After Reception Drinks for 10

Hi,

I really need some recommendations for somewhere to go after our reception for drinks - just a nice bar. We will be at the MGM Grand for the reception so somewhere not too far or worth the travel!

I've tried emailing the MGM Grand for help with this but they apparently don't have anywhere where we can reserve a space on a Wednesday evening for 10 people. I'm happy to pay to reserve a space but would prefer not to do bottle service because I'm not sure how this will work if we all want different types of drink (wine, cocktail, brandy, vodka, whiskey drinkers) - if I'm paying I'd prefer to pay for what I want to drink.

I tried emailing Mix twice but I've had no response. They don't seem interested - I'm not sure whether I'm trying to book too far in advance? I'm looking for mid-September, which might seem crazy in advance but I want everything agreed now before something happens and prices rocket or the option becomes unavailable due to high demand. I don't feel like I'm asking too much to pay for a space for 10 people on a Wednesday evening in Mid-September.
I could potentially just not book anywhere but I don't want to be wandering around trying to find somewhere suitable on the night.

I'm UK based so prefer emails rather than calls.

If anyone could let me have any options they managed to negotiate or any ideas? Should I try again in a few months?

Re: After Reception Drinks for 10

  • I think Mix would be great but finding the right person to talk to can be challenging.  I doubt you'd need bottle service, it's not typically that busy on Wednesdays, but they may try to make you book it that way, so it may be a better just show up kind of thing.

Try Mandalay group dining to see if that gets you to someone more interested in helping out; the turnover at restaurants is high so chances are anyone at the restaurant hasn't been there longer than a few months.

  • With 10 people on a Wednesday you should be able to just go most places.  We went to Chandelier on a Saturday night and managed to find two tables together just fine (no bottle service, just ordering drinks) since most people out that late were waiting in line for Marquee nightclub.

I'd also contact Mandarin Oriental, their bar is great (we hit it for H's 30th with about 10 people) with a nice view.  It's not a casino so seemed to be less crowded than other places we went (being fair it was also earlier- our first stop on a party bus- I think we arrived between 9-10 on a Saturday).
  • Thank you for the response Vegasgroom - I'll try not to take it personally that they don't want to take my money. I don't generally have much patience for people making me work hard to pay them for something, but Mix looks spectacular and exactly what I want.

Thank you annathy03 - the Mandarin Oriental looks beautiful too - I will definitely give them a try as well!

  • It's a pretty awesome view from Mix Lounge at night.

  • @annathy03 How late were you out? My FI and I would also like to have after-reception drinks at Chandelier on a Saturday night and are worried about having to wait in line. I'm not sure how many people we will have...possibly more than 10...probably more like 20.
  • @americankorean, our reception at LVCC ended at 11, so by the time we loaded up the shuttle and got there it was almost midnight.  We hit them after the RD as well on the first floor (also grabbed two tables left of the live music stage) but that was earlier, in the 9-10 range which isn't crowded yet.

After the wedding we were in a larger table/couch nook in the chandelier area that's just "outside" the physical chandelier itself on the level with holsteins but still part of the bar and probably had a dozen or so people.  There isn't a "line" at the Chandelier, though it's possible you may have to scope a few areas when you get there and look for who looks ready to leave.  If it does end up being too crowded there I'd check out Vesper which is near check-in at Cosmo and is a mixology bar, they always seem to be busy at the bar itself but the table/couch areas never seem crowded and they don't scrunch the seating together as much so there is more mingle space.
  • Our reception at Wicked Spoon will end at 9, so we should arrive at Chandelier soon after. It sounds like we might be able to hit it before the rush. If not, we will definitely go to Vesper instead. Thanks so much for all the useful info!!!!
  • Finally managed to get a response from someone at Mandalay Bay and they said Mix isn't available for my date due to renovations :-(
I really had my heart set on it after seeing the views.

    On to the Mandarin Oriental.
  • The Mandarin Oriental got back to me straight away and reserved a space with no cost or contract or anything.

I just hope I'm making the right decision in going there because its a bit further away from MGM Grand/Tropicana/Luxor (where everyone is staying) than Mandalay Bay. Not sure if I'm dragging everyone away from their hotel late in the evening for a worthwhile experience or not.
  • I think you're probably working hard on something that isn't entirely necessary. You're hosting a reception for your guests - you don't "need" to continue hosting in to the evening. It's Vegas... people will find something to do if they want to. Plus, MGM has plenty of drink spots on property if someone still wants to stay out.

How late does your reception get done? If it's on the later side of the evening, I personally wouldn't want to leave the property just to go to a bar at another property. Especially one that isn't especially nearby...

  • Thanks for your thoughts @tcnoble - I will think about it.

I don't feel like I need to continue hosting - I just definitely want to go out for cocktails after the meal, it is just how I imagine the day happening. For me the day wouldn't be complete without drinks after the formal sit down meal.

Although the MGM has loads of bars - none of them will guarantee me a table. I have had nights in Vegas where I seem to spend ages wandering around trying to find somewhere nice to drink that isn't full or not my style (not sure whether its just the hotels I stay at?). I do not want to be wandering around in my wedding dress (and shoes) with guests in tow trying to find somewhere.

I will think about it though. You are confirming my concern about making everyone go somewhere further away from their hotels in most cases.

Definitely understand the concern about not having a table guaranteed.. but with only about 10 people I wouldn't think you'd have a HUGE problem.. as opposed to a group of 30 or more. If you're anything like me, having solid plans and reservations makes you feel a lot better but in this case it could work out to just wing it at one of the MGM bars.

  • Nope! No minimum, no deposit! They have just reserved me a table. They can't guarantee a window table, but they have written in the notes that its my wedding day and I'd like a window table :-)

They were really easy to deal with compared with every where else. I've got an email confirmation which makes me feel reassured.
  • thanks, we are still considering where to go after reception so this info is useful!

Knottie83318556 - can I ask who you contacted at the Mandarin Bar please? I've sent a couple of emails and haven't had a response. We're looking for somewhere to book from 10pm on a Tuesday night for 30 people and this sounds ideal. Thank you!
