White Vs. Ivory?!

So I went for the first time to try on dresses last night (so much fun!!)
Before going, in my mind I was SET on having a white dress! But my favorite dress that I tried on they only had it in the store in ivory color, and I actually really loved it...so now I'm completely torn...
What is everyone's thought on wearing an ivory (or white) dress?!
If it helps, my ceremony is going to be outside on a lawn with the ocean in the background...

Re: White Vs. Ivory?!

  • Honestly, I don't think it matters much. If you love the gown in ivory then get it! I was also set on a white dress before trying on gowns, and I ended up purchasing a candlelight ivory gown (it looks white to me, honestly).

You will be beautiful no matter what dress you choose!

  • I think it's completely fine and some people can't even tell the difference. My dress says it's "soft white" whatever the heck that is.

If you love it, get it!

  • I can't tell the difference most of the time either, and your guests won't be able to either. Just pick the colour that looks better on your skin.

  • Thank you for your help! I will be going with ivory then by the looks! :)
  • Unless it is a true, deep ivory I really can't tell the difference between all the whites out there.  And even dresses labeled as ivory look white to me.

And most of the time a true white dress looks horrid on people.  Only very few people can really pull off wearing a true white dress.

  • I asked to see what a white looked like vs. ivory. I was lost for words. The white was so white that it looked like it had a blue tint to it. And held up next to ivory, it made the ivory look like what I thought white would be. I was also told that it is really hard to pull off the white.

  • ivory=white for almost all people. Honestly, no one will know the difference. Ivory is just a shade of white.

When I tried on dresses the sales people wouldn't even put me in "white" dresses. I'm pale, and it washes me out terribly. Ivory on me looked white, and didn't make me look like a ghost. So if you love ivory, go for it!

    This.
  • Wedding ivory is basically white. The average person couldn't tell the difference.

And very few people can pull of white white.

  • I agree with PP's, while I couldn't tell the difference on the hanger, I'd be able to see if it was washing someone out or not. I second/third going with the color that looks best on you regardless of what it is  called.
