Good morning everyone! I don't usually start conversations but I am bored at work and I love hearing proposal stories (I am a hopeful romatic) so share yours with me! Did you help pick out the ring? Did you know it was coming? Was he acting strange around the time it happened?

If you are NEY, how would you want to be proposed to? Do you want a say in the ring?

I am a pretty simple gal so I wouldn't want anything over the top, nor do I want an audience but that's just me. I go back and forth on whether I would want to help with the ring but I think I will have a say anyway since he asked my opinion a couple years ago. (We still aren't engaged yet because, long story short, at the time he was looking for a ring he was working FT and sadly was laid off. He has been doing contracts off and on since). I have said a couple things but mostly stayed out of it when he was looking and gave my opinion only when he asked. Anyway, tell me your stories or fantasies! Happy Thursday!

I'm copying and pasting. This was back on 7/1/11.

I'm sitting here at 6:30 in the morning in the chair that changed my life. Ok, the chair didn't change my life, but I was sitting here about 17 hours ago when J said those magical words 'Will you marry me?' Little did I know what he had planned for the rest of the day!

First, the story: J had booked us into a hotel/resort for the 4th of July weekend. We both took Friday off, and checked in early. Not even five minutes after we checked in, we came out to check out the patio. We're standing outside when he says to me 'You're going to be mad at me.' I'm thinking he's going to give me some story about how the ring isn't ready yet, but instead he says 'I can't find your grandmother's ring.' I flat out said, 'That's not true. There's no way you lost that ring.' But I was a little worried, so I sat down, and he says something again about not having the ring, but then he says 'It's ok, though, I know where the diamonds are.' (Or something like that, it's a little hazy at this point!). He then pulls the ring box from his pocket, gets down on one knee, and shows me the rings. I'm crying, shocked, excited, and wowed by these gorgeous rings. So he looks at me and says 'What's your answer?' and I say 'You haven't asked me anything!!' Then he asks, and I say yes.

After a few phone calls to family and friends, we went to a nearby spa for a couple hours. We came back to get ready for dinner, and he was seriously rushing me. We have a glass of wine and go to the restaurant. When I go to sit down, he says 'Can I sit there?' I'm confused, but say Sure! We have a lovely dinner, during which I can't help but tell the waiter about our happy news (and I can't stop staring at the ring!).

So, when we're done with dinner, J says he wants to take some video of the lobby, which is beautiful. So he's walking behind me, videotaping, and he says 'why don't you walk on the other side, no more to the left.' So I walk around a corner and there are about 40 of our friends and family. I start crying (and possibly hyper-ventilating), when I see one of my girlfriends who lives in Chicago. More tears. Then another girlfriend who lives in Florida. More tears. Then friends that live in Michigan. It was so overwhelming to see everyone in one place... and the level of planning and stress that Jess went through to make it all happen, it just makes me love him more.

Did you help pick out the ring? No. And I ended up not loving my ring as an everyday option, so I've had the diamond re-set since then.
Did you know it was coming? Yep. He had given a few inadvertent clues along the way. But I was still totally caught off-guard. Both by the actual engagement and by the surprise party.

H and I looked at rings together in June 2011. I tried on every style under the sun and figured out which ones I liked best but I left the final decision up to him.

My grandfather had a stroke at the end of July and passed away at the beginning of August and it was a really rough time for me. I found out later that H was about to propose when all of that happened.

He ended up waiting a few weeks and on a random Tuesday at the end of August, I got home from work and set my bag down. H was already home and I heard him tell me that he had something for me in the bedroom. When I went in, he was handing me flowers and told me that it was because he first told me he loved me 4 years before. I told him that's sweet but that he first said 'I love you' in September. We went back and forth for a minute or two about this and then he said "Well, I also have this for you." And he pulled out the ring and I realized what was going on at that moment. He got down on his knee and started to put it on my finger and asked, "Will you?" And I was like, "WILL I WHAT?!?!?!" because he obviously needed to ask the full question. So he said the 4 magical words and I screamed "YES" and we hugged and kissed and I couldn't stop smiling and staring at my beautiful ring. The end.

Copying and pasting from April 2014:

We went out to dinner (got all dressed up and everything) and came back to my apartment. He popped the question while we were playing co-op levels in Portal 2. He talked about how much we've been through since we started dating, how we've always worked to make it right with each other when we screw up, and how there's no one he'd rather come home to.

Did you help pick out the ring? Yes, I did. I knew I wanted moissanite; he sent me 12 settings and I narrowed it down to 4. He made the final selection.

Did you know it was coming? Yes. More or less, we scheduled it. I knew he wasn't going to hang on to the ring for a long time after he got it. He got the ring on a Wednesday; the next Saturday was the first time he would have a chance to ask, while making it a nice day (something that was really important to him).

@swazzle What a great story and a beautiful ring! I am sorry about your grandfather. I have no grandparents left and haven't for several years. I would give my right arm to see them again. I was engaged over a decade ago and he broke it off due to cold feet, thank god since I realized later he was not the man of my dreams, just a friend. Anyway, I remember my grandmother saying "Don't worry, I was a late bride too (my grandmother is a strict Italian catholic), I didn't marry until I was 27. Now every year since I turned 27 I think about how disappointed she must be that I am still unwed with no children. I know it's silly but we had such a great relationship and I wonder what she would be saying to me now

H really wanted to go hiking at a particular spot one weekend in December. We spent the first part of the day doing some Christmas shopping and walking around a cute little mountain town before finally driving up to the trail his co-worker had suggested to us. At this point it was 4:30 and the sun was starting to set so we settled for a short hike to the waterfalls rather than a longer hike up the mountain. We get to the top and just hang out for awhile taking pictures. The dog started eating something on the ground so I turned around to reprimand her and when I turned back around H was down on one knee holding a ring box in his hand. I was so shocked and surprised that I yelled "You jerk!" before any other sort of reaction could come out. He was so shocked and I finally started laughing and tearing up and said you have to ask, so he asked me to marry him, obviously I said yes, and we kissed and went home and had a celebratory date night.

I definitely didn't notice him acting weird (other than the insistence on going hiking to this one particular spot), and I definitely didn't notice that he had apparently been carrying around a ginormous box all day. He said he brought the ring along in case the moment presented itself, he didn't have any particular plan otherwise.

Sean proposed to me on Febuary 15th 2013 with this absolutely beautiful ring. He told me on Valentine's Day as we were eating our dinner that he had a surprise dinner for tomorrow evening. I wanted to know so bad where we were going but all he said was that I needed to be ready by 5:30 to leave for dinner. Friday afternoon I left work early to go home and get ready. Sean picked me up and drove to Buckhead while trying to confuse me on the way making me think we were going other places. In my mind I thought we were going to a restaurant in Atlanta somewhere when he finally pulled up to the Ritz.

He said that there was a restaurant inside that he made reservations for at 6:30. Once we got to the restaurant he stopped me and said he actually made reservations for 7:00 and that he got us a room for the night. I think my jaw dropped to the floor. He took me up to the room and opened the door to find rose petals and candles all over the place.

There was a spectacular view and the sun was setting. It was so beautiful. By this point I knew he had something else planned besides dinner. That's when he walked me over to the view and got down on one knee and proposed. It was so beautiful! I've never been so surprised or amazed by all the planning he did around me. I never knew anything. We had a fabulous dinner afterwards! It was a night I will never forget! I can't wait to call Sean my husband and be his wife!

I really cherish the time we have alone together and I have social anxiety and I hate the spotlight so I want a private, quiet proposal. He agrees about the proposal part but not the me helping with the ring part. He wants it to be a total surprise I guess lol

I picked out my ring. I knew it was coming at some point, but I was totally caught off guard the day he did it.

It was the week before Memorial Day weekend last year. We were going to Maine to visit my family for the long weekend, and I had hoped that we would be engaged before that visit, but had resigned myself to the fact that it wasn't going to happen before we got there.

It was FI's night to make dinner, and he texted me later in the day to see if I wanted to go out for dinner instead. I got home first, and took the dog out, like I do every day. He was home when I got back to the apartment, and when I walked in the house, he was halfway down the stairs and FRANTIC about where the dog was. I was like "I was walking her... like I do EVERY day..." I was super confused.

SO we head out to dinner. We get there, and he's being REALLY weird. Not even looking at the menu, not knowing what beer he wants, it was really strange. But we have a fine dinner, and head home.

(I was texting @swazzle, @hummingbird125, @buddysmom80, and @csousa1 during dinner about what a weirdo he was being, just for the record.)

We get home & I say that I'm going to go put on comfy clothes, because, that's what I do as soon as I walk in the door. I come back from the bedroom in my yoga pants & t-shirt, and he's just standing in the middle of the kitchen. I go over & hug him & thank him for dinner.

I tell him I love him, he says "how much?" I say "AAAALLL the loves." He says "Forever & ever?" I say "Forever & ever!" (this is a "thing" we do). He says "Forever & ever?" as he pulls the ring out of his pocket.

Annnddd then I died. Actually, I just started laughing, and saying "OMG is this for real!?" and he tried to just hand me the ring, to which I stuck my (SHAKING) hand out & said "YOU HAVE TO PUT IT ON!!" and then I realized that he didn't actually say "will you marry me?" so I said "YOU DIDN'T ASK THE THING! YOU HAVE TO ASK THE THING!!" And he finally asked, and I said yes

And then we called/FaceTimed everyone and it was the best night ever. :-D

I love the stories!! Makes me think of my sister's engagement. She spent the night at my house all the time and her BF was in Iraq at the time. She usually gets up before me, grabs some cash and goes to Caribou for us in the morning. So she gets back and I am still sleeping and then suddenly she bursts in my room and tells me "Jason proposed, Jason proposed!!" I was like "Yea right, Ang" (they had been dating like 6 years, he was away for the Army and in general just sort of slow at these things so I didn't believe her). She was like no really! He proposed and is getting me a ring when he got home. I realized when I pulled the blanket from my face and saw her face that she was telling the truth! So we yelled and screamed and then grabbed our coffee and drove straight to my parent's house 6 miles away.

So he gets back from Iraq and my sister started looking at rings and wanted a pear shape. Jason was saving his money and they were looking for a long time. So one day she is in the shower, yes the shower, and he comes in and asks "So, you wanted a pear shape diamond?" and she says yes and he was like "Like this?" and shows her a ring. And, in Angela fashion, says "Yea, where did you get that?" He said "I bought it." and she was like, "Oh, why?" She has no clue this ring is for her and thought maybe he borrowed it to show her (?) so Jason has to actually explain that he bought her a damn ring! It is a funny story in my family because this is the same sister who had no idea that star fish and sea horses were real until she went to an aquarium in DC with her BF. She isn't dumb by any means, just a little bit in the clouds at times. It was hilarious! I still laugh about it.

I love reading these! What a sweet way to start Thursday. I'm going to copy and paste from my AW post last summer:

We were at dinner for my birthday, and apparently everyone knew but me. He had 5 gifts wrapped and asked me to open them in a certain order and see if I could figure out the theme. The first gift was a sixpence that was made into a necklace; the second gift was a handkerchief embroidered with my name and birthday in blue; the third was a shirt of his I always wear to sleep in; the fourth was my mom's engagement ring from my dad; and the fifth was a new center stone and a promise to design a ring together. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence for my shoe. It was so sweet, thoughtful, and creative. He really knocked it out of the park!

It snowed yesterday and I got out of work early so I'm in my sweats playing Xbox (I'd like to just add here that I'm glad I didn't take my bra off too because I would've given myself a black eye from all the jumping up and down, anyway). FI gets home and is acting completely normal. I'm showing him all the Christmas cards that came in, I'm nagging him about snowblowing the driveway and he's like "did you see the Christmas lights outside? In the snow?" I'm like "no, not really" I'm thinking like they burned out or something. So he goes "let's go outside and look at them!" I'm just thinking in my head this is the weirdest freaking thing ever and I don't like the cold, why are we doing this??? Then he's telling me to go get Quigley's coat in the basement so now I'm like okay we're going for a walk in the snow, that's cool.

I get back upstairs we put Quigley's coat and leash on and head out to the front of the house. He's like "the lights look so pretty right now" I'm like "this is so not like you" but I'm just rolling with it at this point bc FI is not a holiday person so I'm like this is a big step. We stand in front of the house and we're just looking at the lights and our house and then FI is like "oh there's something wrong with Quigley's coat" so he gets down on ONE KNEE and asked me if I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him and Quigley. I freaked out I don't even remember what I said, I probably swore. We went back inside and he put the ring on my finger and then we called all the people.

I apologize in advance for this wall of text. I am PMSing and got sentimental.

SO. I had wanted a Christmas or Christmas Eve proposal for the longest time - basically since we had been together. We weren't anywhere near getting engaged for our first Christmas together. Before our second, I'm sure I had little twinges of hope, but nothing major. Leading up to our third Christmas together however, I had imagined it more times than I'm proud to admit. I never EVER told FI that I wanted to get engaged during the holidays. Not once. I didn't want him to feel bad if it didn't/couldn't happen then. At the end of October/beginning of November of that year (2013) we were out having cocktails at a nice bar, and he (nervously) brought up "the future" (!!!) and wanted to know if I still liked photos of rings I had shown him many months ago (during a very drunken conversation that he initiated), or if I had different tastes now. This is when I knew he was at least thinking about buying a ring/proposing in the near future. That was the only hint I got.

On Christmas Eve, I was in a kind of funky mood because although I was super SUPER excited about Xmas (my favorite holiday x1000) I was sad that I wouldn't be getting engaged during Christmastime. FI hadn't been acting strangely at all, hadn't seemed to be saving money any moreso than usual, and we didn't have any fancy Xmas Eve plans. I spent the whole day cooking, and we went to an Alamo Drafthouse to see American Hustle that night. I didn't even have time to shower that day, so my hair was greasy and I felt gross. On the drive home, he put "our song" on (Your Hand in Mine - which I'll be walking down the aisle to!!!) and we just listened and didn't talk, and I remember feeling super happy and content right then.

When we got home, I let the dog out and said "Is it pajama time now?" and he replied "No, not yet." which was a HUGE red flag. We do not "hang out" in jeans in our apt. It is sweatpants, yoga pants, or no pants basically 24/7. I definitely thought that was strange but didn't think too much of it. After letting the dog back in, I went on my laptop for a while and check FB, while FI just... kind of stood around the kitchen or something. It was strange and I DEFINITELY should have known. Finally I got up, and said "Well I don't care what you do, but I'm putting on pajamas." and I went into the bedroom. I distinctly remember standing in the closet and putting on shorts and a sweatshirt and thinking "Is there ANY chance he's....about to propose?" but I thought I was just reading into things too much, so I tried to push the thought out of my head so that I would't ruin an otherwise nice Xmas Eve. After changing, I walked back into the living room, and knew.

He had turned off all of the lights except for the white lights on the Xmas tree, and was standing in front of it, just looking at me. My heart was beating through my chest and I was just thinking "OMG IS HE DOING THIS RIGHT NOW, OMGOMGOMGOMG" and I walked up to him an kissed him, and he said "I have something for you" and I totally. freaking. lost it. I started SOBBING. I'm talking snot, tears streaming down my face, almost couldn't breath. I think I just squeaked out a "really?" before he told me to listen because he had some things he wanted to say. By the way, he was totally crying too, and shaking, and I couldn't possibly have loved him more in that moment. He had a whole beautiful little speech byt the only things I remember from it were "I want to marry you. I want to have a family with you." and then he reached behind the tree and pulled out the ring box. He did it all perfectly - got down on one knee, used my full name, and even put it on the right finger :-)

We kept it ourselves that night because we were going to my parents' house for Christmas the next day, and wanted to tell the whole family in person. I remember we made Angry Balls (Angry Orchard cider + Fireball) because that sounded a lot better than the champagne he had bought, and we just snuggled on the couch for HOURS and talked about it all.

My FI threw me a surprise birthday party last summer (my birthday is Christmas Eve) because I've only had a couple parties in my life thanks to the holiday birthday. He did a big elaborate thing at the party in front of my friends, pretending the ring fell out of a pinata he was making me hit.

It was pretty embarrassing, truthfully. I'm not into being the centre of attention. But it was a nice thought and he did take care to only invite my best friends, so...yeah. I'm not mad about it or anything but the big "show" thing was not really something I needed or wanted.

We'd bought the ring a couple months earlier. Picked it out together online, it came in, I tried it on, and he hid it until he could get his big elaborate plan together.

I totally had this moment, too! When we checked into the hotel room, we kind of threw our bags on the ground. I said 'I'm going to go check out the patio, and as I started walking over to the door, he was digging around in his bad. I thought 'I wonder if he's looking around for the ring.' but then I thought 'Nah, he's totally going to do it at dinner tonight.' Nope! Two minutes later, I was engaged! Not showered, wearing jeans and I think a 'Nike Athletics' t-shirt with my hair in a ponytail.

Awww these are making me so happy! I love hearing the stories of the ladies who were already engaged or married when I started hanging out here.

(Mostly copied from last May)

My FI (!) goes to a huge church, and they record their church news/announcements and show the video on huge screens on Sunday mornings. FI is one of the people who does this, so he's on the screen every 4 or 6 weeks.

Late Saturday afternoon we were at my place, and he says he has something to show me. So we sit down, and he starts a video on his computer which looks like the church news. I'm thinking "Why are you showing me tomorrow's news? And when did you go in to record this anyways?" About 7 seconds into the video he turned to the girl that he records with and kicked her out...and said that this had nothing to do with the news and everything to do with me. The rest of the video was everything he wanted to say in his proposal, until he turned it back over to himself for the actual question. It was the sweetest thing and I love how much effort he put into the whole thing, and now I'm sitting at work grinning like a crazy person!

It was perfect and private AND I never have to worry about forgetting what he said!

ETA: My first question after we calmed down was "Please don't tell me this is playing at church tomorrow? Because if it is I'm staying home!"

Did you help pick out the ring? Yes. He had told me that I needed to show him what styles I liked, and he actually found the style that my ring is based on. We went and tried it on a couple of times, to be sure it was what I wanted and figure out what size stone would be best. Then he went to the jeweler his family uses and had it made.

Did you know it was coming? Sort of. I knew when the ring had been ordered but didn't know how long it would take. I was pretty sure that he'd gone to see my parents and my sister a few days earlier (although he did a really good job of trying to hide that), and I accidentally saw a text from his sister about it maybe happening that weekend.

Was he acting strange around the time it happened? Not really? He actually meant to do it hours earlier at his place, but I'd gone to the gym at his parents' house and was taking forever to dry my hair and get ready, since we were supposed to be going shopping. He actually sat me down to do it and then decided we didn't have enough time since his parents had a house showing. He was sort of huffy about how long I was taking to get ready, but that's nothing new!

My proposal story I shared on Monday so I won't rehash that again here (read it here). But I figured I would answer the questions too.

Did you help pick out the ring? I wanted some say in it, and he also wanted to make sure that it was a ring I loved, but whenever I would suggest looking he would refuse. So finally Thanksgiving night we were at home and since it was a hot topic with the family at dinner it was on our mind and we started talking about it and he said why don't we look online at some rings. He didn't want to go to a store together because that would have been too stressful for him. So we looked on Blue Nile's website and I told him what I liked and we looked at some stones and he got an idea of how much what he wanted to get me would cost. He told me that his sister wanted to go and help him pick it out, so I had already known this and in early November had texted her the stats of what I liked and didn't like and all of that. They went when I was home for Christmas with my family to ring shop, and while he had told me he was going ring shopping the day after Xmas he lied to me that day and said he wasn't when he actually had gone earlier. Turns out he had texted my mom a picture of the ring and I was at lunch with my mom and she frantically hid her phone and I was completely oblivious.

Did you know it was coming? My best friend who was in on the plan as far back as last summer when he told her he was going to propose (he originally had wanted to do it in December when my mom and sister were visiting but our fall cruise hurt him financially so he couldn't do it in time). I had been venting to her for a while because I was getting stressed out because he was saying things (probably to throw me off) but they really triggered me and upset me. He had promised me he was proposing before his birthday (beginning of May), but other than that I had no idea. But my best friend accidentally let slip one day that he had the ring in his physical possession. And he proposed like 2 weeks later. In the moment though, I was so groggy from being woken up that I was not expecting it at all in the moment and was completely surprised.

Was he acting strange around the time it happened? Funny thing was he had been acting weird from around the time that the ring was shipped (3 weeks earlier)...he was uber affectionate and lovey dovey but just acting strange, not sleeping, and he had this weird thing with his jaw that is triggered by stress...but by Friday night (he knew he was going to do it Friday night or Saturday morning) he was so over it and wanted it just to be done with because the anxiety was killing him, that he was actually acting very normal. I texted my best friend, because Friday night we had a fancy dinner planned and I told her I wonder if he's going to propose after dinner, but said I doubted it because he was acting too normal! Little did I know.....

His family invited my family and friends over for a party last night. Once everyone important to us was there, he took me aside and asked me to follow him. We went outside on the front steps of his parents' house, and he told me that he had been trying to find the right moment for weeks, but then realized that morning that any moment would be the right moment and wanted to ask me right away. He got down on one knee with the ring and asked me right then and there. I screamed "YES!" and started jumping up and down and cried. He put the ring on my finger and we kissed, and then we went back inside, but didn't join everyone before taking a few deep breaths. Then we went back downstairs to the party, FI found his wine glass and dinged it a few times with a fork to get everyone's attention, and announced to everyone that we were engaged. Everyone screamed in excitement and all at once started hugging us. It was absolutely perfect, and I can't wait to start planning!

To answer your questions, I did help pick out my ring, but initially he wanted to do it the completely traditional way and surprise me. He started ring shopping on his own and one day he was acting really weird about what he did all morning while I was at a hair appointment, and he finally told me that he went ring shopping but got extremely overwhelmed. I told him I would send him a few pictures of ones that I liked, and I did, but he was still overwhelmed about the center stone. So then I gave him minimum diamond specs that I would be happy with that were well within the budget he gave me, and thought that was that. He got really upset and overwhelmed again one night because my minimum specs weren't good enough for him, and what he wanted to give me was out of his price range. So finally we just went to a jeweler together, I picked out the setting, and we picked out the loose center stone together, but after that I didn't know anything else about it (including when the ring was ready) until he proposed.

I also knew when he asked my parents for their blessing, because my parents told me and my mom just about had a heart attack and started asking me all about planning, and I was just like "Chill Mom, we aren't engaged yet!". I had a feeling he was going to do it around Christmas or New Year's when we were back in NY with our families so that we didn't have to spend hours calling and skyping with everyone, but I didn't know exactly when he was going to do it. The night of the party, he was acting a little strange, but I didn't think much of it until he pulled me aside and asked me to put on my coat without telling me why. I knew right then and there that it was happening.

I'm on mobile so I'm giving the short version.

It is our tradition since we moved to BC to go skiing on our anniversary. So for our 9th (Dec 2013) we drove out to Sun Peaks to ski for two days. Due to our work schedules, we couldn't actually ski that day so we went snowshoeing instead. I totally knew it was about to happen but the moment itself was still a surprise! We were in the middle of the snowy forest at sunset when he asked me to turn around in a slightly weird tone. Poor guy. I'd been having fun and chattering away and he'd been holding the ring trying to find a good spot for at least five minutes and couldn't get me to shut up. We didn't announce it until our mini vacation was over which was fun.

H designed my ring so I did have input. We each had specifics we liked in rings I tried on so he combined them all in a custom ring. I love it so much. Picture 1 from right after he proposed, picture 2 from our wedding.

I knew it was coming since it was basically assumed between us it was happening on that trip. Plus I saw him slip the box into his ski jacket so.. yeah. He was acting super nervous but that didn't shock me. Poor guy knew 10000% I was saying yes but was so stressed about what to say and when to do it. He ended up forgetting his planned speech but the fact it was from the heart in the moment was even better.
