Destination Mexico April 2016

Hello all,

I was recently in engaged in December and am planning a destination wedding April 2016. I have some brochures for several places that the travel agent has sent me. We are pretty set on doing it in Mexico. Ideally, we would like to keep the price below $1500pp for 3/4 nights and all inclusive. I am looking for past experience suggestions. Really all we need is a beautiful resort, all inclusive, no children, good food/drinks, and great reception area.

We have really fell in love with Dreams in Cancun. However, we have been told by some people to try and get to Playa or Riviera Maya instead of Cancun. We have been told to stay away from Cancun. I already confirmed that Spring Break would be the first week of April so it should not affect us, and Easter is the last week on March.

Other ideas: (New to open 2015) Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya, Excellence, Valentin....

Any help from past experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!

Re: Destination Mexico April 2016

  • Funny, I am getting married April 2016 as well. I just toured the Dreams in Cancun, and it's truly remarkable and in your price range if you find a good travel agent. It's super elegant, with what looks to be amazing restaurants, gorgeous rooms, and a spa that I've never seen before in my life. They do two weddings a day (unlike moon palace that does 9 which is crazy and I wouldn't feel comfortable with that). The only downside is that their beach is not clear and blue like the main strip of cancun is. If the beach is not a concern for you, I would highly recommend it. David Carillo was really nice, he's the wedding coordinator. Why have you been warned to stay away from Cancun? I am wondering because we are looking up and down for the perfect resort in Cancun, and can't seem to find it... but we hadn't been warned or anything
  • Oh and by the way I am talking about Dreams Riviera, not Dreams Sandos
  • LeBlanc is really nice, and it's adults only. However, I think it may be out of your price for the time of year you want to do it. It's the only adult-only luxury resort I know in Cancun. We were just there for a week in December and loved it.

"There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness." -Friedrich Nietzsche, "On Reading and Writing"
  • It's not adults-only, but we had our wedding at Beach Palace in Cancun and loved it.  When we were there, I actually didn't see any kiddos as there are definitely other Palace resorts better suited to families.

Obviously we chose Cancun, so I might be partial :), but we deliberately chose Cancun over the Mayan Riviera since we wanted folks to be able to fly right in and get straight to the resort without having to travel for another hour.  Also, we wanted the option for people to easily go off-resort, which you could do somewhere like Playa, but not further south.  So you guys just have to decide what your preferences would be.
  • My fiancé and I are in the planning pause of our Cancun wedding (Nov 2015) and we decided on Secrets The Vine. Not sure about the dates you've chosen, but it falls in your price range with our dates?
I visited the area a few months ago and was also considering Rivera Maya, but after driving down there, I wasn't crazy about the longer car ride from the airport and liked the options "the strip" in Cancun offered if our guests felt like heading down there.
Our wedding coordinator is fantastic and the resort is absolutely AMAZING! I have been fortunate to travel extensively and this resort actually wowed me. The service was impeccable, the views amazing, food and beverage were also far better than other resorts in the area. Oh, and the spa is to die for.
Overall, the resort is a little pricey... But incredible! I literally cannot wait to return!
    Good Luck!
  • I'm getting married Aug. 2015 in the Riviera. We decided on Bel Air Resort. We have previously stayed in the Cancun adult-only resort, and it was great. It's affordable, and right now, they are offering a "Wedding of Your Dreams" package for free with 10 booked all inclusive rooms.
  • Ive stayed at the Valentin before - one of the most beautiful resorts Ive been to, VERY lush greenery, beach is beautiful, they have a beach bar (and one night a week is a beach party which was a lot of fun!). Pool is nice, food is nice, entertainment is good but it is a pretty quiet resort. If you are bringing a large-ish group this wont be much of a problem, really, but it depends on what vibe you are going for! :)
  • Hi! I'm sure you may have already decided on a resort, but I was looking through the discussion boards as I am in the process of planning a DW in either Mexico, Jamaica, or the DR. I personally have stayed at El Dorado Seaside Suites in January of 2014 and it was the best vacation ever. It was my first at an all-inclusive, but my fiance and I went with my parents who are very well-traveled, and they said it was absolutely the best resort they had ever stayed at based on quality of rooms, service, and especially food! They said the beach/water wasn't as great as the DR, but since there is an artificial reef there were no waves which made it great for snorkeling! We talked to two different couples that were getting married there while we were there and they seemed to be extremely happy with their decision.
If we decide on Riviera Maya for our wedding we are debated El Dorado Seaside Suites or their sister resort El Dorado Royale (a little bigger, but also closer to the airport since Seaside Suites is about an hour away from the Cancun Airport).
I know multiple people that have also gone to El Dorado Royale and said it was the best resort they've ever been to.
All of the El Dorado resorts are adults-only with all the premium liquors included. Their house wines weren't that great so my mom and I did splurge on buying a bottle of wine one night which I'm sure was extremely over-priced but we were really craving one so it was worth it! haha!
Good luck with all of your planning! I thought doing a DW would be less stressful, but there's still a lot of decisions to be made!
  • My fiance and I are in the middle of planning our wedding at Dreams Riviera Cancun right now.  Ours will no doubt coincide at least to some extent with spring break since we're planning on the weekend before Easter weekend, but we're actually not too stressed about that - after all, it's a private resort, and I doubt many spring breakers could party as hard as some of our friends can, lol.

We just fell in love with the resort, and have read nothing but fantastic reviews and stories about weddings there.  I'm not worried about it being in Cancun - I actually looked it up on google earth, and while it is on the resort corridor, it doesn't seem to be in Cancun proper, but a little outside of it.  Also, a lot of websites and articles I've been reading are talking about Cancun being a sort of up-and-coming location for destination weddings.

That said, if you're really concerned about rowdy crowds (or anything else) being too near Cancun, have you considered Dreams Tulum?  That's where we were originally looking - it's just as beautiful, has the same great reputation and pricing, and their wedding packages are the same.  What really dissuaded us was that it was about an hour and a half away from the airport, and we really wanted our guests to be able to immediately settle in and hit the beach.  But if you don't mind a bit of a drive, it's actually super isolated - I think it's several kilometers away from the nearest resort.  Also, there are some incredible ruins at Tulum, if you or your guests are interested in that kind of thing.

Best of luck in your planning!
