Why do people not do research?

So I work for a very small timeshare/guest house place in NOLA.  It has 18 rooms.   Small rooms.  Filled with large old antique furniture.  I think too large, but that is what boss-man likes.

So I got an email from guests checking in next weekend.    The email says they 2 rooms they rented are for babysitting during a receptions.      Umm, okay?

First we do not have a  banquet area.  So that means the wedding is either next door or at one of the places across the street.  I'm just guessing though.

They are asking (demanding) for conjoining rooms.   Which makes sense, however THEY DO NOT EXIST AT OUR LOCATION.  None, zero. Not only that we have a narrow building with all the rooms on the same side.    Add in timeshare owners get to use their deeded room.  Well, I'm very limited on moving guests around to even get them on the same floor, let alone next to each other.

They want an early check-in to baby-proof the unit (as in 10 or 11am).  Yeah, well we are 100% full the night before.   We only have 1-2 housekeepers.   Early check-ins are not guaranteed.  Being NOLA, you can imagine guests are not normally running out the door early.  Nope they complain about our 10  am check-out.

Let's got back to baby-proofing. Yeah, as I said these rooms are small with lots of big furniture. There is little room for kids to be running around.  They want to move lamps and stuff.   Yeah, good luck with that.

God this sounds anti-kids, but I don't our rooms used as a day care.

UPDATE - they just told me the wedding reception is about 7 blocks away.   Yeah, this sounds like awesome planning.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Re: Why do people not do research?

  • WTF? That doesn't sound kid-friendly at all! I feel for the baby sitter. From what you describe it sounds like it will be a nightmare to watch a bunch of kids there.

  • We are far from kid friendly.   Or at least kids who need babysitting friendly.

Why didn't they just find a Days Inn or a La Quinta or something if they needed all this extra stuff??? Why did they book with such a boutiquey sounding place for their babysitting needs? This just makes ZERO sense.

  • It's not anti-kids of you to recognize this is a terrible idea. I think it's pro-kids.

These people sound fun. I want to go to their wedding. Heavy sarcasm.

YES, this! I don't get it! Sounds like a trainwreck.

  • That's A LOT of demands to be making for having done 0 research. Come on, people.

Maybe make a phone call before booking the rooms. Just a quick little, "Hi, Hotel. We're thinking of doing X. Could your hotel acommodate such a thing? No? Ok, then I won't fuck up royally. Thanks!"

exactly.   If you have a unique situation you should call the place directly and ask questions. It's never a good idea to make assumptions.   We are not the Marriott, never claim to be.

We are in across the street from the FQ.  Our building was built in the 1700's or 1800's. We are just not a good fit for situation.

  • Major planning fail. You should probably charge a security deposit. I feel a broken lamp is in your future. That and a bumped head and a few stubbed toes. The poor sitter.

I wonder what other planning fails this wedding has.

  • Recipe for disaster. Maybe if you're not very accommodating, they will just cancel their reservation. You could even offer to let hem cancel with no penalties!!!

What do they mean "baby proof"? How long does it take to plug some plastic things into the outlet? I hope they aren't planning to tape things to furniture edges or anything..

Sounds like this couple is going to have a sizeable bill for damages, depending on the ages of the kids.

Your guest house venue doesn't sound like a damn romper room ><

  • I was pretty clear we are not kid friendly.     They can cancel up until 4pm the day before without penalty.    I wish they would cancel.  I could sell the unit no issue.

  • Um. That is ridiculous. It makes zero sense to book with a place without knowing if that place can't accommodate your specific needs. I mean hell, I've been asking every reception venue I've called if they're handicap accessible before I even tell them guest list numbers, and handicap accessibility isn't even an uncommon need.

  • Is your hotel the cheapest place in that 7 block radius?  I would have to wonder why the bride picked this place to have the babysitting?

Also, I'm not a parent yet, but I would not want my kid 7 blocks away from me in this situation.  Especially if they are being watched by a stranger.  I'd rather be much closer so that I could pop-in, if I wanted.

Maybe they're worried about the baby getting stuck under the bed, lolo. Maybe they just need help and advice, OK?!

Actually I think the problem is they rely too much on google.  Google doesn't tell you everything.  Do not specify not suitble  for child day car during a reception.

If you have unique situations then you should call.

On other note, even if you Google people flat out do not read.   Our booking.com listing says extra roll away beds are not available.  Cribs are not available.  Not this reservations, but I get a lot of please put a crib in the room requests.    Umm, sorry, we don't have them.  "BUT I NEED ONE!".  Umm, well it's clearly written we do not have them.

Or they bitch about the deposit.   Yep, it's on the site, on your confirmation page AND your confirmation email.

Clearly states we do not have parking.  We get yelled out for not having valet.

The general public can be very stupid.

Hey real quick can you help me figure out how long to microwave my lunch? It's Lebanese garlic almond rice with chicken, do I use the vegetable setting or the meat? Should I warn people that I heated almonds in the microwave?

Please specify the type of rice. WE ONLY KNOW WHAT YOU TELL US IN YOUR POST. Also, you should bring your own microwave to work. It's not fair to subject others to your allergy ridden lunch.

Well first let me tell you the backstory of how I came to be in possession of the rice. This shouldn't take longer than 8 paragraphs or so. It all started about 7 years ago when a friend first introduced me to Middle Eastern food...
