Re: Gone

  • I've only got help for a few of these...

    1. Is a blending sponge really worth it?

I don't have one but everyone I know raves about these things and claims they are the best thing ever, so I think this would be way worth it.

    2. Best subtle highlighter for cheeks, under $30 if possible

I use one by Too Faced that I adore. Recommended.

    3. I'm getting Duo dark lash adhesive, and I want a (cheap, because false lashes are such a one-day thing) semi-natural lash. I'm loving the look of these Andrea strip ones on ulta's website.

I usually get the Sephora brand ones do I might not be helpful here - I like the "Celebrity" ones.

    8. A non-liquid waterproof eyeliner. I'm leaning towards stilla, either the stingray or damsel. I'd love to hear from people who own them, or if I can do even better.

I love Stila liner but I think Urban Decay is maybe even a bit better for staying power. I buy and love both of them pretty much equally though. Great pigmentation, great texture, great staying power.

  • 1. Yes, and it doesn't have to be expensive. I like the Swissco Precision Blending Sponge from Ulta.

    2. Depends on your skin tone, but I like Lorac TANtalizer highlighter/bronzer duo, $12 at Ulta (find it on the travel-sized product rack near the check out)

    4. What @doeydo said.

    5. Napoleon Perdis stick foundation works as a great concealer, but it's pricey. The Urban Decay concealer pencil is great, too.

    7. Blush doesn't have to be expensive, but it needs to be the right color. Try a few (on your face, not your hand) to find the right shade. Personally, I really like the ulta brand blush. (Side note: Ulta has a super flexible return policy, so maybe see if you can exchange the blush for the right color?)

    8. What kind of non-liquid eyeliner do you want? For a gel eyeliner, I actually like the ulta brand. Pencil, I like the Urban Decay 24/7 pencils. If you don't already have an eye primer, I highly recommend the Urban Decay Primer Potion.

    9. I like the Tarte lip tint pencil (crayon? idk what it's called) and Covergirl also makes a lip stain that I like.

We love talking makeup, don't we?

So I'm doing my own makeup for this wedding. I'm not a noob, so full face is no problem. I have a 20% off total purchase coupon for Ulta and I've got an Amazon Prime account, so the Luxury Beauty coupon will also work for me. I'm not 100% married to those two options, but they'll obviously save me money if I can shop that way. That said, I'm willing depart from them if there really is something better. I also live relatively close to a MAC store, but again, not married to them, because money.

    So, my plethora of questions:
    1. Is a blending sponge really worth it?

    2. Best subtle highlighter for cheeks, under $30 if possible

    3. I'm getting Duo dark lash adhesive, and I want a (cheap, because false lashes are such a one-day thing) semi-natural lash. I'm loving the look of these Andrea strip ones on ulta's website.

    4. A very light purple nail polish (the dress is a deep dark blue-eggplant kind of color)

    5. Favorite concealer for lightening up under the eyes. Doesn't have to be too heavy, as my dark circles are pretty mild and again, I'm buying highlighter.

    6. Best concealer for just a couple small spots of acne - I'm actually really clearing up! But I still get a couple spots.

    7. I kind of bought the wrong blush color last time I was out. It's not bad, but the right color is better for me. Worth the money to get it right, or save the cash? (bare minerals blush, FYI)

    8. A non-liquid waterproof eyeliner. I'm leaning towards stilla, either the stingray or damsel. I'd love to hear from people who own them, or if I can do even better.

    9. A sheer lipstick with maybe just a little berry tint to go with that grape-y colored dress (and my fair skin with yellow undertones, if that helps).

    OMG, goodbye money.

    1) Meh. Do you already use brushes for foundation, or just fingers, or what? I used to just use my hands, then moved on to brushes (which I liked OK), then tried a sponge. I'm a brush girl.

    2) I just use my ordinary concealer, which is just a shade too light for me, for highlighting. Sometimes I'll brush on a little of the Nyx Mosaic Highlighter, which is also nice.

    3) I really like Eyelure lashes, and Ulta will probably have a bunch.

    4) I got nothin' for this one -- my favorite purple is Seche Contemporary, but I think it might be discontinued.

    5) & 6) - This Nyx dark circle concealer is my holy grail under-eye thing right now, and sometimes I use it as a regular concealer on small spots.

    7) Can you exchange it? If so, do that. If not, I'd probably just suck it up. If it's not horrible, that is.

    8) I've been using the Tarteist Clay Paint Liner by Tarte, and I'm pretty thrilled with it, but it's not quite as smudgeproof as you may be looking for. If you're not fussing with it too much, it'll last a long time, but you can definitely move it. That said, it goes on SO smoothly, and comes with an awesome brush, so it kind of makes up for it (for me, anyway).

    9) Urban Decay just came out with a sheer line of their Revolution lipsticks. You could try Shame.
  • 1. Is a blending sponge really worth it?
Yes. I got the Real Techniques blending sponge for like $5 on sale at Ulta (you can get it there or Amazon) and it's so worth it.

    2. Best subtle highlighter for cheeks, under $30 if possible
I like ELFs highlight powder and Maybelline's Age Rewind Neutralizer concealer as a highlight.

    3. I'm getting Duo dark lash adhesive, and I want a (cheap, because false lashes are such a one-day thing) semi-natural lash. I'm loving the look of these Andrea strip ones on ulta's website.
Ardell 110 may be up your alley. I love the Demi Wispies but they may be too much.

    4. A very light purple nail polish (the dress is a deep dark blue-eggplant kind of color)
How much do you want to spend?

    5. Favorite concealer for lightening up under the eyes. Doesn't have to be too heavy, as my dark circles are pretty mild and again, I'm buying highlighter.
I like NYX concealer. Also at Ulta and Amazon.

    6. Best concealer for just a couple small spots of acne - I'm actually really clearing up! But I still get a couple spots.
I also use NYX concealer for this too.

    7. I kind of bought the wrong blush color last time I was out. It's not bad, but the right color is better for me. Worth the money to get it right, or save the cash? (bare minerals blush, FYI)
Definitely get one that feels better. Can you get a cheaper version? I typically save with my blushes because I don't find expensive ones are any better (sometimes they're worse).

    8. A non-liquid waterproof eyeliner. I'm leaning towards stilla, either the stingray or damsel. I'd love to hear from people who own them, or if I can do even better.
I don't use non-liquid or waterproof so I'm useless here. I hear wonders about Stila, Tarte, and UD, though.

    9. A sheer lipstick with maybe just a little berry tint to go with that grape-y colored dress (and my fair skin with yellow undertones, if that helps).

I also live relatively close to a MAC store, but again, not married to them, because money.

    So, my plethora of questions:
    1. Is a blending sponge really worth it? I think they are. I was using the one from London Soho I think for a while (Its got two pointed ends) and it was pretty good, then recently got a beauty blender and love it. I personally feel like its worth it, but if your happy with how your current application I wouldn't worry about it.

    2. Best subtle highlighter for cheeks, under $30 if possible. Revlon Photoready skinlights is my go to, they have one that is pinky tube and I use less than a pea size amount for the entire highlighting area- I don't know how it would go on anyone with a darker skin tone than me however.

    3. I'm getting Duo dark lash adhesive, and I want a (cheap, because false lashes are such a one-day thing) semi-natural lash. I'm loving the look of these Andrea strip ones on ulta's website. I've never used lashes, so I'm no help here....

    4. A very light purple nail polish (the dress is a deep dark blue-eggplant kind of color). I love Essie- they have tones of plums http://www.essie.com/Colors/plums.aspx

    5. Favorite concealer for lightening up under the eyes. Doesn't have to be too heavy, as my dark circles are pretty mild and again, I'm buying highlighter. Mabelene fit me concealer in a lighter color than your skin tone- better than my tarte concealer that is "made" for the undereye.

    6. Best concealer for just a couple small spots of acne - I'm actually really clearing up! But I still get a couple spots. I'd still pick the fit me, just in a color that is closer to your skintone, make sure you take time to set it and use primer on acne.

I haven't tried a non-liqued eyeliner- my eyes are too hooded to wear eyeliner on the top :(

    9. A sheer lipstick with maybe just a little berry tint to go with that grape-y colored dress (and my fair skin with yellow undertones, if that helps). Covergirl balm lippies are very sheer and moisturizing, provide a BIT of stain too.

    OMG, goodbye money.

  • 1. Is a blending sponge really worth it?
Yes!! It took me a few tries to really get the hang of using it but now it's a staple in my makeup bag.

    2. Best subtle highlighter for cheeks, under $30 if possible-
Laura Gellar's baked highlighter is pretty good. If you like using cream I like Benefit- Girl Meets Pearl. (I'm not a big fan of Benefit- High Beam)

    3. I'm getting Duo dark lash adhesive, and I want a (cheap, because false lashes are such a one-day thing) semi-natural lash. I'm loving the look of these Andrea strip ones on ulta's website.
I used to wear falsies almost every weekend just because I love the look. The Andrea and Ardell Natural are both good! I see them on clearance a lot at my local Meijer so that might be worth checking if you have one nearby.

    4. A very light purple nail polish (the dress is a deep dark blue-eggplant kind of color)
    Maybe OPI Care to Danse?

    5. Favorite concealer for lightening up under the eyes. Doesn't have to be too heavy, as my dark circles are pretty mild and again, I'm buying highlighter.
I love the NYX dark circle concealer. It comes in a little pod and it's been the absolute best thing for my circles.

    6. Best concealer for just a couple small spots of acne - I'm actually really clearing up! But I still get a couple spots. - I using NYX for this to.

    7. I kind of bought the wrong blush color last time I was out. It's not bad, but the right color is better for me. Worth the money to get it right, or save the cash? (bare minerals blush, FYI) Maybe look at getting a little sampler of Benefit or Laura Gellar that have a highlighter and a blush. You can usually get a nice small set for under $30.

    8. A non-liquid waterproof eyeliner. I'm leaning towards stilla, either the stingray or damsel. I'd love to hear from people who own them, or if I can do even better.
I use Lancome eyeliner and it's awesome but I'm not sure if it's waterproof or not.  (I think Lancome is in gift right now at Macy's so maybe that would work to get a new blush.)

    9. A sheer lipstick with maybe just a little berry tint to go with that grape-y colored dress (and my fair skin with yellow undertones, if that helps).
It's not lipstick but I really like Benefit's benetint.

    OMG, goodbye money
I'm right there with you! The amount of points I rack up at Ulta is slightly terrifying...
  • edited June 2015
  • @pinkrevenge I never knew that!!! Very interesting! I tried a little sample of the benetint and I'm hooked now. Damn Benefit for being pricey but so wonderful! ;)
  • So I can't really help with any of your questions except the first.  I don't use a specific "blending sponge."  What I use is the sponge wedges you find along with cotton balls at any store, but I love them!  I can't stand using fingers to spread liquid foundation. Sponges work way better, in my opinion.

5000 Comments 500 Love Its Second Anniversary First Answer
    edited April 2015
Ok I can't answer all of these but I'll try to help with the ones I have experience with:

    2. Best subtle highlighter for cheeks, under $30 if possible
I really love High Beam by Benefit (Sephora). To me, it gives just the right amount of subtle shimmer without any sparkle and it's easy to blend

    5. Favorite concealer for lightening up under the eyes. Doesn't have to be too heavy, as my dark circles are pretty mild and again, I'm buying highlighter.
I'm in love wit the under-eye concealer from "it" cosmetics. It's called "Bye Bye Under Eye anti-aging concealer." One little tube has lasted FOREVER and it's the only under-eye concealer that has ever actually worked for me because my eyes tend to get a little puffy, plus it has some moisturizers, vitamins and good stuff in it.
    6. Best concealer for just a couple small spots of acne - I'm actually really clearing up! But I still get a couple spots.
    BECCA from Sephora. Amazing.

    8. A non-liquid waterproof eyeliner. I'm leaning towards stilla, either the stingray or damsel. I'd love to hear from people who own them, or if I can do even better.
I'm partial to Stila. I really like their eye liners.

    9. A sheer lipstick with maybe just a little berry tint to go with that grape-y colored dress (and my fair skin with yellow undertones, if that helps).
I'm not a fan of lipstick. The only kind I've ever liked (and I have an entire drawer full of lipsticks cuz I'm an idiot and keep wanting to test out new ones) is Benefit. Best colors, and it feels good when you put it on. Not too thick or too dry, if that makes sense.

I do too. I'm not awesome about keeping my stuff clean, so I tend to buy cheap brushes and sponges that are easily replaceable. I'm open to getting really nice brushes and tools I would care for, but often when I'm thinking about it, I have to do the shopping like above, and then I think I've spent enough.

I've tried the entire spectrum of brushes, sponges, wedges, and just my hands. In the end, I like using just my hands but I always wash them really well right before I start applying makeup so I'm not putting germs all over my face.

For a long time I stuck with wedges, but a make-up artist friend told me that you lose a ton of product with that method because it gets absorbed, and she was right. I like the way they blend, though.

    So, my plethora of questions:
    1. Is a blending sponge really worth it?

Depends on what you are currently using. If you use brushes, then not in my opinion. If you're using your fingers, maybe. TBH I just use drugstore spongers. No way am I paying out the butt for a BeautyBlender when I can buy a huge pack of sponges for like $4.

    2. Best subtle highlighter for cheeks, under $30 if possible

I love the Bourjois Bronzer/Highlighter Duo. Bourjois is a European company, so you can't buy it everywhere, but it's awesome. http://www.amazon.com/Bourjois-Bronzing-Powder-Matte-Halee/dp/B000HKZQFM OR if you already have white/cream eyeshadow, you can seriously just use that.

    3. I'm getting Duo dark lash adhesive, and I want a (cheap, because false lashes are such a one-day thing) semi-natural lash. I'm loving the look of these Andrea strip ones on ulta's website.
I personally really like KISS lashes.

    4. A very light purple nail polish (the dress is a deep dark blue-eggplant kind of color)

Skipping this because I have a love/hate with nail polishes and don't have any good suggestions.

    5. Favorite concealer for lightening up under the eyes. Doesn't have to be too heavy, as my dark circles are pretty mild and again, I'm buying highlighter.

L'Oreal Visible Lift Under Eye Concealer http://www.amazon.com/LOreal-Paris-Visible-Absolute-Concealer/dp/B004Y9L3BI/ref=sr_1_2?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1428597898&sr=1-2&keywords=l'oreal+concealer

    6. Best concealer for just a couple small spots of acne - I'm actually really clearing up! But I still get a couple spots.

Sometimes I just use my under eye concealer on spots...but I truly, deeply love these two Revlon concealers: http://www.amazon.com/Revlon-Colorstay-Concealer-Light-Medium/dp/B00AXJA008/ref=sr_1_2?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1428597970&sr=1-2&keywords=revlon+concealer

    7. I kind of bought the wrong blush color last time I was out. It's not bad, but the right color is better for me. Worth the money to get it right, or save the cash? (bare minerals blush, FYI)

It is probably worth buying the right color blush. Try NYX, it's inexpensive, they have a wide range of colors, and it lasts (generally).

    8. A non-liquid waterproof eyeliner. I'm leaning towards stilla, either the stingray or damsel. I'd love to hear from people who own them, or if I can do even better.
I've got nothin'. But I do love Stilla in general.

    9. A sheer lipstick with maybe just a little berry tint to go with that grape-y colored dress (and my fair skin with yellow undertones, if that helps).

I am sure those boxes are now all kinds of jacked up, but I hope that helps. Just to specify, I didn't look at shades/colors when posting those links, but since you said you are fair-skinned (I am actually a ghost), I can vouch that they do make light shades/shades that look good on fair-skinned people for all of those products. AND I think almost everything should be available at drugstores/Ulta. If you want to splurge, things I splurge on are skincare/foundation, maybe sometimes concealer, and eyeshadow.
