Our officiant made an "oops"...

So we got our official marriage license from the state on Friday afternoon. Exciting! Then we look closer and realize our officiant recorded the marriage a month after the actual date (we got married on March 28, he filed it as April 28)... We immediately emailed the company to see what can be done about it. The "souvenir" certificate that we got the day of the wedding is dated correctly, but the license itself isn't. Umm..

I freaked out because yes, we were married on March 28th for all intents and purposes, we signed the paperwork, said the vows... and now the paper, which we all preach about on here as being so significant, isn't even correct!!!

I've been looking in to filing an amendment with the recorder but there isn't anything available online so I'm waiting for the officiant to get back to us.

  • I wonder how he was even able to file it as April 28th since, well April 28th hasn't happened yet.

Yep... this. I suspect it hasn't been filed at all because we're not yet capable of time travel.

No stress, though! Seriously. Family-related proceedings are generally super simple to correct. It may have to be amended, but it probably happens a lot.

  • Instead of waiting for the officiant to get back to you, I would just call the county clerk's office to discuss what you should do. As PP said, it seems odd that it could even have been filed given the fact that it hasn't been April 28th yet, so this is definitely something you need to get sorted out.

No worries. It will get fixed. It may be a minor pain in the ass to file or do whatever you need to do, but it will get fixed!

That was the first thing we were like wtf how can this happen? I'm not sure if in our county you can file ahead and pick your own date, or if whomever this goes through at the recorder's office didn't notice it.

I'm going to try and get through at the clerk's office on my lunch break.

  • Looks like you better get planning on your non-PPD-PPD. ;P

HAHA my mom was like "does this mean we can do it all again?!"

I keep calling DH my not-husband. What can you do but joke about it?

  • Our officiant did the same thing.  He wrote July 28 (the date the license expired) instead of June 28 (the date we got married).  I discovered it before we filed it and called the probate court.  They advised me he could correct it and initial it before filing.  Seeing as it wasn't even July yet, they were pretty convinced of the error and it wasn't a problem. There was also a process through the court if an error is discovered after it is filed. Not sure what state you are in (we are in Ohio) but I am sure there is a process for corrections. The officiant should be able to take care of it, but as it was his/her error, he or she should pay any court fees associated with filing an amended certificate.

Through our clerk's office I found where you can request changes, though it says for typographic errors in Bride/Groom's name. I'm hoping that a similar request could be made for the date issue. I let the officiant know we discovered this and hoped any fees would be covered since it wasn't our mistake. Just waiting to hear back now to submit a request.

Lucky for us this happens to be the worst thing that happened surrounding the wedding, so I'm not terribly worried about it.

  • They should be able to correct the date as well.  Having worked as an attorney for almost a decade, I can assure you the court has dealt with typos for things other than names on marriage licenses before and has a procedure for fixing them.

  • My officiant made a mistake too. But she put June 15 instead of June 14. I contacted the clerk and the officiant, and the clerk sent the officiant a new license or amendment and the officiant sent it back with the correct date. Then the clerk sent me a certified copy with the correct date.
It was easy to fix. I guess this isn't uncommon.

  • Hooray! They emailed us back and the officiant is going to handle everything, including the fees. I just have to make sure this won't effect DH's coverage on my insurance since they wanted proof within 30 calendar days and that won't happen now..
