Have we talked about vacuums?

I never got a real vacuum- I've been making do with a stupid little Walmart $40 piece of crap. It's time to invest in a real one! So I have a thing for canister ones. It's what I grew up with and to me it's easy to plop it in the corner of the room and just walk with the stick, and not have to push the whole weight around. But DH thinks that is stupid and wants an upright. We noticed there are some Dysons which are like a combination. So what kind do you have/ recommend? (budget under 500)

I had a vacuum thread a few months ago when I used my Macy's registry rewards... I ended up with a Shark bagless vac with a bare floor attachment (Navigator with liftoff). Love it.

I think Dysons are super overrated, especially if you don't have shag carpet and 3 sheepdogs.

  • We have a Dyson.  We like it.  We do not have shag carpet, but we do have 2 dogs that shed.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Bissel Healthy Home.
  • We have a shark too. This one>

I like it and it has great suction.

  • I will always recommend Dyson. I worked for them for 4 years, owned one BEFORE I worked for them, and I have one now in my home. They are amazing vacs!
  • I had a vacuum thread a couple months ago.  It took me some time to finally make a decision, but we ended up buying a Shark Rotator Professional Lift Away from Costco.  LOVE IT!  We have mostly hardwood floors, and the bare floor attachment is awesome!   Plus with the lift away, you can carry the canister and do things like stairs or other harder to reach areas much easier!  And it works on the few area rugs we have wonderfully.....the suction is amazing.  I seriously don't mind vacuuming anymore.
  • We've got the Dyson Animal... but we have 2 shedding dogs and live in a construction zone, so lots of dust etc.  My only complaint is that it's pretty heavy so it's not easy to use on stairs.

  • I've had my Dyson for nearly 10 years. It still works great. But I have 4 furry inside pets so I needed the Dyson Animal. My step-mom loves her Shark, but she also has no pets or kids in her home.

  • Thanks everyone!! We have a cat right but I think I shed more hair than she does haha

  • We currently have a Garry the my FIL bought a few years ago. It works good and I have no complaints. But we'll be upgrading soon, probably to a Dyson.
  • We have a Dyson and I really like it.   We also have Central Vac which is convenient on the hardwood floors but I loathe the carpet attachment and think it well....sucks.
  • We have the Shark Navigator with Liftoff as well. We have 3 dogs and a cat and it works amazingly.

  • Does anyone has a roomba? I'd assume they are better for like thin carpet found in my office at work but not so good for actual thick carpet and pets. But that's just my guess?

I got one for my mom a few years ago...it mostly just terrified the dogs (a golden retriever and a yellow lab). It did keep the dog hair tumbleweeds to a minimum but didn't really go beyond that, and filled up really quickly (even running daily). Maybe they've gotten better routing and suction since then, but the capacity issue would still be a concern.

  • Another vote for the Dyson animal.  It does great with dust as well as my cat's hair/dander.  5 years old and still going strong.

H and I got one about a month ago, the 770. I absolutely LOVE it. We have two cats, one that sheds a shitton, as well as tile floors which = litter everywhere. We have it set to auto run while we're at work, we dispose of the canister when we get home and that's it. We used to have to vacuum at least every other day and now we just do the corners every other week. Yes, it was expensive, but as someone who loathes vacuuming it was a great investment.

We don't have carpeting but we do have a couple of carpets what picks up everything as well. We were surprised about that one. BBB has a great refund policy though; I bet if it doesn't work for you you could return it.

We got the Roomba 880 a couple of months ago.  We have a short haired cat, but he somehow sheds a lot!  It probably doesn't help that he loves the clean carpet so he rolls around all over it.  :)

We have it set on a timer to run every day at 2PM (while we're at work).  We typically have to empty the container every other day (sometimes every day, depends on how messy the cat was) but you pull it out, dump it out, put it back in.  NBD.

We LOVE it.  We have carpet everywhere except the bathrooms and the kitchen and it does a good job everywhere.  It can get under just about everything and we have zero dust.

It scared the cat at first and he would do a mix of run after it and hide from it, but now he realized that if he smacks the front of it, the Roomba will turn around.  Poor Roomba :)

We've noticed that it rarely gets stuck on or gets stuff stuck in it.  I've watched it almost eat a cord and then be smart enough to drop it.  We do try to keep stuff picked up off the floor because even though the Roomba can navigate almost all of them, we try to provide as few obstacles as possible.

My only problem is our cat won't ride it. ;)

This is what our carpet looks like (clicky in case the photo didn't work) Google says it is frieze type.

We have area rugs and a pet who covers them in fur (she's molting now, it's not pretty). The roomba is great for an overall clean and we run it about once a week but every now and then we need to do a serious, in depth vacuuming, which is why we have the upright. It's also good to keep a handheld around for spot vacuuming when you don't want to get too involved.

  • Miele canister vac all the way. I am really not a Dyson fan, even at 1/3 the price. Got my Miele at BBB and it is fantastic.
  • There's a thread on The Nest right now - money matters board - that has a few more positive recommendations for the roomba. I want the scooba - I don't mind vacuuming but I fucking hate mopping my floors.
  • I have a roomba.  Technically it belongs to my parents, but it couldn't handle the shedding from our dog (a lab, but she tends to shed a lot). When we got it we owned a newfie-lab mix and a lab, and the poor roomba didn't stand a chance.  Our roomba is also like six years old, so that's a factor too.  Maybe the new ones are better.

I just moved and my apartment doesn't have a space to keep a vacuum, so my parents gave me the roomba. It works okay.  If I had high volume traffic or even a cat I don't think it would be able to handle it.

  • I have a Dyson animal, and I probably wouldn't recommend it - far too pricey for a vacuum that you can't ride, haha.  Actually I think there are many others on the market that do the same job for a lot less money.

  • Miele.  It's awesome and lasts forever.

FI has done waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more research into Roombas than I have, and he says the newest is by far the very best and a vast improvement over the older ones.....

  • We got the Neato XV Signature Pro for Christmas and absolutely love it. We have two dogs and it does great at picking up their hair. We have it set to run twice a week.  We do make sure to pick up any clutter and stuff it could choke on, but we don't usually have much trouble with it getting stuck on anything.  When debating between the Neato and Roomba, the Neato seemed to have better reviews and slightly better price point. We do still have an upright vacuum, but we haven't had to use it even once since we got Neato.  But, I would definitely recommend it.

That's what my mom had for literally my entire life- the same one vacuum from like 1975. The thing kicked ass, I wasn't sure if that brand was even still around.

  • I currently have a small Eureka canister vac, but I registered for a Miele upright. They're supposed to be amazing.

They rock! I asked a vacuum repair guy what to get and what to avoid and he was a super fan of the Miele for its longevity and simple design (less breakage, easier to fix).

Miele also makes tip top dishwashers.
