misophonia

Anyone else have misophonia? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia

Mine is usually at a very low level and I can tolerate things without needing to put much effort into said tolerance but OMG today everything is amplified and I am just IN A MOOD because of it.

That being said, I did just find out a co-worker also has it so at least I can commiserate with someone who understands why I want to stab our other co-worker for the very simple act of eating something crunchy like an apple.

Re: misophonia

  • Whenever I eat vegetables or apples and such at my desk I fear that someone near me hates me.

  • I don't have misophonia, but I do hate the sound of people chewing ANYTHING. It makes my eye twitch.

I promise it's us and not you! Eat your vegetables and apples, I usually just need to remove myself from the room since I know it's my problem.

  • You would hate me.  It takes me like 30 minutes to eat one apple.  I cut them into small pieces and just pick at the plate.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

That's the thing, most of the time I have zero issues or it's just a really really small annoyance. I don't know what is going on with me today that it is like everything has been turned up to 11.

  • I wouldn't classify as having misophonia but there are sounds that drive me crazy, such as popping or cracking joints, chewing loudly and people who talk on their cells phones while riding the redline.
  • I think I have misophonia for one of the owner's voices. Because he's been talking all day every day and I'm pretty sure I'm going to murder him soon.
  • I don't have misophonia, but I smell everything. It makes it hard to be in public sometimes.  I am terrified of what will happen when I get pregnant, because I'm regularly sensitive and can get nauseous.

  • There are certain sounds my friends at work and I cannot tolerate.  Our disgusting boss chews LOUDLY with his mouth open, and I swear only brings crunchy fucking food to work. It makes me want to throw things at him.

We were in a training class the other day and this guy was trying to open his potato chip bag and the crinkling was like nails on a chalkboard for like 3 minutes straight.

We also have a nail clipper guy in the office, and it's EVERY DAY.
  • I can't take it when people sniff, like if their nose is running or they have allergies or something. It gives me the eebie-jeebies. I'm not a germaphobe, I just hate the sound.

This isn't really misophonia, but I hate it when people are listening to music with headphones and you can still hear it. Apple's little white earbuds are shitty and sound leaks from them all the time, even when you don't have the volume up that loud, and it drives me crazy, especially on the train or bus.

I don't have this, but I have severe migraines and certain frequencies bother me more than others including voice pitches. When I'm in the middle of a migraine, everything is amplified and it makes me stabby. I understand completely!
  • My co worker has misophonia... I just try not to be offended/feel like a loud, chewing cow when she closes her door during lunch time.

I don't know if my H has misphonia or not....but he certainly has sound sensitivity. He'll get easily annoyed by a clicking noise while driving, or something rolling around in the trunk for example. He' hears a ton of little sounds that  I never notice or just tune out. I wouldn't say he gets angry though, just annoyance. Sometimes he gets annoyed enough to do whatever he can to find the sound and stop it (like a rattle in the car).

  • I don't think I have misophonia but I do have freakishly good hearing. Like I can hear my neighbor's cell phone vibrating in the apartment catty-corner to mine.

Side note, my boss is always crunching or talking with her mouth full. Ewww.

  • I cannot handle certain sounds anymore. H has  TMJ, and it makes me not want to eat dinner with him, anymore.  I can't handle eating salads for too long, the noise starts to annoy me. I, also, hate the radio.  I am the only person who doesn't listen to ANYTHING while they are driving.  I'm like a little old lady... I just like peace and quiet.

Is the visceral reaction I have to Rush Limbaugh's voice misophonia? Is it misophonia when I see certain usernames as the most recent response on a thread and I become ragey knowing they're talking out of their ass?

I hope it is, because I needed a word for it.
I'd say probably yes to Rush Limbaugh but we def need a word for the second thing.

  • I first heard about misophonia from @ohannabelle. I'm about 99% sure my assistant has it. She gets unreasonably mad about typing/mouse clicks/the printer (um, we work in an office) and other stuff. She can hear me crumple up a granola bar wrapper to throw it away or set my mug on my desk from 50 feet away when my office door is closed. She'll come running in and bitch for 10 minutes about how she can't get anything done.

I mean, I get that she struggles, but omfg...find a work around!

  • I don't have it but I'm always paranoid I'm ruining the life of someone who does, because I am the WORLD'S LOUDEST CHEWER. I don't know why. I take small bites. I chew with my mouth closed. There's nothing weird with my teeth. But yet all my loved ones are constantly commenting on it, wondering how I can possibly be making that much noise. I'm sorry, everyone. I'm the one you hate in your office because you can hear me eating two crackers from the other end of the hallway.

My best friend at the time/college roommate was a FREAK about studying, and our freshman year told me I was typing too loud in our dorm room. Apparently she was allowed to study but I was not allowed to do my homework on my computer.

I was going to call it intense papal loathing but that might work.

Um, I would not have complained, about anything, to my boss in a million years when I was an assistant. Certainly not about her behaviors or about office sounds. I would have (rightly) assumed that complaining would make me look like a whiner and a shirker. How is your assistant still employed?

I don't have any diagnosed sound sensitivity, but I can tell you that certain frequencies (often car doors slamming, of all things) really bother me. And so help me god, if FI is cooking and can't manage to get the damn pots and pans out of the cupboard quietly I am ready to lose my mind. I need one of these:

Yep, I have it, diagnosed, signed, sealed, delivered, and it's a bitch. Using this self diagnostic scale,
    http://www.misophonia.com/misophonia-self-test/ I vary between a 5 (normal ? days) and a 7 (high stress days.)

(That's funny that you mentioned the dreaded granola bar wrapper. I hate those fuckers. Hate. My daughter eats a lot of granola bars, and I know that sound.)

And yep, when you have it, you need a work around, because it's nobody else's problem, and I'm not going to constantly explain or ask for special accommodations. Some people seem to respond well to anti anxiety meds, but most people just need to deal, and find coping mechanisms.
(I cringed typing the word "coping." I dislike the sound of  it.)

At work, I'd avoid sitting near desk eaters who might crinkle wrappers, and I wore double sided phone headsets, rather than the one ear type, even when I wasn't taking calls. I play low music so that I have something to focus my hearing on. On bad days, I'd "go out" to lunch to avoid the break room.  I carry ear plugs. I only go to movies at the almost empty 11 AM showings, because I can't even fucking deal with popcorn sounds. That's honestly one of the worst.  Puts me straight past irritated into pure seething rage. Gum cracking honestly makes me want to hit people.
At home, nothing's eaten out of a wrapper.  Chips and granola bars and candy on a plate or bowl.

I have actually just bolted from situations, without a word. Just zoom, I'm gone, because the need to scream at someone is so overwhelming.

My sound triggers are mostly c sounds. Crinkling, crackling, that kind of noise. The word cocoa just pisses me off beyond anything reasonable. We don't use it. We say, pass the Droste or Hershey's or whatever. I can't order it because they'll say it to me. Comfy makes me shudder and cringe, but cocoa's just frikking nails on a chalkboard. Aaaaargh!!! I get pissed off just typing it.

I misread the post title as misophobia, and thought you were afraid of miso, or something.

KatieinBkln I also HATE the sound of pots and pans clanking. Though usually I am the one taking them out of the cabinet, and I wish they would come out SILENTLY. Also, dripping water. Drives me batty. If I'm in bed, and I can hear water dripping somewhere, I have to check every faucet to make sure they are off (even the host outside). But I'm pretty sure that's just be being neurotic.]

ETA: I forgot about teeth grinding. FI grinds his teeth in his sleep sometimes, and I want to shake him awake. But I would consider that more of a fingernails-on-the-chalkboard kind of thing...
