  The same thing happened to me a while back. My apartment is immaculate but the building is old. There's a crawl space under the building and upon further inspection I discovered several places where it wasn't completely sealed off, and that's how they were getting in.

  DH and I rent a house that was built in the 50's. It is super easy for mice to get in our house. I had been wanting a cat and that is how I convinced DH for us to get one. She is the best mouse trap ever.

  Bleh! I'm sorry that happened. From my sister's balcony at her old apartment in Chicago you could see rats walking in the alley sometimes and those fuckers were seriously the size of my beagle. They were HUGE! Rodents don't normally freak me out but Chicago rats do. 

  
  

  Funny story, though. My sister and I decided to smoke a joint one night and then take her dog for a walk. The streets were totally empty because it was so late. So I'm strolling down the sidewalk, and suddenly I realize something is coming towards me several yards away. I stop walking and realize it's a big huge RAT! Since I was high and maybe not thinking clearly, I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. I was laughing so hard I had to sit down, but I didn't want the rat to get me, so I sat down in the road. Dumbest thing ever.

  I came home from a weekend away and there were signs that a rodent had been in my apartment. I immediately went out and bought mouse traps. The traps were up for all of 4 hours when I heard it snap and then there was a struggle. I caught a motherfucking RAT! My house is clean, no food is left out, dog food is nicely packed in tupperware. WHY AND HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!

  
  

  H and I rent an apartment in the city that was built in 1928, but we keep our house freaking clean. Now I have my landlord bringing rat traps over and filling any possible entry points. He's acting like there could be more! Seriously, I could have handled any other creature, but rats are the fucking worst. 

  
  

  Ugh, sorry, just needed to vent because I am beyond freaked out. I couldn't even sleep last night. I am proud of myself for disposing of that rat, though. There was much panicking and cursing involved, but I did it.

  Sorry to say this, but rats live in large colonies, not by themselves. Chances are there are definitely more close by (but for your sake hopefully not in your apartment)

  I think I heard a mouse this morning when I went in the garage to leave - this thread reminded me to tell FI.  Our house is in an area that has been turning a lot of fields into housing additions and we back up to a field so apparently mice come to visit.  Fortunately they've never been in the house but there's been some in the garage and somehow even in the grill in the backyard.  Creeps me out.  I'd freak out hearing the trap though!

  When they turned the hills above my house into housing, we got rats around our house.  Those fuckers were gigantic.  Like, people joke about rats the size of cats, and I thought it was an urban legend, but it was totally true and disgusting. 
  
  When I was a camp counselor, we had a rat get into our cabin.  I was in charge of eight screaming girls who refused to go to sleep until we caught it.  They were panicked.  Of course, when we did get it caught in a sticky trap they wanted to take it to the nature center to make it better (the sticky trap was not kind).

  My glimmer of hope during this rat situation was that I had an appointment to see another apartment after work today, but the guy just canceled because someone put down a deposit. The search continues...
