Puppy Names!

Okay pals, here's the deal.

I'm part of one of those "garage sale" pages on Facebook for my area and this one lady posted earlier today that she had a little dog come wondering up on her porch two days ago. She said that if no one comes to pick it up today she was taking it to animal control where I was sure that they would probably put the poor baby down. I may or may not have shed a couple tears looking at the pictures she posted of him. He was so cute just cuddled up in one of her deck chairs.

I've been (kind of) looking for a small short haired dog because my mom won't let me take "our" dog when I move out.

So of course, I'm on my way to pick up the puppy now. I could not live with myself if I let this lady take him to animal control. I talked to the lady and she said that the dog behaved very well with her two children and with her other dogs and he slept on her (screened in) front porch and her little chair with all the cushions in it. He just mainly wanted to cuddle with her all day. I went to Walmart & got him a little crate & a bed to stay in while I'm at work. I'm so excited!

So NOW, I need a name!! I'll attach some pictures so you guys can see what he looks like

Yep she took him to the vet and they scanned him and couldn't find anything. She searched for his owners for two days and couldn't find anyone.

This, and then some. Please do better due diligence than this woman to determine if this dog really has an owner out looking for it. A Facebook post is not sufficient.

When my sister's dog was lost, his little face was ALL over the internet. It wasn't until I went door to door with flyers that a neighbor came forward and said he'd been hiding under their deck all week. (He did have a microchip, but the neighbors didn't have him scanned.

This. That most definitely looks like a well cared for dog, not a stray. I bet someone is missing him terribly.

This. That most definitely looks like a well cared for dog, not a stray. I bet someone is missing him terribly.

Yeah I am definitely gonna make some flyers and put up just in case. And post on Facebook again. I just couldn't let her take him to animal control

I think you do have to inform AC or the SPCA anyway though, because obviously that's the first place a worried owner would check. I think they also have some official responsibility.

I agree that you should search for the owners a little harder. I would probably need to be medicated if one of my dogs just disappeared and I didn't find them.

My cousins brought their dog to my parents house and it escaped from our yard. We called every vet in town, animal control, and the humane society, and had it broadcast on local radio stations (my dad was friends with local radio stations through advertising stuff).

We split up into teams; 2 teams drove all around the city, 1 team walked the neighborhood, and 1 team road bikes around in a bigger radius than the walking team. We asked neighbors. We did everything.

Nothing.

The only saving grace was that the dog had a tag with my cousins' phone number on it. They got back home (a 4-hour drive) and had a message on their answering machine (this was in the days before cell phones and before micro chips). A lady a few blocks away saw the dog wandering and took her in, and was totally ready to keep her because of how sweet she was but knew she needed to track down the rightful owner.

She had called the same vets, animal control, and the humane society, and had left her phone number, name, and address, which is what we had done. We-- and this lady-- were all told that no one had reported a lost/found dog. Bullshit.

So keep looking. My cousins were just kids at the time and they cried the entire way home worrying about their lost dog. Some kid could be out there crying himself to sleep. Or some elderly lady whose only companion is this little dog, and maybe she doesn't have the resources to go out and look. Not trying to get melodramatic, but these are real possibilities.

How does that work?

You call them with a description of the dog and give your number if anyone calls in to claim it. 2 days is not enough time to even claim ownership, it's at LEAST 7 days, and it may be 30 in some places.

It's the same as if a stray ended up at the animal control - they have to hold it for a certain period to make sure the owner can't be found. Only after that period is the animal considered up for adoption.

A year or two ago we found a stray. We plastered the neighborhood with flyers. We posted adds on craigslist. We send flyers to the local shelters. We held onto the dog for 3 days before we took him to local shelter. The next day, the dog owners called us.

When I was a kid, our dog ran away and was missing for 2 weeks. Someone called us saying they had seen our missing dog flyer and a found dog flyer with similar description. The found dog flyers were on the other side of town, so we got very lucky that someone saw both and made the connection. Somehow our dog had managed to get 15 miles away from home (most likely with human help).

So, I agree that the dog looks pretty well cared for and it may be a good idea to make further attempts to find previous owners before getting too attached. Definitely give flyers with photos to shelters (if other lady hasn't already done so), since that is one of the first places that people look for lost pets. I'd be prepared for people to come forward as far as a week or two before getting too attached.

I know with our SPCA, if your turn in a found animal, you can request to be first in line to adopt if the owners aren't found. Let them know that you want the dog, so if they don't find the owners, you can adopt him rather than him being put down.

I think our requires a min of 10 days before they look into adoptions

Yeah, I'm going to jump on the band wagon and say I don't think this has been handled well so far. Find your areas lost pet facebook groups, hang flyers and notify every shelter... not rush into puppy names.

Thanks pals! I've made another Facebook post and my dad drove him around the neighborhood where he was found and literally no one claimed him. If no one claims him before like 3pm tomorrow, I'm taking him to our local animal shelter and they will post him on their website as a "stray" dog under their care. And if no one claims him after 7 days he'll be out on their adoption list. I hope that if he does belong to someone they'll look there.
