More makeup questions!

What drug-store brand concealers work well on acne?

Specifically, I have a very large, raised, red bump right in the middle of my forehead. It looks like I'm trying to grow a unicorn horn. :( I very seldom get acne, and when I do it's usually one or two small white heads that I pop (I know, I'm terrible) and by the next day my skin looks good as new. But yesterday I woke up with a raised bump on my forehead about the size of a quarter. It's really tender and red. I hoped it would go away by today, but no luck.

DF's mom's retirement party is tonight, so I'd REALLY like to get something to at least take some of the redness and shininess out of it. Any suggestions? There's a Target and a Walgreens within walking distance of my office.

Re: More makeup questions!

  • I don't know about specific brands, but I have a lot of experience trying to cover annoying red acne. First, get the green concealer stick that looks like green lipstick.

It will take the redness away. Then, use a liquid concealer. Tap some on and blend the edges outward.

  • Maybelline's new master conceal is great for covering blemishes.
  • This is my favourite concealer ever: http://www.allurabeauty.com/2012/review-swatches-lise-watier-portfolio-professional-corrector-concealer-wheel/

I got it at shoppers drug mart in canada, but it was from their 'high end' section, not sure if that counts as drug store brand lol. Anyways, its so awesome, you can mix and match colours for your skin tone/issue, if you happen to get a tan you can still use it and not look ghostly. Its thick, so you just need a tiny bit and lasts forever. I'm very pale and any blemishes I get are of course BRIGHT red, so this is what I use for em.

  • I second @novella1186's recommendation. That's the easiest approach. Just make sure to balance out the rest of your makeup. There's a woman in my office who puts tons of makeup over zits but leaves the rest of her face fairly bare. It makes the acne stand out even more.

Also, a bit of powder helps keep it all from budging. You may need to reapply it a bit more than usual- I find that when I break out, my skin's oilier than usual.

  • I use either this:

    or this:

then put powder over top and if I have it, a misting spray. I think it makes everything set nice and smooth.

I HATE those kind of pimples and I get them once every month...mmmhmmm. Super painful.

Combining either of those with the green tone would probably work too!! Just do not mess with it too much, or you will irritate it and make it more red.

Also, this is kind of weird, but it has helped take redness out for me - you can crush an Ibuprofen tablet and mix it with a small amount of water to make a paste, then put it over your spot until it dries. Wipe off with warm water, but don't rub. It decreases swelling. But only do this if you are (obviously) not allergic to anything in Ibuprofen (have taken it before and had no bad side effects), etc.

  • I use almay's tinted spot treatment. I like it

  • Ground up aspirin works too. It has Salicylic acid in it, which is the active ingredient in most acne medications. As for actual concealers, Elf has a concealer in a tube that I really like.
  • I use Revlon Colourstay too.  Rarely can I not get something covered up with it.

  • I use the green liquid concealer from NYX.  I'm not sure if this is what you're describing, but it sounds like cystic acne.  Is it super deep under the skin?

It is, I'm almost positive it's cystic acne. I don't get it often, but when I do it's very sore/painful and very deep under the skin. The bumps are very large, anywhere from a time to a silver dollar, and I can't see and white head/pus, so trying to pop it is completely futile.

I got a maybelline green concealer stick and the maybelline master concealer. It wasn't perfect, but it got the job done! Thanks for the tips everyone! :)

  • I use DDF (Doctor's Dermatological Formula), which I think you can get at some drug stores and Sephora.  However, if the inflammation is bad, I sometimes put an ice cube on it (I know, it sounds weird) and then rub some OTC Cortizone cream into it.  The Cortizone can actually take down some of the inflammation and redness.  Good luck, that is no fun. :(

=(  Are you able to go to the dermatologist?  Mine gave me a special creme just for spot treatment of the cystic acne I get. Cystic acne is the worst. It hurts so badly and then there's nothing you can do.  Messing with it just makes it a hundred times worse.

That is the worst. I have had it for years and it sucks.

I want to preface this next comment with the fact that I am not one of their sales people, and I absolutely hate when my Facebook feed gets clogged with people selling crap, but I started using Rodan & Fields products about a month ago. Of all the prescriptions my derm gave me and all the other face washes I have used, R&F is far and away the best.

  • @levioosa and @sarahufl, thank you for the tips! I haven't been to a dermatologist yet. I might talk to my regular doctor about recommending one next time I'm there.

sarahufl - which products do you use? The "Unblemish"? I'll definitely look into those.

I use the Unblemish. So far, it has cleared my acne without bleaching my clothes/towels/pillow cases as other clensers have.
