Wtf?

So last night FI was telling me about a fairly large wedding his country club has tonight. I, being generally sane and rational, said, "so you'll be working late tomorrow then."

His reply? "No, their caterers arrived from New Orleans tonight and were unloading when I left."

Now, since the wedding is not using the restaurant, just the space, they're paying double in rental fees.

But this is the kicker - we're 400+ miles from New Orleans. So not only are they paying double for an already fairly expensive venue, but they are also paying for this caterer to come 400 miles, provide all their food, and then go back 400 miles.

Wat.

I mean, it appears they're hosting okay - they were unloading a shit-ton of food, from what FI was saying. But I cannot imagine a reason to pay a NOLA caterer to drive this far. Like, even if it's your BFF's catering company, it still makes no sense.

Geez I was complaining about paying delivery fee + time for 20ish miles. Can't imagine 400.

That sounds insane.  Why not just have the wedding in NOLA?

Probably because the guests are local and it's much easier to pay a caterer to travel 400 miles than hope your guests will travel that far!   That said, I would never do it.....but hey, if I had loads of money and a favorite caterer, who knows!  It's all relative.

This would be my guess as well. I know it's not the same, but my hair dresser talks about traveling for weddings because a favorite client is getting married elsewhere. Photographers travel all the time as well.

Obviously neither are on par with hiring a caterer to travel but if you want it and can afford it and your guests are hosting properly, whatever.

My first thought was along falsara's lines but it is probably easier to pay a caterer to come here than it is to coordinate a whole wedding from 400 miles away and then hope everyone came.

But it was just absolutely unbelievable to me that someone would have a caterer from that far.

FI is working until 6ish tonight. Hopefully he will be able to report back with more info; the caterer is using his kitchen, I think.

  • Maybe its a couple with money (or parental money) that have a favorite caterer and can afford to have this luxury. If I was a millionare (multi-mil) I would pay to have Juan Luis Guerra sing at our reception and fly out a tip top photog/video to cover our wedding. But hey a girl can dream.

  • So... They also brought in a nine-piece band from Atlanta. Headcount is apparently "a few hundred".

They're having oyster shots and sushi-grade ahi tuna among other things.

    And a mashed potato bar.

I think this is my dream menu.

That seems like so much extra money.  I guess if you like it and you got the cash though.

FWIW my caterer drove 200 miles. Smaller wedding, no mashed potato bar- but it was SO worth the travel costs to have someone our family knew well and trusted implicitly taking care of our wedding day. Obviously we all have different priorities for costs, but getting food I KNEW was going to be wonderful instead of worrying about using someone I didn't know was a big deal to me.

To the OP: with a jazz band from Hotlanta and catering from New Orleans, this sounds like a party I might pay to crash. o.O
  • Yeah, it seems like so much more expense to me. I am, however, marrying one of my caterer's sous chefs so I'm not too worried ;)

It is definitely a party I would pay to crash. And - if I'm not mistaken - it's an ex's buddy either getting married or throwing a HUGE AHR. I'm not sure which. I'm not sure HOW I got left off this guest list! I know the guy!

...well. I met him. Once. Hahahah.
