Children during marriage! :)

This is a post about babies!  I didn't intend this to be a discussion on artificial BC/NFP or the Church's teaching on openness to children; there will be plenty of opportunity to discuss that on other posts.  I mostly wanted us to share our vision of having our future families.  It's meant to be fun.

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married?

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?

How many children do you want to have?
The last question is in the  form of a clicky poll below.  I only wished the polls were able to offer more choices, but '8 children' was as high as I could get it.

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married? We'll be 27 and 28.
How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?We don't want to try for it or prevent it. FI jokes and says we'll be doing NFP...no family planning. :p  FI is in med school and I'm in grad school.  But we feel we're growing enough in maturity and financially sound enough (even if it's with student loans) to have a baby if it happens.  But if we get some time together alone, we'll welcome that, too.
Fertility experts say a couple that doesn't take knowledge of their cycle and doesn't use any type of birth control have good chances of conceiving within 9-12 months.
What saint names have you picked out?  What about names? I love Maximillian Kolbe, Thomas Beckett, Thomas Aquinas, Gianna Beretta Molla, and of course our Heavenly Mother Mary.  For names, I think we'll name our kids Thomas, Gianna, Marion, Marie, something like that.  I'm not sure about Maximillian, that's just so long, and Max sounds so blah.
Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?Yes, at least their first names.  It just gets complicated whether we'll want Aquinas, Beckett, Lisieux, Assisi, etc. to be their middles names or not?  We're undecided.
Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?Yes, we agree totally.  It was a surprise that we did when we talked about it the month we began dating.  We view children as gifts from God and don't want or think artificial BC is healthy for our marriage.  We are all for the Church's teaching.
How many children do you want to have?I picked 5, but in actuality, we're open.  We can see ourselves having more than 5.

    Love this poll :)

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married?
I will be 23 and he will be 25.

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?
We will either have kids right away or TTA for 2-3 months. If we wait it will only be because of health insurance (which we will assume he'll get in July 2012 when he gets a residency). But we have no other reasons that we consider grave enough to avoid children. He's way in debt from med school, sure, but he will be for another 10 years at least and we're not waiting that long!

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?
Hard one... We haven't discussed this together. I think all of our kids' first and middle names will be saints' names. For girls, I like Mary, Elizabeth, Anna, Katherine... but those are all pretty standard. I also like Gianna and Margaret. I thinki our first girl will be Anna/Anne, its a family name on his side and my middle name is Anne. For boys... not sure. Definitely a Joseph. And I really like Dominic. FI likes Sebastian (his confirmation saint)... eh, not so sure on that one...

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?
    Yep.

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?
We agree completely that the number of children we have is up to God. We are both completely against artificial BC, and very wary of using NFP to avoid too liberally. So, God-willing we'll have a very large family :)  (I'm the one who picked 8+ in the poll lol... but we're open to whatever. I just figure since we're young and healthy there's a chance we'll have that many. FI is one of 9)

    26 & 27

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?
A couple years. We want to enjoy being married to each other and get a firm stand in our jobs before bringing a child into our home. But whatever happens happens.
What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?
Not sure yet, but the names will be of French or Scottish origin.
Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?
Never thought about it. (I'm still so new to being a Catholic)

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?
FI would like 2. I'd like 3. I'm sure once we get started it will be a discussion just based on finances.

We will probably wait about a year to save up some money.  FI is up for a new job in the spring so if he gets it we will start right after.
What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?
We have no saints names picked.  Aurora, Anabell, Lydia, Aubrey, Lucas, Charles.

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?
    No idea.

We agree completely.  Being a mom is my #1 goal and so when I started dating, age 12, I asked every BF I had how many kids they wanted.  FI's answer was 5-7 or more if I can afford them.

FI will be 29 and I will be 26

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?
We aren't going to try right away, but if we're fertile during the honeymoon, we certainly aren't going to wait any longer than we already have!!!  I figure if we are blessed with a honeymoon baby, we've got a 9 month buffer zone to get used to the idea and prepare.  I have a few friends who have managed it in less ideal circumstances, so I'm sure we'll be fine.  If not, we'll avoid until my fiance is done with school after this fall or next spring semester!

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?
I personally love Mary (Maria/Marianne/etc), Elizabeth, Theresa and Lucy (Lucia) for girls and Anthony, Thomas, Joseph, Andrew, Matthew or James for boys.  I think that's something that my fiance and I will talk more about when we are married!

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?
Maybe... Possibly saints for first name combined with family names as middle names...

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?
Both of us are from families of three kids each... my fiance is more comfortable with that number since that's what he grew up with, but I think that four sounds like a nice even number :)  At the back of my mind, I'm a bit worried about having fertility issues since my mom had so much trouble with us, so I think I need to be ok with whatever God gives me... whether it's only two or much more than 4!

We're waiting at least a couple years if things go as planned.  We want to get used to being married first.

We don't have anything picked out yet.  There are a couple names that are "traditional" in H's family, luckily they're Christian names!

We haven't figured that out yet.

Our stock answer is "However many God blesses us with" -- 0 to Duggar level.  Based on our ages, I'm guessing between 1-5, depending on how well all the pipes work.

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married?

    I was 27 and H was 28.

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?

We will be waiting at least a few years. First of all, we are not living where we would like to be. Secondly, we would like to have a house first and we also need to be in a better position financially. We also just want to enjoy being married for awhile before kids come into the picture.

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?

Well, my H name is Mike, so if we have a boy, we might consider a Jr. Other than that, we really don't have any names picked out. I don't want to get my heart set on something and then change my mind by the time the baby comes

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?

Haven't even thought about that yet.

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?

We will take as many as God gives us. I personally would like to just have 2 or 3. But H wants 4. I am not so sure that will happen.

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married?  me: 26, DH: 25

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?  Probably about 3 years.  We just got married.  I'm just finishing my masters degrees in June and want to establish a career and pay off student loans before having kids.  Also, I love DH, but he's not the most responsible person in the world and can't really picture him with kids right away.  We're also the first of our set of friends and relatives to get married, so I'd like to wait a few years so that we know other people with kids to play with.

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?  Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names? We haven't picked out names yet.  We've discussed some names, but haven't come to any conclusions.  My sister and I are Sara and Rachel; if we have a girl I'd like to name her Rebecca to complete the matriarchs theme, but DH doesn't like that name.

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion? How many children do you want to have?
I say two and DH says three.  We each want the same number of children as were in our families.  I'm sort of open to three, but worry about balancing that many with a career.

    I was 31 (3 months shy of 32) and DH was 34.

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?
we wanted to me married at least a year.  now, we are a month shy of 2 years, and i still am not sure if we'll have one or not.  if we do have kids, it will be just one.  i think that's all i could handle mentally and defintiely all we could handle financially unless i decide to stay home.

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?
if we have a boy, his middle name will be Paul - its tradition in H's family for the oldest son to have his father's first name as his middle name.  since we'll only have one child, if we have a girl, ive considered Paula for the middle name, although i dont really care for it.

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?
i guess im not sure what a saint name is?  is that like a confirmation name?  dont they pick that out?

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?
because we're geezers, we're pretty much agreed on just one, if any.  i personally dont want to give birth after 35 (even though many women today do).

How many children do you want to have?
undecided, but if any, it will be just one.  if i end up having the one and i stay home, i might consider a second.  but i dont think i could have more than one and work.

100% thomas for a middle name for a boy that's my FI middle name and his dad's first name.  100% Marie for a girls middle name, its my middle name and my mom's middle name, I kinda like the tradition thing.

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married?

We will both be 26 when we marry, with him turning 27 the following month.

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?

We want to start trying as soon as we are married in December 2011.  We have been together for 8 years and feel we've had our honeymoon years, so we are just ready to have a baby.  I have severe baby fever but I think his is worse!

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?

We haven't discussed any names yet.  His grandpa passed away almost two years ago and we might use Walter as a first or middle name but we aren't sure yet.  My middle name is Louise and even though I am not in love with it, I might give it to my child as a middle name because Crystal just doesn't fit as a middle name very well.  Other than that, we haven't discussed it.  We'll have 9 wonderful months to talk about that!

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?

We haven't discussed this yet either.

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?

I'm from a very large family of 4 girls and 1 boy, which is something I don't really care to repeat.  I love my siblings but my parents were both working parents and didn't have the time to focus on us individually as much as we would have liked.  My fiance is from a family of 2 boys and 1 girl,  which worked well for them.

He always says he wants to have a basketball team and I only want 2.  I might change my mind when the time comes but I worked hard in school and want to be able to work but still have a lot of time for my children.  I want to work but not feel like just a working mom, I want to be more hands-on than my parents were able to be.

How many children do you want to have?  Probably around 2+.  We are still undecided about this but will take whatever we get.  I'm not sure we are going to do any sort of prevention after marriage.  Whatever happens will happen.

    We were both 28.

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?
I got pregnant a little over a year after the wedding. At the time of the wedding, kids weren't on our mind at all. But after a year of having fun, we decided to "see what happens" and if it happened, then we were ready. And here we are.

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?
Have not thought about saint names. (Not completely sure what it is though I do remember when I was little, my mom telling us that my saint name was Mary and my brother's was Jude. Was this a baptism thing?) Still not certain on names but at this point we like Zoe Catherine for a girl and either Thomas or Jeremy for a boy, middle name undecided.

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?

    No

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?

We agree on at least 2. I want more but we'll see what life deals us.

How many children do you want to have?
2-4... I'd like my kids to have more than one sibling but practically, we're aware that expenses may be prohibitive after 2.

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?Ideally we would like to wait a year, but if God wants to give us a baby sooner, than that's great too! We want to wait because I plan on being a stay-at-home mom, and it'd be nice for FI to be more established in his career, and for myself to have some money saved up for us to fall back on.
What saint names have you picked out?  What about names? We're hoping for a boy and a girl, Manuel and Lucia. Manuel is a family name, and was the name of FI's father, who passed away, and Lucia can be a portuguese or swedish name, which are both of our heritages (and also one of the children that witnessed the miracle at Fatima). Lucia's middle name will be Grace. Other than that we haven't really discussed saint names as of yet.
Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?Probably not.
Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion? We're pretty much in agreement... if we have two of the same gender, I would really like to try for a third, but we figure we'll get there when we get there.

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married?

We'll both be 29, though I will turn 30 about 2 months later.

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?

We'll probably tta for a few months because of FI's school schedule. When we stop avoiding, I don't know how well I'll do at "letting things happen" because I've learned so much about fertility/family planning. I've got major, major baby fever, though, so I would welcome a little one soon after marriage.

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?

Our babies' saint names will also be their first names. We've agreed on Clare Louise for a first girl. Beyond that, things will be up for debate. I love Thomas, Lucas, Edward and Peter.

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?

    Yes, see above.

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?

We have been discussing this forever. My fi would love a very large family. I would like a more middle-sized family. I voted 4, because that is our "answer." Our real answer is that we'll have/adopt (depending on what God provides) at least 2 (we're both anti-only children). After 2, we'll take it one at a time, factoring in health, finances, how well we're handling parenting emotionally, etc. Based on my age and my sincere belief in the benefits of spacing children, I doubt we'll have more than 4 or so before age/health becomes a factor.

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?
We're going to be waiting a while, probably 4-5 years. I will be in my first year of graduate school when we get married so I don't think I could handle being in grad school and having a baby and being a newly wed. We may start trying my last year of grad school.

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?
We don't have any saint names. For a boy FI like Ethan and for a girl I like Maya, Isabella, and Gabriella.

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?
    No

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?
We do not agree. FI is the youngest of 6, so he wants a somewhat large family with 4 kids. I think I could only handle 2. He's been trying to get me to settle on 3, but being the middle child of 3 I don't really like the odd number.

How many children do you want to have?
We'll decide after we have 2, then hopefully he won't want anymore :)

Since the OP hasn't come back yet, I'll clarify what I think she meant by Saint names... I'm pretty sure she just means, will you name your kids after saints, or will that be their middle name, or not at all? (although I think some priests will ask that you give your child a "Christian" name at baptism, but maybe some parents get around it by giving a second middle name? idk...)  A lot of you have saints' names picked out even though they aren't necessarily chosen for that reason. For example--Lucia, Isabella, Gabriella, Charles, Lucas, and Michael are all names PPs suggested that are also saints names. My favorite suggestion above is Zoe Catherine... St. Catherine Laboure is my patron saint and when she was growing up she went by the nickname Zoe (who is a little-known French saint, apparently). I've thought either Zoe Catherine or Catherine Zoe would be a neat name for a daughter for that reason :)

[QUOTE]Since the OP hasn't come back yet, I'll clarify what I think she meant by Saint names... <strong>I'm pretty sure she just means, will you name your kids after saints, or will that be their middle name, or not at all? (although I think some priests will ask that you give your child a "Christian" name at baptism, but maybe some parents get around it by giving a second middle name? idk...)</strong>  A lot of you have saints' names picked out even though they aren't necessarily chosen for that reason.

<div>Yes, that's what I meant.  KatieAnne beat me to it!</div><div>
</div><div>Before the 20th century, it was a popular tradition to name your child after a saint whose feast day is the same as the birthday.  Nowadays, some people just name their children after their favorite saints.  It's also possible to give your child a saint name without using that as his or her first name or middle name.</div><div>
</div><div>In any of these cases, that saint name becomes the child's patron saint.  The hope is that the saint will be an intercessor for them and that the saint will be a role model for holiness in life.</div><div>
</div><div>I was just wondering if anyone was thinking of doing this, too.</div><div>

oh, my kids names will definitely be traditional names, preferably saints names.  im not a fan of "made up names" or hip trendy names.

i was always surprised that my parents gave me two very pagan names (real names, but not saints).  at one time i considered changing my middle name to my confirmation name, but it wasnt worth the expense and hassle.  now that i thikn about it, i could have probably done it for free when we got married!  oh, well.

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married?
I was 26 (by 12 days) and he was 28

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why?
We want to start TTC at the end of this year/beginning of 2012.  Currently, we are living in a very small townhouse.  We're trying to save as much money as possible so that when we do have a child, we can either move or already have moved by the time baby comes.

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?
The only name I know for sure is "Anna Josephine" for our first born daughter if we have one.  Anna Josephine was my great-grandmother's name.  Josephine Ann was my grandmother's name.  My mother's name is Annette Josephine ("Annette" means "little Anne").  And my name is Catherine Ann (Catherine after a Grandmother on my dad's side).  So there is some history to this name and it's important to me to keep the name.  Luckily, my family were devote Catholics growing up in Poland and stuck by the whole naming your children after saint's.

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?
Either their first or middle name (or even both) will be after a saint.

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion?
There was a small amount of discussion.  Like, "How many kids do you think you want?"  H says, "2 to 3."  "Oh, sweet!  That was my answer, too."

I saw that as well, agape. Some friends posted on facebook about it, one supportive, one very critical. I tried in the nicest, most diplomatic way to express my agreement.

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married?
    I was 24. He was 26.

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why? We would love to already have one. But the financing of medical eduation made that impossible before. Now I am having fertility issues that we are trying to sort out.

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names?  Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?
We will name our first daughter Rosalia after my mom, who has fallen asleep in the Lord. I've also always liked Michael.

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion? How many children do you want to have? We've always agreed on two.

How old were/will you and your DH/FI be when you got/get married? FI - 31 Me - 29

How long after the wedding did you wait/do you want to wait until having kids?  Why? We've talked about waiting a year or 2. We're by no means spring chickens, but we would like to have some time to travel and enjoy being married for a while. But both of our siblings have started getting pregnant and that's made us a little excited to have babies of our own - so hwo knows!! Things may change.

What saint names have you picked out?  What about names? I'm not sure what a Saint name is, but whatever names we choose will probably be names from the bible. I would like to name our first daughter Genevieve after my grandmother, but I have a feeling if my siblings have a girl before me that one is going to be taken. Other than that, we haven't talked about it too much, but we both had amazing grandparents, so we'll probably use their names.

Will your kids' saint names be the same as their names?

Do you and your DH/FI agree on the number of kids completely or was there some discussion? approximately. he wants 2 or 3, i want 3 or 4. I think this will work itself out.

How many children do you want to have? 3 or 4
