Try the World

I just came across this website: http://www.trytheworld.com/

It's basically like Ipsy but with food (which I think may have been mentioned in that huge Ipsy thread a while back? I don't remember).

Basically every two months, a renowned chef from a different part of the world puts together local items for this box and then it gets shipped to you. FBIL and FSIL are major foodies and world travelers, so I'm already thinking, "Hm... Christmas gift?" (I know I know, it's only April. How horrendous to think of Christmas gifts right now!)

There's also a shop on the site where you can order single items from different countries, like cookies from France, tea from Morocco, etc.

I'm really excited right now!

Has anyone tried this, by any chance, or have you tried any other type of food subscription? I've always wanted to do a bacon of the month club but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have a friend who was gifted a wine of the month club, but she kept giving me the wine cuz she said she couldn't drink it fast enough (how is one bottle of wine per month too much?!) I'm wondering if this would be a cool thing or if a lot of it [depending on what it is] would end up getting thrown out?

Re: Try the World

  • We got a sausage of the month subscription for FIL for his birthday one year. He said he liked it but I have no idea if he was being polite or if it was actually cool.

This sounds intriguing. If you do it, come back and review how it goes!

The only thing I don't like about it is that it SEEMS like they might send a lot of jam (I'm assuming this based on what's available in the online shop. I have no idea if this is true or not).

I hate jam. We have a jar in our fridge that FILs made; they grow amazing organic fruit-- lots of different kinds-- and then spend an entire weekend making jam and canning it. Their's is the most delicious jam I've ever tasted, and even so, I won't eat it. It's been in the fridge for over 2 years now.

If the box had a bunch of stuff like that, I'd be bummed out. But I still think it's worth a shot. You can order just 1 or just a few, so that's better than committing to a year supply of crap you don't want.

  • I have been getting NatureBox for quite awhile now. They ship you 5 snacks a month for $20. They have a lot of options to choose the stuff you like, and the bags are petty big. I feel like it's a good deal and "healthy"

  • Looks interesting. I feel like it could be really good, but it would depend on the products themselves and (for me) how characteristic they actually are of that county. I mean, I could buy fancy jams and mustards at my local high-end grocery story. I would want something truly unique from a service like this, and I'm not sure if their list of products really reflects that.

  • DH and I get Graze (which is a snack box: $6/box of 4 mini snacks) and Blue Apron (a meal delivery service basically). I've seen Try the World advertised, and considered it. We got I Love Food once (which seems like a similar concept, only not so focused on worldly foods), and I didn't really care for it.

DH gave his family some subscription boxes for Christmas a couple of years ago, and they liked it so much that for this past Christmas his gift was to renew them: he got his dad a coffee of the month subscription the first year, and a BBQ of the month (with sauces and spices, not meat) the second year; his mom he got Taste Trunk (which is sort of like Try the World, but all desserts and a focus on small-batch items); for SiL he got some mommy-and-me kinda thing.
