XP: Tipping vendors ??

I also posted this on my local board (to be more specific to my local area, Northern NJ), but thought there might be good insight also on an international board.

So, I know that tipping is a very personal thing and at the end of the day you give what you feel is deserved. But I am interested in what is the average tip that goes (at least as a minimum) to each of the following vendors and, out of the following list, who requires a tip?

Here are the vendors who we have hired/will be part of the day:
1. 2 Photographers (1 owns the company the other is an assistant).
2. 1 Videographer
3. Florist (owns company)
4. 7-Piece Live band (hired through an agent - 1 piece of the band will be playing also at the ceremony and during the cocktail hour)
5. 2 Maitre'd one for the bride and one for the groom, included in our contract with the venue.
6. Officiant - family friend

I don't think I am missing anyone. So, what would be considered the "average" tip for each of this vendors and which of the list requires a tip? I am just trying to have a gauge on how much cash to plan on having available day of.

  • I can't really tell you an "average" tip, but I can tell you what I'm doing/what I would do if I were you.

    1. No tip
    2. No tip if the videographer owns the company/is freelance
    3. No tip
    4. We have a DJ not a band, hired from a mid-sized company (8 DJs I think) that we plan to tip around $100
    5. We also don't have these, but I'd probably tip $50-100 or so
    6. Same for us, we're just giving him a nice gift (probably a bottle of nice liquor and a restaurant gift card for $50-100)

  • I've been looking for the answer to most of these also. However for #5 check and make sure the tip isn't already included with what you're paying for the venue since it's the venue requiring it. Our venue requires this as well but the tip is included in our venue fee.

  • Thanks for sharing! I am mostly unsure of what to do with the band, since there are 7 different people. I know that I will be tipping all but I am not sure what is typically expected.

The band members are likely making $100-$200 for the night. Most recommendations I've seen for tips are $25-$50, which would be roughly 25%. Don't hand them out individually; let the bandleader distribute them. You can give the bandleader individual envelopes or a single lump sum, as long as you make sure he or she knows it's to be distributed.
