identity theft sucks

FI just found out he had his identity stolen when he tried to file his taxes and learned someone had already filed under his social security number. Fortunately it looks like his credit is unharmed. But now he has to report to a gazillion agencies and he's super stressed. I feel bad. Anyone else been through this?

Re: identity theft sucks

  • yuck!!  haven't been through it thankfully, but that stinks.  Might be  good idea to look at freezing his credit to be safe

My FI had his identity stolen... on accident. The bank gave his accounts to another person with his same name. Didn't verify the social security numbers or addresses. Luckily, the other person wasn't in a super spending mode and was just buying groceries and fast food before FI caught it on his account (He uses a CC for every purchase. His debit card is only used in ATMs). But it took A LOT for the bank to refund the costs. They were blaming FI and this other guy for the screw up.

    Because that makes sense.

  • I've never had it happen to me, but I saw it happen to a couple people that came in to get their taxes done last year. It was a huge scam and there were reports left and right. I don't know how they went about getting it fixed, but I know my boss helped them through it and gave them steps.
I'll be sending good luck thoughts his way.

  • That's awful, I'm sorry your FI is going through this :(

My FI had his identity stolen - his parents' neighbors stole mail with his personal information and opened several bank accounts in his name on his 18th birthday. He only found out after these people had been kiting checks for weeks and overdrafted thousands of dollars on accounts in his name.

I know it's stressful now, and it may cause some bumps down the road, but it will be okay. Make sure his credit is frozen and any errors corrected, and use the IRS identity protection pin system in the future. It may also be worth investing in identity protection like LifeLock.

  • @blabla89 Thanks for all the useful info. He's already put out alerts on his credit through all three major credit agencies and will be reviewing his history with a fine-tooth comb. At this point all he knows is that his score is unaltered, which is a good sign that no one has done anything really damaging. I didn't know about the IRS identity protection pin or LifeLock - we'll look into these.

This happened to a co-worker. She got a call from the IRS because there were some irregularities with her return. She hasn't filed yet. It turns out that Turbo Tax got hacked and they stole all her information and they filed a bogus return. She put a credit freeze in place, changed accounts and has to sign some affidavits about the identity breach to file her taxes.
  • That sucks! It hasn't happen to me or V yet. But it has happened to my brother three times now. I think he should be more careful, but he hardly listens to me. Oh well

FI has had his identity stolen as well.  It's a long drawn out story and I won't take the time to bore everyone with it, but the craziest thing that happened with it was, the person who stole it, (stupidly) had ordered something online and had it shipped to FI's house.  FI found out about it (he should have been an investigator for real) and after he initially found out about it the shipment was intercepted and rerouted to a different address.  So FI called USPS to figure out where it was going and what the name was on it, and USPS wouldn't give him any info because of privacy laws!!! He was livid.  He was like, so this guy stole my CC info and other stuff, and is making fraudulent purchases, and you can't tell me who it is? ok......

  • That stinks, I'm sorry! I know of a girl who is going through the same thing right now, went to file her taxes and they said she already did. What a mess!

  • Thieves piss me off so bad.  I hope that your FI is able to keep everything straight without too much hassle.

  • This happened to SO.  He got in a really bad accident and was forced to file for disability for a few months.  When he applied, he was told his claim was rejected because he was already collecting benefits from the government.  It turned out someone had been using his SSN and filing taxes among other things.  We have an idea of who might have taken it, but there was no way to prove it, so it was just a hassle contacting all of the credit/government/banks and getting everything untangled.

  • I had this happen with my bank account, but not with taxes (yet - I haven't filed this yet year, so we'll see).

People who steal things suck. Earn your own shit the honest way.

  • Turbo Tax got hacked? I didn't know this! But FI uses Turbo Tax, so maybe this explains it. I use it too so now I'm paranoid - I haven't filed my taxes yet because I expect to owe the IRS money and I was putting it off until closer to April 15. I think I know what I will be doing this weekend... Ugh, I just hope they didn't get me too :(
  • The TurboTax hack got me too. There's some whole long winded process to still be able to file your taxes. I need to file by mail and sign some identity theft paperwork. Then it can take up to a year for them to investigate and actually process the refund.

Ugh. Yeah, the IRS person didn't give my FI a timeline but said that he would "have to be patient", but that the "good news" was that they would add interest to the amount of the refund...

So much for our plans to put his tax refund toward our honeymoon :(
  • And this is why it's good to owe money....
