Flat place cards - problem?

I ordered my place cards through VistaPrint, and got them in recently. I took them out today to start labeling each guest/table, and realized that they're flat - they don't stand up on their own, and I wasn't planning on buying little stands for each one (too much money). Is this even an issue? I'm worried that having all the place cards laying flat on the table might make it harder for guests to read them. Should I go to Michaels or Hobby Lobby and just get new ones that actually prop up on their own, or am I making a big deal over nothing?

I've never actually seen place cards that weren't flat.  This does strike me as no big deal.

I'd save your money for something else.

I don't think that it's exponentially more difficult to read a flat card versus a propped up card. No big deal imo.

depending on the depth of the table it can actually be an issue for the cards in the back.  You have to lean over the table in order to read the cards.  Even more-so for those in the back.

I do not think it's ideal, but not a huge deal either.

You could do something like these:

notice with the above the cards only a few rows deep to make it easier for people to see.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

That last photo looks really nice.

IMO lying flat makes the place cards easier to read; I have to duck a bit to read things that are vertical but well below eye level. For the escort cards, lyndausvi's suggestions are great.

I thought place cards were, like, on the place setting?

I dunno, I didn't use these are my wedding, and I don't think that I've been to a wedding that had them.

At a small event that might be true, but at a larger one, it helps to have them on a table or stand outside the reception area so guests can pick them up on the way in.

Escort cards =/= place cards. Place cards are at the place setting. Escort cards are near the entrance to help you find your place with its place card.

    This is what I thought.

    But again, 0 experience.

I've watched David Tutera lecture about it because I am a Netflix addict. I've never actually been to a wedding that used place cards, let alone escort cards. In fact, I'm trying to think of
any formal dinner that I was in an assigned seat, and I just can't.

I recently went to a wedding where they had a poster-ish thing with tables listed and names listed below them at the front of the reception (ie Table 1: John Doe, Jane Doe, Martha Washington, George Washington, etc.) so you knew what table to go to, and then each table had individual place cards on it as well. However, instead of having to look at 10 tables to find your place card, you knew which table to go through and went from there.

At my wedding, we are having a similar poster with the tables listed but no specific seats for people.
