Re: buffet or plated dinner

  • For that size group I would see if you could make up a menu of various different options and then do table side ordering.  Of course if that is possible at your venue.

  • I agree with Maggie, some kind of limited menu would be great for a small group.
  • I wish we could do that.  I was actually under the impression, that's what it was going to be. Their policy is any group over 15 people need to pick one of their menu packages.

    STUCK

I had the same problem. Their limit for ordering off the menu was 30. We had 34 total. If it means more options, I like a buffet. H and I had a cocktail style buffet reception with a ton of appetizer style foods and a few more substantial choices. It was way more options than we would have been able to have plated. But it was also more expensive.

Well if that is the case then I would do a buffet.  More choices is always better then trying to pick one that you think everyone will like.

    Is family style possible?

  • Or what about having servers come around with trays of food, kind of like on Downton Abbey.  So it is like a buffet but more intimate for your smaller wedding.  Then you could print up some menu cards so that your guests know what is coming around.

  • Unless it is something like lobster, filet or prime rib, I prefer a buffet. I can select what I want - get extra of the stuff I like and skip the stuff that would otherwise go untouched.

We've got so many people with food allergies and intolerances in our family - buffet...  It's a NIGHTMARE trying to go even to a restaurant as a group for plated...  If no one on your invite list has those issues, then plated...  Plus, I just like the control factor of a buffet as the PP mentioned - I can get a plate of the food I will actually eat instead of the stuff that's there which I won't touch under any circumstance...
  • I prefer buffet. I can get exactly what I want, not what I thought I wanted a month ago.

  • At that size, I'd recommend family-style, silver service, or service à la française.
  • Small wedding then do plated.

  • A buffet for a small group just seems needlessly costly. You'd end up wasting a ton of food (that you'd have to pay for). I'd stick with plated.
