Wedding Pie

My fiance and I are both pie lovers and neither of us care much for cake.  Our wedding is in October, so we are opting for pumpkin and apple pie rather than the traditional wedding cake.  It's seasonally appropriate and it's more "us". 

What I can't decide is how we should handle the cutting of the "cake" moment.  I still want it to be a special moment but cutting into a one-tier pie feels... blas

  • As long as whatever you cut is available to all your guests, you can cut a pie or whatever you choose in lieu of cake. Do exactly what you would do at a cake-cutting with the pie or whatever you cut, and it shouldn't feel blase.

  • I had an October wedding and we had pie too.  We just had a pie (because we had 10 pies total) that was more decorative than the others and we cut into that one.  It was cute and fine and totally satisfied the cake cutting element of the wedding.  As PP mentioned you can have a couple different pies and elevate them on different pie stands, or those cut wood rounds, so that they are staggered and just have the special cutting pie elevated the highest, it will have the same impact as a multi tiered cake.  I think pies are beautiful, especially ones with decorative detail done in pastry on top so I really don't think you need to worry.
  • Thanks for all of the input, ladies!  Love the idea of the elevated tray and still using a topper.  I saw one on Etsy that says "For Like Ever" and I thought it was pretty adorable.  LoL

    I'm also glad to hear that, from a guest's perspective, this is a fun idea, too!  Sometimes in the midst of all the planning, it's hard to know how guests will feel about some of the choices!  :)

  • Fiance's cousin had a small two-tier cake to cut and then served pie to guests instead of cake. No one minded that they weren't being served the same thing that was ceremonially cut, and the pie was delicious. Cutting into a pie could work just as well, but the first bites might be a little messier than cake (definitely use forks!).

    Maybe no one minded, but people could. They really shouldn't have displayed and eaten something that wasn't available to everyone. That would be like serving chicken to everyone while B&G eat lobster. 

    I see no problem cutting into a pie and I like PP's suggestions of how to make it look a little nicer. Maybe use a creamier pie - like a french silk or lemon meringue instead of a goopy cherry or apple pie to feed to each other.

  • I went to a wedding where "preferred" people such as the WP and parents got a better cake, champagne, and free drinks and I didn't. I cared. I care a lot when the aunt next to me was gushing about this white chocolate cake with lime curd and how refreshing and nice it was and then I got a chunk of grocery store yellow cake plopped in my face and had to pay for a drink to wash it down.

    If cake is not going to be served, it is rude to the guests to cut a "presentation only" cake because it misleads guests into believing cake will be served to them when it won't be. This goes for anything "presented" or available only to the couple or a limited group but not to everyone present.

    I can see where you're coming from - but if the bride and groom are cutting one tier of a smaller-than-nine-inch cake (possibly even Styrofoam and not even cake) for the pictures only, and there are pies on display for dessert... I have a hard time believing guests are going to get the wrong impression.

    I don't agree.  Cutting a cake tells the guests that you are serving cake.  Not to do so leads them on, and that's inconsiderate of them.  There's no requirement that the bride and groom eat cake, cut or not, but if you (generic) cut something, you need to serve it.

    It's okay for the couple to cut and serve only pie or another dessert.  But if they cut a cake, they need to serve it.  A "presentation only" cake is rude-even if it's just a layer and the rest is a fake styrofoam prop.  So if they want to serve only pie, then they should cut only pie.
  • Cut it the way you would with a cake.
