcait927 I think I checked combatgent but I can't remember. I will take another look! Thanks!

I really think he should have just had something custom made since he's being so specific but I can't make him. He might just have to settle if he doesn't figure this out soon.

  • Ahhh. Well, picky is his problem. Good luck!

@lavenderfields13 I just looked again after I mentioned it to you and it looks like their jackets are a little longer than maybe what your FI wants. However, my H mentioned just yesterday that he was told on their FB page that they are in the process of rolling out a bunch of new designs shortly so maybe they'll have something a little more fitted and modern soon.

ETA - I saw your comment about getting something custom made. Really, that's his best bet if you could only convince him to do it. I kind of want H to get a suit custom made because he's got some weird proportions going on.

  • @cupcait927 yeah I just looked again and remembered why he wouldn't like them. I'll keep checking back for new suits though. Like @thisismynicknamae said - it's his problem but it's stressing ME out of course.

    Thanks for trying to help!

  • For $600, you could have something custom done that will fit him perfectly. I recommend this a lot on the boards, but it can be way better value than getting something off the rack and then getting it tailored. I don't know much about your area but a little googling should find you some options.

We order FI's through a company that does fittings a couple times a year in our city so that we don't have to try to get the measurements right ourselves. The suits are made to measure and are 100% wool (no poly blends) and we are able to specify absolutely everything from the width and shape of the lapels to the slant of the pockets. FI gets vests made too each time.

You have to do your research a bit and check the reviews (and make sure they're well made with good fabrics and proper lining, not the cheap fused stuff), but if you go this way he can get exactly the fit he wants. A lot of those companies even guarantee a perfect fit and will either remake or give you your alterations free if it's not quite right.

My husband was super picky when it came to his suit.  He is very fashionable and fell in love with a suit that didn't exist (the colors in the online picture had really been altered and it had obviously been tailored differently when we saw the real thing).  He ended up buying, and returning, four suits I think before settling on the fifth suit. He got his suit at Barneys and it came in at just over $600 on sale. People thought it was weird that he tried so many suits but I pointed out that no one bats an eye when a bride tries on 30 different dresses at five different locations before picking the "one."

Your FI might need to look at high end suits to get that modern look he is after.  Try Saks, Barneys, Bloomingdales, Lord and Taylor. While a lot of suits might be above your $600 budget, you should be able to find some within it.  And remember that suits can be tailored.  Obviously you don't want to get an 80s car salesman suit and try to turn it into a 2015 Armani style but if he can pick a suit soon, he can have it made into what he wants (within reason) by a good tailor.

Zara is another good, fashionable, and cheaper alternative, and if he is not adverse to shopping online he could try TopMan/Topshop.

It does sound like a bespoke suit might be your best bet.  The other option is to just let him take his time looking for a suit. You say he seems less concerned, so let him be less concerned.  He is an adult and as long as he knows when the date is that he needs to have his suit by, he will probably figure it out on his own. I know you only have a few months, so as the time gets closer, he might get a little less picky.  If he wants suggestions on where to look, give him suggestions but let him figure it out on his own.
  • @jasperandopal I definitely feel the same way in that the guys should be allowed to be picky- no one would tell a bride to just pick any dress and be done with it.

@amelisa @jasperandopal thank you for your suggestions. I'm going to check out the higher end suits online. I suggested custom again and he feels like that is TOO overwhelming with all the options- can't win with this guy haha.
He might end up ordering another Asos suits to see if that will work and hopefully the quality is decent enough. I've pretty much helped all I can so he's on his own after this.

    thanks for all the suggestions!

  • Suit Supply is a fair value and has a lot of different cuts and fabrics to choose from. They do have a made to measure program, but I would be hesitant to recommend it (much less bespoke), as you don't have a lot of time for a remake if things go wrong.

I would warn against going with a jacket that short, as it will soon look very dated (if not effeminate).

Since the suits from Asos are so cheap I'm not too worried about it looking dated soon. Unfortunately FI just doesn't like most of the basic styles that are out there. As for looking effeminate- the model wearing it looks pretty hot and manly to me so not worried about that either.

Has he tried the Bar III slim or extra slim fit suits from Macy's? FI has one in navy and it is a sharp looking suit.

  • @blabla89 I just looked and saw a few that look really nice! They may not be his exact vision but I'm going to show him- he needs to be open to other options if the Asos suit falls through. Of course all the ones I think he might like aren't available in our store so he can go try them on in person :(

Definitely will have him check those out though- thank you!

Sorry, I can see how I was unclear - I meant dated in terms of the wedding pictures, not long term use. Of course, some will like the novelty, others may cringe.

Also, I wasn't commenting on the model himself, only that they cut women's jackets above the bum like that, which is likely why you are having trouble finding them.

Some Macy's have very different selections than others. Since you mentioned you're in Boston, the one in Downtown Crossing carries a lot of younger/edgier brands that aren't available at other Macy's. There are some boutiques in the South End, or on Newbury St., that could be a good bet, too.
  • @mandymost thank you! I want to go to the jewelers building soon so maybe when we're there we can check out Macy's if he hasn't ordered anything yet

  • I think the slim cut suits won't look dated in my opinion. I think slim cut suits look better on guys who are smaller. V is maybe 5'6/5'7 and only weighs maybe 15 pounds heavier than me? So overall, he isn't the biggest guy around. I think he looks awesome in slim cut suits and navy makes his blue eyes/red hair pop. So I'm with you @lavenderfields13. Now if I could only convince V that. He feels like he is trying to be fashion forward in the slim cut, boo ha.
