Being 'nice' vs. being uncomfortable

Dear Prudie,
I work in a busy office at a university, which I love. I’m a social person, and I enjoy being helpful and interacting with lots of different people. But there’s one student who insists on hugging me every time he sees me—this can be multiple times a day. He also calls me sweetie, honey, love, and even baby once. I’ve seen him do this to other women. He’s a genuinely polite and nice person, but all this “affection” makes me really uncomfortable. How do I tell him I don’t want him to hug me and I don’t want him to call me sweetie without coming across as a jerk? I have to see him often, so I don’t want to hurt someone I enjoy interacting with otherwise. I’m an outgoing person but not blunt, and I’ve used all the body language I can, but he’s not getting the message.

Especially since this is a student she needs to tell him it's not acceptable to treat people this way.
  • I had a co worker like this and trying to shy away from it never worked. I finally had to tell him it made me uncomfortable and I don't hug at work. He didn't hug me again.

Getting caught flat-footed on the first hug makes sense (I had a student do that to me last week), but after that make a plan "Bob, great to see you *extended hand*, let me get that file. ...oh, Fred, you know that I always call staff by proper names--it just lets us all practice being professional--which is SO important for students.  Ms. Smith has that file, let me get it from her"...

^I have this conversation fairly often.  And I am VERY obnoxious at being completely unable to call profs by their first name in front of students. If there is a student worker on a first name basis with an employee, I still can't do first names.
