Game of Thrones (Spoilers)

We're five episodes into the season now, and we haven't talked about it.

Last nights episode was really good despite the fact that it flew by way to fast for me.

Things I liked:

Danerys got her Mother of Dragons attitude on, which  was awesome!!!

Getting to see what normally happens to those people who are afflicted with Grey-Scale.  I know we've heard more about it, but it was really cool seeing how far it progresses.

Grey-Worm finally talking about his feelings.  It was really sweet, and I feel like once Grey-worm heals better, he'll be able to turn his feelings into some awesome revenge power.

Jon Snow and the deal he made with the free folk.  It took some big balls, especially with how divided the Night's Watch are.  I'm a little worried that there will be a mutiny while he's gone.

Things I can't wait to see play out:

Mormont's  Grey-scale infection, and Tyrion.  We don't want Tyrion stranded somewhere.

How is Sansa going to kill the Bolton's.  Will she wait till Stanis gets there, or will she assassinate her FI on their wedding night.  Either way the Bolton's should probably be dead soon.

What are your thoughts on the season so far?  What are you looking forward to?

Re: Game of Thrones (Spoilers)

  • The books have been out for like 10 years. . . do we really need to put spoiler alerts on posts?

I just find it funny :-P

The show has started departing from the book plots.  Not everyone wants to read the books, or find Martins writing style appealing, but do enjoy the HBO series.

Well, considering that in the book Barristan Selmy is still alive and it's "Arya" (really Jeyne Poole) who is betrothed to Ramsay, not Sansa...yeah, I'd say a spoiler alert is the polite thing to do.

(among a million other differences, obviously - entire characters/storylines written out, etc)

Yep, consider me one of the pissed.  I like the books even though Martin has a habit to let the plot lag in the middle of every one.  FI likes the show and even though I'm not happy about the new direction, at least the new plot lines are still interesting, even if they're not same.

  • I'm a purist so I'd be pissed.  But I stopped reading the books because I got sick of spending $20 on a paperback only to have Martin use the, IMO, lazy literary plot cop out of killing every single person all the time.

Why would I invest time and money in this huge series if you are just going to kill everyone?!

I don't get HBO and I keep forgetting to stream the series. . . It's on a very long list of Shit I Need to Watch ><

@PrettyGirlLost   I'm so used to film and TV adaptations screwing up that I can no longer be insufferably angry.  I would be angry at basically everything I watch.   Instead I compartmentalize in my head that they are two, very separate things that just happen to have the same name.

I have a list like that too.  It's not quite as long as my reading list though so right now books are what I've been focused on.

  • Oh my God, let's not speak of books, ok?  I think I have more books on my shelves that I need to read than I can actually read in my lifetime. . . and I KEEP BUYING MORE!!!!!!

Yep.  Though I switched to an E-reader because it sucks moving 350 books across country twice in 3 years. I currently have more books lined up on my kindle to read, no to mention the ones I want to reread, than the entire group I moved across country.

Shh, don't let DH hear this madness!!!  I just really like physically holding my books when I read.  He hates moving them, lol.

Oh I still have my paperbacks, and hardbacks. It's just that the Kindle was a gift so I couldn't not use it. Your secret is safe with me.

  • Tyrion's face when he saw the dragon (Drogon?) was amazing...  so perfectly acted.

And I really, really need the Bolton's to meet their demise.  I'm not a fan of Theon/Reek, but would love to see him get his revenge on Ramsey...  although I'd like to see Sansa come into her own and take care of business, too :)

And I never thought I'd say this, because I am Team Stark all the way, but Stanis is growing on me...  they're humanizing him, and I like it.

I was really tempted to buy the books and start reading, but now I hear how different things are going, so I'm not sure I want to (and oh yeah, the money factor to buy all these books, lol).

Yea, I think it's Drogon. You could see the wheels in Tyrion's head going "guess, it's true"

Being Team Stannis isn't anti-Stark. Ned Stark was throwing his support behind Stannis as Robert's true heir before Joffrey beheaded him. Robb only went to war and became "the King of the North" because of his father's death.

I hated the Valyria scene. Not because it wasn't true to the book, but because those stonemen were straight up zombies and I DON'T DO ZOMBIES. Walking Dead? Stay the fuck away from me.

That's so funny, FI also said, "I didn't ask for 'Walking Dead' in my 'Game of Thrones.'"

In terms of the show diverting from the book plot, probably UO, but I would kind of love that if I was a fan of the books (I've admittedly never read them). It would be like getting a do-over of the series, right? There are some books that I have read and loved, and I think it would be cool to see a beautifully filmed and acted series in which the characters do different things than what's established in the books.

I agree that the grey-scale people were a bit zombie-esque

I want to see Danerys' wedding too. But I really hope that it isn't to that particular adviser/ family head. She could do so much better. Plus I kinda like the guy that she's sleeping with.

  • I just watched the latest episode last night... Dude. I'm so mad. I'm a book reader and I'm mad. The book plots are SO good and SO intricate and complex and the characters grow and change and learn and make complicated decisions... and the show is just turning everything into a cartoony boob-fest with people dying just for a cliff-hanger. Ugh.

I'm not against the show changing plot lines, adding characters, etc., but it needs to make some goddamn sense. Ain't no way Barristan freaking Selmy would have been killed in an alley by Sons of the Harpy. Littlefinger leaving Sansa (accused of regicide, wanted by Cersei, and also STILL MARRIED TO TYRION) in the hands of the man who killed her family and his insane son who Littlefinger admittedly knows nothing about?? Nope. Nope nope nope. Makes no sense. Makes me so ragey.

Didn't read the books but yeah, I was like, no way, no way is he going to try to marry her to a Bolton, especially THAT Bolton. And then he left her. Worst fiance choice EVER.

  • No comments on the show (aside from the actor playing Ramsay Bolton being great at playing the psycho, but Roose's actor is better)....but regarding the comment on how long the books have been out....

I posted a comment about the last Harry Potter film and Snape when it came out while I was in law school. I literally had a girl from class on facebook bitch about me "ruining" it for her with "spoilers". Evil Chipmunk stated she was sorry for failing to realize that not everyone has read an NY Times best seller that's been out for over 3 years before becoming a movie....the snark went over the whiney gals head...sigh
  • I've read all the books. This season they have changed quite a lot. Characters written out entirely, and their actions being portrayed by characters we already know. I'm both enjoying the novelty of not knowing what will happen, and being annoyed that certain scenes or people are missing from the show.

I used to hate Stannis but I'm really starting to enjoy his character. Still can't stand Melisandre though.

Next year they'll probably entirely be out of written material to go off of, so that will get really interesting.

The bolded -  This is why I think that the show is deviating so much from the books.  If they kept the book plots then the show would just kind of drop off.  If they switch it up then they can stretch the series out a bit more.

And ditto on Melisandre that woman makes me throw-up a little every time she does/ says something.

I am halfway through the fourth book, and FI is half way through the fifth book. Personally, I think that the books and show are different enough that they are both interesting. They change so much in the show (entire characters disappear! Intricate storylines are reduced to 10-minute clips!) that sometimes they feel like completely different worlds.

HOWEVER, I do not recommend reading the books and watching the show concurrently. It is super confusing. During pretty much every episode, either FI or I have to ask, "Did X happen in the book or the show? Or both?" To be honest I can't keep some of the details straight.
