Twitter threats

So, I'm like, 100% freaked out.

So, I've had a Twitter account since hmmm, 2009 I think. I'm not like, super active on it, and I only have about 200 followers, but last night I got really freaked out over something that someone said to me.

Sunday afternoon I tweeted "Elle Woods is my feminist hero", and last night I had a notification that someone had responded. It went a little something like this: "You will be raped you disgusting pig. I will wrap a f***ing bag over your face first you ugly little c**t."

I was super freaked out because I have NEVER been personally attacked like that over the internet. I took a look at their account and they had zero information, but I did notice that whoever it was targeted some other women I know who had tweeted about feminism. Threats that were made to my friends included:

"I will f***ing humiliate and degrade you. I'll make you f***ing pose while I take pictures. Die you f***ing slug."

"You look like the kind of c**t who has been raped. C**ts like you have that face. One that deserves to be f***ing plugged."

I also noticed that the person also directly used our names in some of the tweets, not just our user names. They also mentioned something along the lines of "I can find out where you live". Unfortunately, I didn't get a screen-cap of that before their account was suspended.

Myself and lots of others have reported the user & their account has been suspended, but that's not stopping them from just going and making another account to use to threaten and verbally abuse women. I know it's just some random asshole behind a computer screen, but the thing that struck me the most was that the person said they could find out where we lived. I've considered stopping by my local police department on my way home from work today, but I'm not sure if I have any legal grounds to do anything other than ask them to do a couple drive by's through my neighborhood (I live in a really small city).

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I know right now it's just internet harassment, but it's still pretty creepy.

Re: Twitter threats

  • That's fucked up. The fact that someone can sit there and spout that vile hateful bullshit for their own entertainment is so fucking sick and awful. And I know this is wrong, but it makes me wish really terrible things happen to them.

I'm sorry that happened to you. In all likelihood it's just a dumb fucking internet troll who used empty threats to freak you out, but I 100% understand why you'd be freaked out.

  • Has not happened to me, but that is completely vile. I'm so sorry. I would be freaked out, too. I'd say if it makes you feel better to stop by the police station, then it's worth it to do it.

Then happy I, that love and am beloved

  • That is fucked up.

Just another reason I don't have twitter.

  • I am so sorry. Some people are just terrible people. Did you tweet anything back? I would have been tempted said something about coming at me and you will end up Bobbit style (any remember Lorena Bobbit?) But I am also a terrible person and could never take the high road.

  • Yikes.

I was going to say you should definitely file a report, but a screen cap would definitely be helpful. Apparently everything stays on the internet though so you should be able to find an image somewhere. Maybe someone more techy can help. Another option would be to contact Twitter and say you want to file a report with local police. They may be able to help.

  • Wow that is really fucked up and scary. It can't hurt to stop by the police station and explain that this creep used your real name, said he can find out where you live, and threatened physical harm. Ask to file a report and see if they can step up their presence in your neighborhood.

  • Isn't Ashley Judd currently reporting Twitter harassers to the police? I'd do that. That's too scary.

I'd also change your Twitter username to something that doesn't give away your name or any other info. It's so public, the entire platform just freaks me out.

It seems like internet threats have really stepped up between Gamergate and Curt Schilling calling out his daughter's harassers.

Google cache?  I'm not very tech savvy, but I've seen other more proficient knotties find screenshots from when a thread went rogue and then was banned/shut down.

ETA: That is scary and I'm sorry this happened to you.  WTF.

Yeah, I think I saw an article about that. I need to read it. I'm thinking I'm gonna go ahead and stop by my police department after work, even though I figure they can't do much with the information at hand.

And I'm honestly considering deleting my entire Twitter account. Totally not worth the harassment.

  • Screen cap everything, keep reporting stuff to twitter. Can't hurt to tell the police,  but I wouldn't expect much from them. They in general are pretty powerless to internet threats/don't have the resources to take it seriously.

Do you have any tech savy friends? Being able to find out peoples information goes two ways.

Yeah, I'd go see if I could find the cached version.

This website has a pretty good explanation of how to find a cached version of a page. Or you can PM me his username and I'll try to find the cache if you'd like.

I'd be going to the cops just for peace of mind. If he knew your real names and said he could find where you live, I'd want to know they were driving through more often. I know for a fact that you can put a request for more drivethroughs - we have the sheriff's office here checking on our old property twice a day since there may still be something valuable in the rubble.

ETA also this. I would be happy to try and help - I've never tried to go from Twitter to Facebook, but once I get to Facebook, even if they're private, I've been able to find addresses and phone numbers and wedding dates and all sorts of stuff. (NOTE: I don't do this regularly! I was helping Boosman Lawyer and please don't kick me out for being a stalker.)

Also, I am truly sorry this has happened to you. Scum will be scum, but do whatever it takes to make yourself feel safer in your home.

But rape culture and sexism aren't real things. That's just made up shit from the feminist movement to keep men down.
I'm sorry this happened to you. It's fucking shitty as fucking hell.

Right!? This situation is a prime example of why I'm a feminist asshole. It's fricking terrifying being a woman sometimes.

    Here you go:

I kind of love how outspoken she has been about this. Whether it's on the internet or IRL or whatever the fuck platform you use, there needs to be consequences for this shit.

  • First off I'm sorry this is happening to you. It's messed up and terrifying. I had a similar experience with a person on social media who made threats of rape, claimed I was involved in illegal activities (and would send the information to my friends, and would threaten to send it to future employers as well), and harassed me. Unfortunately the only way I got the police to take it seriously was after the person threatened to stab and kill me. I don't see how threatening to rape someone is much different as its a direct act of violence.

I also noticed throughout the ordeal that social media refused to cooperate, and that my case progressed slowly until the direct threat to kill me with was made. Prior to the death threat, the profiles were reported then closed, but they wouldnt tag the IP address and another account would pop up in its place a few hours later.

I would recruit a techie friend to retrieve the previous responses from the person and bring it to the police's attention. It's now a matter of public safety as this person has threatened you and several of your friends and implied that they knew where you lived and would find you. It's fucked up and no one should have to go through this.
  • Jesus Christ, these fucking pricks with their tiny little spaghetti-thin, orzo-short penises.

I'm sorry that happened to you. It's completely fucked up that he managed to find the one tweet you've put out there with the word "feminist" in it when you don't even tweet that often. But losers tend to have a lot of time on their hands...

I'm sorry. Keep reporting, keep speaking up, and take comfort in the fact that he's probably a 15-year-old 500 miles away who has been reading some fucked up websites, and who is a certain piece of shit, but who will probably never actually harm you physically. :(

"orzo-short" is just brilliant. I love you for that.

  • I would definitely report it. Chances are real good it's a fucking idiot with too much free time, but there is some really scary stuff out there too. It makes me think of a jezebel article I read about a guy that ran a revenge porn site- some people went so far as to hack into women's hard drives for pics they hadn't even posted anywhere, or photoshop their heads onto someone else's body and harass them that way. You can't be too careful- it's all too easy to find out a lot about someone just by their internet connection and presence, even if you think you're pretty private.

  • I'm so sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately the police can't/won't be able to do much to help you, especially without screen shots. You should definitely report it, but I wouldn't expect anything to come of it. If it happens again, keep note of everything, keep reporting it, enlist technical friends to capture IP addresses and any information they can. As PPs have said, this person is probably no where near you and wouldn't actually harm you, but it's disgusting and horrifying regardless. This happens way too often these days, and there are not enough laws protecting people from this kind of harassment.
