Outside Wedding... Unity Candle

I have my heart set on lighting the unity candle during our wedding ceremony but it is an outside wedding... is this a bad idea? I don't really care for the sand candles, but I don't want to light them and then they go out. I feel like that would be a bad omen...

  • We had a unity candle at our outdoor wedding and didn't have any trouble.

  • We did floating memorial candles in cylinder vases. That way, the vase protected the candle from the wind, but it light up the vase really nicely. We used vellum to print the names of our loved ones who were passed, so you could do something similar but maybe include a favorite poem or parts of your vows, or just a pretty design to spruce up the vases.

I was a MOH in a wedding where they just had a unity candle and it took forever to finally light it and then it was only lit for about 30 seconds before the wind blew it out and the B&G gave up.  I would suggest putting it in a vase of some sort to help protect it.  If you want an detailed unity candle you could always use a clear vase so everyone still gets to see all the details :)
