starting medication before the wedding?

Hello new here, and just looking for advice. I have tourettes syndrome, and recently developed a new tic where I basically sound like woody wood pecker. I'm terrified of doing it durning my wedding ceremony so I'm thinking about going on medication, but not sure if its a good idea because of how bad the side effects can be, and its not guaranteed to work. Just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation and if there are any ways to counteract side effects? (One medication you sleep all the time and when your awake your still exhausted, the other makes you gain weight because you never feel full and like you haven't eaten for days) Thanks!

What is your Dr's opinion on the timeline and possible side effects? That's who I would ask
  • I already have, they said the side effects could happen right away or be months or years before I experience any.
  • How far out is your wedding, and how long does it take for the medication to take effect? If your doctor approves, maybe you just need to try and see if one of them works out for you?

Unfortunately you may not find very specific advice on this board, but I'm sure there are lots of internet communities of people who have tourettes and can share their experiences and advice. Good luck!

  • Isn't it usually some sort of anti-anxiety med? While it's possible to have sudden side effects, it's not likely. They usually don't have a dramatic effect. Assuming your wedding is over a couple of months away, I'd probably go for it.

Buuut I'm not a medical professional and I also don't have Tourrette's so my opinion is really not worth a whole lot.

Is anyone coming to your ceremony that doesn't know about your tic? Honestly, they will know it as a part of you, especially your fiance. I would wait until later to begin medication. You never know what your reaction will be, physical or emotional. I would rather have the tic than who knows the fuck what! If you do whatever your tic is during your vows I really doubt anyone would care, and if they do they really don't need an invite.

But after if you are interested in pursuing some treatment you should totally do that!

That's my advice. I'm really familiar with psych meds and there is always some sort of reaction. It takes a very, very long time to figure out the correct med and dosage for your needs. It's all trial and error, unfortunately. Nobody can ever really predict what is going to happen. When you see people who need some sort of psych medication, you will notice that they have a lot of changes throughout their lives.

    Good luck!

I have tourettes as well. I don't have verbal tics, just motor tics. I know with me, my stress level exacerbates the tics. I just tried to keep myself as calm, joyful and stress free on my wedding day and for the most part it was great. Unless your wedding is still a few months off, I wouldn't start this medication.
