Providing transportation?

We're getting married in June in Rockville, MD at a private residence. Because of it's proximity to the city, Uber is available in the area. It's not really in our budget to pay for a shuttle for guest from the hotel 7 miles away. And don't worry, we're not spending our budget on favors or massive centerpieces, just a tent for the outdoor reception, food, and an open bar.

We have an Uber code that will provide guests with a free ride up to $20 if they haven't used it before. There are also taxi services and rental car availability in the area. 98% of guests are coming from out of town. I don't want guests to have to open their wallets for the wedding, should we find a way to make transportation affordable or is it okay to forego it?

If you have a place for people to park for free if they choose, I would not see an issue with not providing transportation. Because if people are coming from out of town, chances are, they're going to need a car anyways. I would put on my wedding website stuff about Uber (with the code) or taxi services or where guests can park at the residence. Also directions or address for GPS.

Transportation to and from the wedding is nice, but not a "must have".

  • Nope, guests are responsible for their own transportation (and wardrobe, lodging, meals outside of event time). Agree you should provide free parking, but besides that you're in the clear.

  • Thanks ladies :) The home is on a wide private cul-de-sac with plenty of available free parking. We plan to send out a flyer to the neighbors a couple weeks in advance letting them know that there will be a wedding and to let us know if they don't want people parking in front of their homes.

The Uber code and info on how to use it will be on the wedding website and I'll get numbers for some reliable taxi services in the area as well.

  • I provided parking as the hotel I was having my reception had a fee, but I didn't provide HOW to get there. That was on the guests.

  • Not necessary. We put cards for a taxi company in the bathroom of our venue. Perhaps you could put the number for Uber and the coupon code if you want to communicate it somehow.

  • It's not against etiquette in any way to NOT provide transportation, and with the hotel just 7 miles from the venue, I don't think it's a big deal at all. Seems like a quick, easy drive or a fairly cheap cab ride. Guests can figure that out.

And from what I've experienced, even when you do provide a shuttle or some kind of transportation, some people just prefer to drive themselves anyway. This is one of those things that you don't need to worry about :)

  • Thanks again! I've officially entered the period of worrying about the details now that the big things are done.
