Sphinx cats

Does anyone have one or know someone with one? My cousin sent me tons of cute pictures of some sphynx kittens and I have decided that I have to have one some day. I was just wondering if there was any special care involved since they are "hairless" (I know they aren't really). I'm getting ahead of myself though. We can't get one right now with our three cats, dog, and puppy we plan on getting in the next few months.

    I'm obsessed, as soon as we buy a house we're getting one. They have terrific personalities and they are so funny and wrinkly. I love them.

    I was actually looking for a local rescue group but there are none anywhere close to us.

    I don't know as much about hairless cats as I do dogs. I do know they need a lot of skin care- sunscreen if they're in the sun, lots of baths and lotion, sometimes they even get zits. But they seem pretty cool. I do know it can be pretty difficult to find a nearby breed rescue for obscure dog breeds, let alone cats, so IDK if that's very realistic.

    Ive been looking around trying to find a rescue for them but most rescues aren't breed specific in my area. There is a sphynx rescue about three hours away from us. That wouldn't be too bad of a travel time. That is about how long we traveled to adopt on of our current cats.

    Have you seen Cornish Rexes? They're almost as cute and they only have the underlayer of fur. They're apparently super soft.

    I was also going to say look at Cornish Rexes! They are so cute.  My sister has always called them Curly Rexes because she thought that was their name when she was little and they kind of have a curly appearance to their barelythere hair. 

    Sphinxs are beautiful creatures but they do require special care.  Because they don't have hair to absorb their oils, their skin can get dirty quickly and so they need to be cleaned more often than other cats.  It depends on your sphinx but its usually a weekly thing.  Their ears also tend to get dirty pretty quickly for some reason.  Cleaning doesn't have to be a full bath though, for a lot of cats, wiping them down with a gentle wipe (like a baby wipe) is enough.  Just be careful and watch for signs of skin irritation.  Sphinxs should be kept as indoor cats.  They can burn in the sun so if they are going to be outside you need to watch them/lotion them.  They also can get colder faster than other cats because they don't have fur coats, so you may want to invest in some ridiculous cat sweaters for them.  

    All that said, they are amazing and worth the extra little hassle.  For some reason, ever sphinx I have known has been a little bit more "dog-like" than other cats.  I think they realize that they need more than other cats so they require a bit more attention and like to play games like fetch, but that could just be quirks of the sphinxies I have known.

    I already have a cat that "sings". Lol. It doesn't bother me but it does get on H's nerves sometimes so that is something to think about.

    My friend's roommate has one.  It's the sweetest cat in the world.  They give him a bath once a week because otherwise he starts to smell like french fries, but he is an amazingly friendly cat.  He hangs out on the stove (not when it's on) because it's warmer there.

    My friend has a sphinx and she loves him. She takes him on walks and rides in the car. He's very social but yes, he does wear sunscreen and she does bathe him regularly. But he doesn't seem to mind. Seems like a really great idea if you don't like the shedding but I don't believe they are hypoallergenic.

    You'd be right. Because there is no fur to catch dander, sphinx are actually worse for allergies. If you believe it's proteins in their spit, same issue. If you're allergic to cats, it's not the hair you're allergic to, it's skin and saliva.
    Usually, but not always. FI is allergic to fur but only some types, essentially - so for him some animals are fine and some aren't depending on their coats. Most non-shedding dogs have the hair type that he doesn't react to at all. It's not a typical animal-related allergy, though, and you're right that most people are allergic to the proteins in the saliva etc., and no animal is truly "hypoallergenic".

    I want a Sphynx not for the less-allergies aspect but just for the non-shedding one, though. My roommate before FI had three cats and I don't think I will ever get over how much cleaning up of cat hair I had to do. I'm way too much of a clean freak to handle living like that again.

    I LOVE THOSE. A friend of mine had one and a Devin Rex. They were the COOLEST cats. Like dogs and super super sweet. If I ever couldn't have a dog, I'd totally have one of these guys.
