Do I mention...

Well, this is awkward. My fiancée and I are having a disagreement, so I figured I would ask you lovely people. I wasn't sure which forum to put this in since it has to do with about three things.

So. Here's the situation. We're getting married on August 22 at a state park in NY. Our invitations state this, and I personally feel that it should be painfully obvious that three inch heels are probably not going to be the brightest thing to wear. The ceremony itself is being held on a well-maintained lawn, and there's grass all over the place, and the reception is literally right across the road, in a pavilion that is surrounded by a grassy area.

My question: Should we mention something about attire/footwear considering the fact that everything but the reception will be outdoors (we do have a backup plan in case of rain) on the invitations or direction cards? Or do we just hope that our guests are bright enough to figure it out?

Re: Do I mention...

  • No, I wouldn't mention it on the invitatons. As you said, it should be pretty obvious. Do you have a wedding website, maybe put something there about this being a garden wedding? My wedding was similar as it was on a grassy area near the beach, and the reception was in the beach club. We put it on the website and had no problems.

  • Don't put it on the invitations but if you have a website I would do that and then also spread the word. Just because it is in a state park I don't think I would assume it was on grass so it would be nice to have that communicated somehow.  Ours is at a place with Garden in the name but we are using word of mouth to let people know the ceremony is being held on grass and that the entire event is outside (we have rain plans, and reception is under a giant tent) so guests can make informed decisions on footwear, bringing a sweater/jacket etc.

Once our RSVPs are in I plan to contact those from my side and FI will do his friends/family to just say hey FYI it's on grass and also outside so we wanted you to know.

I would NOT put it on the invitation. You could pass along the SUGGESTION of not wearing 3 inch heels by word of mouth if you would like. I am thinking at least 99% of the people coming if not all will know what shoes not to wear
  • No, I wouldn't mention shoe types. Just say something like "the ceremony will be held on the grassy lawn by blah blah blah..." on your inserts. Anyone who reads that will get it. If they don't, it's their own fault.

If its in your budget, you could have a basket of flip flops. Old navy has cheap ones and you can usually google coupon codes online.

  • Another vote not to put on invite but if you have a website to put on it "the ceremony will be held on a beautiful grassy area followed by an outdoord reception." You can put "follwed by an outdoor " on your invitiation. That right there should be a big clue to any female guests, that hey, outdoor reception usually means, on grass. The other perk to putting that it's an outdoor reception on your invite is that guests will check the weather then & dress accordingly. As a guest, I'll know to dress for a summer event outside instead of dressing for being in an air conditioned building. Example, I'd be skipping the silk dress for an outdoor summer wedding or any other fabric that I'll sweat in & it turn out bad.
  • Also if its in your budget, they make these little plastic tips to put on your heels to keep you from sinking in grass, I haven't looked into them myself, but they could be more cost effective than flip flops, as you could buy in bulk and not worry about sizing.
