Gotta pull the damn trigger

I'm being a scaredy cat. I need to purchase plane tickets. For all that I've flown a lot, I'm suddenly terrified of dying in a plane accident and can't seem to click the buy button. The horrible incidents in the past year have messed with me, evidently.

So what do you have to pull the trigger on that you are avoiding doing? Finalizing the guest list? Deciding which color to paint the nursery? Scheduling time to run necessary but annoying errands? Choosing an afternoon snack?

  • Deciding if I am taking a new job or staying where I am. I really need to make a decision soon!

  • Good luck with that! Yeah, that's a big one.

  • So I don't know if you were around for this, but several months ago I posted a thread about how it was past time to buy our plane tickets for our HM but I couldn't do it cuz I'm terrified of flying. As usual, the knotties helped a ton, I bought the tickets, and here I am post-HM safe and sound!

Another thing that helped a ton was an article I found about plane incidents. There is one incident for every 4 million flights. And "incident" can be a minor thing, like the oxygen masks accidentally coming down for no reason. Doesn't even necessarily mean anything life-threatening happened. So this means you have a one in 4 million chance of anything going wrong. 4 million times, planes will take off, fly, and land safely with no incident. Just think about that.  If all else fails, Xanax.

The thing I'm procrastinating on: Calling the county clerks office to figure out how to get a replacement marriage license because we lost ours and I need to start the name-change process. Boo!

  • I've been in my new apartment for a month and still have boxes I need to unpack. I really should do that this weekend. My mom coming for a visit will probably actually make that happen, if she weren't coming they would sit there for another month.

Officially launching my own business. I have had the "coming soon" landing page up for, like, 2 months now and the website is pretty much finalized behind it. I just can't do it.

  • @Novella1186, Thanks, that does help. And I hope all goes well with that license--sounds awful!

@redoryx, Awesome! Go you! I can imagine all the trepidation about making it go live. That takes a lot of guts and passion. Good luck biting the bullet.

  • I need to reserve our hotel room blocks.  I'm not sure why I'm procrastinating on it either.

I get you on the flying thing, and I definitely agree with novella's advice. My FI is a pilot. He flies for a living, which used to terrify me as I, like you, was terrified of flying. Especially with all the recent events in the news, I understand how scary flying seems (I have to avoid any news article related to flying otherwise I would drive myself nuts with worry about FI). It definitely helps to understand the probability of something happening. Think of how many flights there are every day, the chance of something happening is minuscule, I believe you actually have more chance of being struck by lightning.

That being said, I highly recommend creating yourself a calming routine before you head out on a flight. Download some happy songs, grab your favorite book. Arrive to the airport early so you aren't rushed and flustered. Once you're on the plane, get comfortable, and zone out as much as possible. Try and think you're sitting at home reading your book. Have a glass of wine/liquor. If you're really worked up to it you can always get a low dosage of anxiety meds to mellow you out ahead of time.

  • I have a severe and inexplicable dread about calling people I don't know well on the phone. This means that every single wedding "to do" that involved a phone call became extraordinarily angst-inducing. Vendors with good websites and who readily answer email were always preferred. Right now I really need to call my officiant to finalize our ceremony program and I've been putting it off for days...
  • Think of it this way: If you die in a plane crash at least it's a pretty cool way to go and also you'll most likely be pretty happy when you are on a plane.

  • Taking a leap of faith into a new job (hopefully) soon. I've been loving the easiness and perks of my job but hating everything else about it for wayyy too long. I'm a little afraid of starting something challenging, even though I know I'll be glad I did in the long run.

I'm the same way... I procrastinate on phone calls for as long as possible.  I have no idea why I dread it so much. It's even a billion times worse when it's for something I really don't want to deal with.

Currently, my "pull the trigger" item (related to the dread of making phone calls) is that 6 years ago I got laid off from work and had a credit card that went unpaid.  They filed a judgment on it, but I had no money and didn't want to deal with it, so I just ignored it.  Now, I am finally getting financially stable again and DH and I would like to start looking to buy a home. Well, I can't get a mortgage with a judgment on my credit report. So, now I have to call this old creditor and figure out what I can do to resolve this.  I'm dreading making that call, but it won't resolve itself, so it's something I have to do.

  • I ordered my wedding shoes online a month ago and they're too big. I got them for 20% off so I keep hoping I'll catch the sale again since in going to be out the return shipping. I ordered a 7.5
I finally went to David's Bridal today and walked around in both a 7 and a 6.5 for 30 minutes and I still can't decide which! The 7 slips off my heel and the 6.5 is tight in the toe box.
So I left with nothing, but I'm planning to stop at another DB 1.5 hrs away... I guess to hem and haw again??

I'd suggest getting the size 7 and get some heel cushion inserts... that's what I had to do with my shoes and it worked great.

Oo, yeah. Definitely go slightly bigger than slightly smaller. In the heat of the wedding day my feet swelled up and the shoes I had were a teensy too tight. I ended up having a black toenail and hobbling around our hikes on the honeymoon.

@princessleia22 and @redheadbride15, good luck with your phone calls.

@blabla89, good luck with the job search.

Thank you so much for the good thoughts! :) I've totally done this before, just being a wimp right now. Doing a calming routine is a good idea. Can't control the plane, but I can control how I feel about it!

Haha, @larrygaga, other than dying peacefully at a ripe old age surrounded by loved ones, I think the only other way I'd want to go out would be at the gentle hands of one of my many tormented lovers, leading to a spontaneous month of national mourning for my loss as a beloved, celebrated monarch. Oh, I mean--not that I currently have plans for world domination or anything.

Have your fiance buy (or click "buy") for you.

Do you drink? I really really hate flying. I have a perscription for xanax in general but use it mostly for flying. I only take  my perscribed dosage but I still get panicky and usually throw up. I know you're not supposed to drink on it but I do it anyways. The way I see it is I'm not abusing it, doing it regularulary or anything like that.  Not great for my liver long term but it helps me from being miserbale the days leading up to flying. Just my $0.02.

  • Gah.. I'm planning on starting a diet for pre conception... I'm healthy but would like to be lighter before I have another being growing in me... I keep saying I'll do the super clean version on Monday but I can't pull the trigger. I'm eating clean right now but now squeaky clean

I'm in the same boat. I would like to be a little more in shape before we start TTC (which will be another 7 months or so). I just ordered a whole pizza. I blame period cravings on that one.

Ha ha yeah I hear ya! I'm sitting here getting a lil drunk and planning on ordering pizza for H and I soon. Aannndd I made the best brownies in the world.. Only half are for us though so surely that doesn't count, right?
  • Also if any one wants the recipe here it is ..hmm. Seems like I only post recipes while liquored

That is really close to the brownie recipe I use. One year for my birthday, I made them in round pans, stacked them up with peanut butter frosting between, and frosted them with ganache. #whyimfat

Oh yeah, and procrastination. That'd be actually calling any of the potential catering places for my reception. I have phone anxiety, too, so I'm operating mostly on email so far, and a lot of restaurants have really terrible broken websites. Also, I want to stab their overpriced menus with a fork. You can't charge $20 for fish and chips in a dive bar just because it's within ten miles of the ocean.
