Another book/audiobook discussion!

Hello Knoties/World! :-)

So a while back I posted about listening to audio books on my commutes. Everyone had great books to recommend and I was able to find a lot of them on my local library website. I've listened to "Serial" podcast (working on getting "This American Life" because "Serial" was enrapturing!) I have listened to "The Promise of Stardust" (this book was pretty good - it addressed the topic of fraternal abortion - would that be the right description?, and the right to life for both a mother and a fetus). There are several books that have captured my attention as well.

I am now listening to "The Help". I tried to get "12 years a Slave" but unfortunately they did not have it in audio format at the library. I did get to see the movie and it was soul wrenching. I am really enjoying "The Help." When I say enjoying I don't mean "hey I like racism and slavery and white power" and crap like that. The book is very well written and the voice actresses really capture the emotions of the characters. It also really puts into perspective what white privilege is.

Are there other books you would recommend similar to "The Help" and "12 years a Slave"? I have a trip to Scotland coming up and I'd like to have some more books to listen to on the way there.

Thanks!

  • Not similar to those, but I'm listening to Sybil Exposed. It's really fasinaing, especially if you've read Sybil.

  • Also, 12 Years was heart renching. We watched the movie and my friend had to hold me while I sobbed.

I had to be very quiet because if I didn't I wouldn't have reacted well and raged. I hate that people thought they could treat other people that way in the past. What's worse is I hate even more is that it still happens today.

I've never heard of "Sybil". Whose the author? I'll check it out.

'Exposed' is by Debbie Nathan. The original is about this woman who suffered from multiple personalities. It came out as not 100% true.

  • Not sure if this ever came up in other audio book discussions, but the Harry Potter series is excellent on audio.

  • I lovelovelove listening to This American Life in the car. when I first downloaded the app, I started all the way back at the beginning of the podcasts and made my way up to present a few months ago. They seem to have slowed down on releasing new content (lots of repeats, I've found), and every once in a while I stumble upon one that is a little dryer and doesn't peak my interest, but I'd say 90% of them are fabulous and will keep you occupied for a longgg time!

I'm very excited for the new season of Serial in the fall!

I'm currently listening to Game of Thrones. It's not exactly similar, but I think you might enjoy The Rapture of Canaan. Similar themes and writing style, though it focuses on religious zeal rather than racism.

  • Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series is terrific. Lots of Scots history, and early American history in the later books.

  • I think this one is The Book of Negros, which I was just about to recommend.  (Different title in the US I think). Fantastic book, and they just did a 6 part (I think) miniseries on it too.

Yep, they had to change the name because the publishers didn't think it would go over well in the American market.

It's a really good book. I've got the mini-series on hold at the library but I might just try and watch it off the CBC site.

     There's a mini series?
    I must see this.
And yep, I thought it was an excellent read.
  • @ohannabelle it ran on CBC, our national TV network back in the spring.  I'm not sure how you can access it in the US though, but it should be available somehow.  And it's under "The Book of Negros", not the American title.

Bought it from ITunes, thank you. I am always running out of good TV. I love a good mini series.

I recommended The Help on that thread, isn't it fantastic?

I just listened to the first book of the Harry Dresden series (Storm Front, I think, is the name).  It wasn't my favorite, primarily because the actor reading the story has a quiet, relatively mellow voice.  But when he was doing the voice for Bob (the spirit who lives in a skull) he gave Bob a British accent, and the first time I heard it I thought "Hey, that sounds like Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer!"  And guess what?  The actor reading the story IS the actor who played Spike, James Marsters.  It made listening to the rest of the story more fun!

This is one of FI's favourite series. They also made a television show from the books, The Dresden Files.

I don't think I can listen to it because I will rage with my Spike hatred. It's a shame because I enjoyed the Dresden Files on tv.

Oh I know, I've read the books several times and own a digital copy of the series (the few episodes there are...).  I have a weird quirk I have where I can't stand to listen to audiobooks unless I've actually read the book and it's a favorite.  I get really frustrated otherwise at how slow they are reading.  This way I know what's going to happen and can enjoy the journey.  It took some trial and error to figure out what kinds of audiobooks don't drive me nuts.  :p
