Give me your appetizer ideas!

edited March 2015 in Chit Chat
Tomorrow FI and I will be heading to his parents house for a Sunday get together. His mother is preparing, as she put it, "a feast of salads," and his sister will be bringing a cream cheese appetizer. I'd like to bring an appetizer too, but I'm not sure what to make. It's a two hour drive from us, and my go-to app is buffalo chicken dip, but since we live so far I have to cook it there so it's not gross and cold, and that takes awhile. Plus, I'd like to make something new. So lay it on me! What are your favorite party apps that would be easy to transport?

  • I make this whenever I have to drive a ways for a party, it's good at room temp: http://www.kalynskitchen.com/2006/09/sun-dried-tomato-pesto-or-spread-festa.html

I serve it with pita chips and crudite.

We had a work potluck on Tuesday and a guy brought crostini with a slice of brie, fig jam, and prosciutto on top.  It was super tasty and seemed pretty easy to put together (could even assemble after arrival), I'll probably do that for my next party.

  • I like to make mini quiches - can be served warm or room temp, and easy to transport since you can just pile them into tupperware containers.

Also, baked egg rolls (I make asian ones and also southwest-inspired ones). A quick reheat in the over upon arrival warms them up and keeps them crispy, and you can again just put them in tupperware for transport.

  • SAUSAGE BALLS!

    YAS GURL YAS.

I eat them hot off the pan (not advised - taste is fine but you get mouth burns and those are not fine), room temp, or refrigerator-cold. They travel fantastically. You can make a big batch and freeze them cooked or uncooked and have instant sausage balls. They can be as fancy or as unfancy as you want.

Essentially sausage balls are the perfect food.

Dammit now I want sausage balls.

Sorry, but I love buffalo chicken dip, and there's no such thing as "gross, cold" dip...I freely admit I've eaten cold dip on celery sticks, and it was delicious.

Do you have a crock pot? with an insulated bag? I've made crock pot dip, shoved it in the bag, taken it a 2 hour drive away, and it's still warm. I just plug it in for reheating purposes. Granted, that was in the winter, and now that it's hitting the mid-upper 80s in FL on a daily basis, no way in hell will I do that without the ac going full blast bc, you know, food poisoning...

Additionally, get some various flavors of tortilla chips and a variety of salsas and some queso. Warm up the queso on arrival. Boom, you just made the variety pack of south west chips and dip for all to try different combos of.
  • Dates stuffed with goat cheese or bleu cheese and wrapped in prosciutto.  Easy and delicious.

    Well now I'm just curious.

  • I usually make a caprese salad. It's small tomatoes (preferably colorful heirloom ones, but grape or cherry tomatoes work too) halved.  Mix in olive oil, a ton of basil, and some really good mozzarella pearls.  Simple and it kicks ass and it keeps pretty well too.

  • Those sausage balls sound pretty tempting...I found a recipe that recommends a dip of mayo and mustard. Are there any other good dips for them?

Look up "Mississippi comeback sauce." A lot of ingredients, but the batch stays good for as long as ketchup and mayo do, which is forever, so you can just keep it on hand and put that shit on everything. Ketchup, mayo, chili sauce, Worcestershire, hot sauce, garlic, pepper, lemon, I think. Maybe mustard too.

They take quite nicely to just about anything you choose to dip them in. Or sauce them in. I want to try them with Fi's homemade bourbon BBQ sauce. Like I said before, they are the perfect food.

I know you already went but my go tos include:

    Beer dip with pretzels
    Swiss cheese dip with veggies
    Swedish meatballs
    Mini quiches
    Jalapeno dip with toasted bread
Cheese and cracker tray (I like to get fancy with this)
