I need your genius/creative knottie ideas please!

I'm just a little stressed right now. I talked to our caterer last night and they would like us to have table numbers. We're doing "harvest style" seating (see photos) where there's going to be 5 rows of tables, with 6 tables put together to make each row. We were going to "name" the rows after places we've traveled to, but we're doing family style dining. So the caterer said it makes it much easier to know who to serve and where to put the food if each table in the row is numbered.

Not a big deal, but we have a million other things to do. So I've been searching Etsy all morning for ideas. The stuff I like is stupid expensive (we have pretty much $0 in our budget for this! But we could spend under $50 maybe) but I'm wondering if it would be possible to make something (that's not too time-consuming cuz I have a bunch of other stuff to finish making). Or if there's a better resource to buy these things. We need 1-30, and the style would be simple and pretty much anything but "rustic."

You ladies always give me way better ideas than what I find searching online. Any advice would be much appreciated!

And just for fun, I'm going to post the ones on Etsy that I like and can't afford:

  • Could you get some wooden numbers at Michael's or Wal-Mart and paint them yourself?  Or order online from a craft store?  I bet you could get some gold spray paint and wooden numbers way cheaper than ordering them on Etsy.  I love all your ideas by the way, super cute.  I think it will look great.

That's kind of what I was thinking... We might be able to make something similar to the 2nd picture... I'm just worried about them not tipping over lol. And thank you!

  • are you already having centerpieces?  My mom made our table numbers and bought plain white gift tags at Michael's or something, then used a gold sharpie to write the numbers (she has great penmanship, but you could trace or use stickers or something, or print right on them).  Then we punched a hole in each one and tied it onto the actual centerpiece with gold ribbon.  It was super cheap and took about 2 hours total to do, and wasn't something big that was cluttering the table (I hate clutter on the table).

That's the thing, is since we're doing family style dining we can't really do centerpieces. We're having some smaller vases and bud vases at the end of each table to mark where the cut-off is, so the servers can easily tell where each individual table in the row starts and ends, if that makes sense. But they vases/arrangements are small enough that I don't think putting numbers on them would really show :S

DH and I went to a wedding that had this type of seating. They had tables numbered, but it was really hard to tell where one table ended and the other began because they had the tables covered in linens. So people ended up accidentally sitting at the wrong tables, people didn't have chairs, and entire rows (like 20 people at a time) had to get up and move to accommodate people who got squished out of their table. By that time people had already drank from water glasses and used their napkins..... Luckily they had about 4 wedding planners trying to work it out so at least the B&G weren't messing with it, but it was a total mess and really disruptive.

If you can, try to find a way to indicate where table 1 ends and table 2 begins, if that makes sense.

Since you're on a tight budget, I'd get something like this (CLICKY) to stick in your floral arrangements (presumably, they'll be at the center of each table). Then just buy some cheap 4x6 cardstock from wherever and print table numbers on each side. It's not ideal but most table number holders are pretty pricey...

  • I also was going to suggest painting your own wooden numbers and either putting them on a dowel rod or a little circle wooden base.

If you want to go super simple, could just do something like this with a pretty cardstock with the numbers printed.  I've seen free printables around on various blogs etc for the actual numbers.

  • Seems bizarre to me that they need each table numbered for family style. Just put the chicken on each table...what's the problem? lol

Anyways, I made my own and I thought they came out adorable. I took cardstock and covered it in decorative scrapbook paper ($8 at Marshalls). I cut strips about 5 inches wide and 15 inches long. Folded it in thirds so that it made a triangle. Easy to stand. The scrapbook paper was a green and gold design. I took plain green paper that matched but was much easier to read without a design, and I fancy wrote the table number and attached it to each side of the triangle.

I wish I had a picture since this may not be making sense to you haha. Kind of like this but the triangle had a bottom, and obviously much largerimage

  • I found these on Amazon and they suggested some table numbers with them too, but you could use anything that is on the thin side.

  • I can cut some from my cricut for you with gold card stock, then you'll just need double sided tape and dowels.

Ooh! That might be awesome! How would I get the dowels to stand up? Maybe FI could make little platforms for them...

Either a block of wood with a hole drilled in it, or floral foam in a small container, or stick them right into your floral arrangements.

  • I have these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001V6QI5I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

$8.19 and prime eligible. Glue 'em to a stick and put them in some kind of little plant or flower arrangement.
