Help with wedding venue in Rhode Island

Hello everyone!

I recently got engaged and was looking for some information on venues. I thought posting on theknot was a good start because I always hear great things from my friends who have used it!

To start, any where in Rhode Island or South of Boston for the reception. We're guessing 250 guests give or take. If I could have my dream wedding, I would like some sort of water property to be included, lake or ocean (We'll see though, $$).

Any advice or places that people have heard great things about, would be so helpful. I have no idea where to begin, so I'd love to hear others experiences or word of mouth!

Thanks!!

If you are looking for Water- then I would start with the Newport venues and decide what you like and don't like:

Are you more of a mansion type--or a hotel ballroom? If you can start to narrow down what you like - it will be easier.

One big factor with venues is if you want a place that you coordinate it all yourself- and you have more control-- you pick the place the caterer, the cake etc..or if you are more the type of person that wants the place to do all of it -- the food, the tables,etc...

Once you decide that, again, it will narrow your list.

Think of what you really want and don't want. and then you can narrow it down from there-- I think if you think about it, and decide then the ladies here will be very helpful---there are just so many choices that fit your bill right now!!

Rhode Island is the place to be for water venues. My wedding is in 2012 and I booked it at Quidnessestt Country Club which is sitting on Naragansett Bay. There is also Warwick Country Club (I think they have a capacity of like 200 but you may want to check) The Towers Naragansett, Rhode Island Country Club, Marriott Newport, Lake Pearl, Hope this helps a little. :)

I have to agree with the 2nd post to decide what you are looking for.  If you want the venue to take care of everything and have the budget I would recommend Bel Mer, Castle Hill and Ocean Cliff for thei views are spectacular.  You can get the same view, if not better, at the North Lawn @ Fort Adams, however you need to coordinate the tent, caterer, etc. I had my reception at The North Lawn in August and it was amazing!  You have the Newport Bridge as your backdrop all lit up and then you have the 12 metres sailing by the tent....Good Luck and enjoy this time!

You will be suprised how many venues hold under 200 max unless you want people sitting outside under a tent ( which we didn't want but if you do, it opens you up to so many more places.) We had to cut out so many places because of capacity. I would ask questions like that before you even meet or go anywhere. We saved alot of time that way. We ended up booking at Belle Mer and we are SO EXCITED.

If you are looking into Newport, there aren't too many venues that hold over 200 guests.  I am getting married at the Hyatt in Newport, which was one of the few in Newport that held such a large party (I also have 250 guests) and was within our budget.  I was dead set on getting married in Newport, but if you are open to places outside of Newport, then you may have more options.  The Hyatt is gorgeous!

I used Rhodes on the Pawtuxet for a wedding with 225 people. It is a historic ballrooms with the largest dance floor in the state.   They did a fantastic job and are on the Pawtuxet River.   Our photos were shot along the river in their back yard as well as in the gazebo.

Belle Mer has everything you want and it is literally right on the water.  There is so much outdoor space at Belle Mer which is amazing if you have great weather for your wedding.  We had our wedding in the Island House at BM which would be too small for your guest list but we just loved the indoor/outdoor aspect of BM.

Castle Hill is another option but to me the views were not nearly as nice because after it is dark you will barely even be able to see the water from the reception tent since you are up on a hill and set back from the water.

We did not like Oceancliff mostly because of the style (we like more modern venues) but we also didn't like that there really isn't an outdoor aspect of the reception.  After the ceremony you are pretty much inside.  It does have nice views though.

Good luck in your planning and let me know if you have any questions about Belle Mer.  We had an awesome experience there!
