I was fired for...

Some of them are pretty funny.

I've never been fired.  DH was fired.   Officially it was for creating a hostile work environment.  Which is hilarious because 80% of this staff quit due to DH's firing.  Some of the followed him here.

You see DH had cut the #2 position for the next year (as did most of the other resorts in the company).    The #2 found out.   #2 and the GM (both married) were sleeping with the same hourly employee.

#2 blackmailed the GM to have DH fired without going through normal company procedures.   LA is a right to work state.  Which means they can fire you for wearing the wrong color shirt.

6 weeks after firing DH the GM was fired for having an affair with the hourly employee.  His wife also divorced him.

#2 applied for DH's job and was rejected.  A few months later he was laid off due to his position being eliminated.   His wife also divorced him.  He could not find a job in the field and last we heard he was working in another field  for less money.

DH found a new job within 2 months.   Then a year later he got the amazing job he is at now.  The pay is much better, benefits amazing and his quality of live is so much better then the job he was fired from.

Karma's a bitch I tell you.

So have you every been fired?  Was it for something stupid?

Re: I was fired for...

  • I was fired from Target for having a resting bitch face and being pre-diabetic. Seriously, that was the reason. They said my unwelcoming facial expressions intimidated my coworkers (not true, I was friendly with everyone) and I seemed to have an attitude because I turned down sodas and ice cream they would sometimes provide for us when they kept us 4 hours after closing. I always said no thank you, but the simple act of saying no was considered uncooperative.

    Seriously?  That is crazy.

  • I forgot that one.  That is my favorite.

  • I wasn't fired exactly from one lifeguarding job, but not put back on the schedule.  I tried to book off my 2 friends wedding date 6 months in advance when we gave our new schedules.  I introduced them and was helping hold the chuppa in their ceremony.  I was scheduled to work.  I called the entire staff twice to find someone to cover but no one could.  I told my immediate bosses numerous times that I wasn't coming in (months before, 2 week, week, days and the day before).  I checked after and then only had 30 min where they had enough to cover but no extras cos some people stayed late/came in early/etc.  They all said it was no problem and everything was good

I was hauled in to the Head boss's office about 6 months later cos they had to do a report on why I hadn't shown up.  I explained all of the above.  They said I should have told them (which I pointed out that I did), that I should have looked for someone to cover (which I did) and that they didn't book off from schedules (which is bullshit).  They realized I did everything I could have to avoid this and were not happy so I wasn't put back on the schedule.  Not really a big deal since it wasn't well run and if you didn't live in the town you weren't a favourite and got picked on like this.

  • I was fired from an organist job because the new minister decided (on his own) that he wanted new style Christian praise music instead of the traditional music I had been providing for almost ten years.  He lied to the congregation and told them that I had left by my own choice.  Half the congregation quit that church.  I had a new and better job within two weeks.

  • "A half empty glass is an empty glass and you just don't seem to want to fill them up. We're gonna have to let you go."

    Best job ever, really.
  • I've never been fired.

But when I was college, I filled in for a catering company when they were catering this really big, black tie wedding. I had never been a server before. Long story short, someone accidentally bumped into me and I dropped a big tray of champagne with raspberries right in the middle of a group of people. There was broken glass all over the floor and champagne plus raspberry stains all over their clothes. I felt AWFUL. Surprisingly everyone was really gracious about it.

The catering company never called me back for another gig.

  • During the summers I worked a seasonal job at a pizza place in a beach town.  I was the general manager and basically first in command after the owners.  In September, when it starts dying down for the year, I always take a weekend off of work.  So I put in for my weekend.  It turns out every other person that stayed on in September also asked for that weekend off.  I was 21 and the weekend I wanted off was so I could go drinking at the Irish Festival a few towns over on the same island.

So one morning, the boss called me and woke me up he called so early.  I was really groggy and he asked me if I could work, I said no, and he asked why.  I actually said, "So I can go down to the Irish Festival and get drunk."  He kinda didn't like that answer and I wasn't put on the schedule for the rest of the year.  About 2 weeks later, I go down there to talk to him at closing and I actually asked him for my summer bonus!  It usually paid for the fall semester's books, so I thought it was a good idea!  He was incredulous and said I had a lot of guts coming down and asking for my bonus!  He didn't give it to me.

But he did hire me back next year doing exactly what I did before.  I even worked weekends there a few summers after I graduated and found full time work.  He really is an awesome guy!  I still see him every summer at his current place.  And he usually gives us a free round of beer or a comped meal.  So neither of us has any hard feelings over that incident!  He even came to my wedding!

  • Some of you might be surprised to learn...I have never been fired.
  • I've never been fired, but at one job I quit because I knew I was going to get fired.

I worked at this small family run company, doing odd admin esque type jobs. Inventory mainly, a bit of payroll etc.

Then they decided that they needed to get their 'over due' accounts receivable list in check so they pulled a list of clients with outstanding invoices and gave it to me. And expected me to phone these people at 8am, every day, until we received their money. I refused. Said it was harassment. I thought I handled it diplomatically saying that I believed that it would be more beneficial to go through the phone list once a week, at a more decent hour of 11am. If a client said a cheque was in the mail then I would follow up with them several days later to confirm. I told them that I thought this was a better way to retain client relations with them so that we could do work for them in the future.

It didn't go over well. they had this contract HR lady and the running thing at the company was that if this lady showed up on a Wednesday at 4, then someone was getting fired. (I worked there 5 months and saw 6 people fired). So I got a sit down chat with this lady on a friday. She basically belittled me and told me that I wasn't educated or smart enough to have an opinion on how things ran, that I was simply there to do as I was told. And that basically I had a week to figure out  'my place' or else basically.

    So I quit.

    Why would that surprise me?

I've never assumed you would be the kind of worker that would get fired.   And even if you did, people get fired for some pretty stupid stuff.    Being fired from a job does not automatically mean you are a bad person or worker.  Some jobs do not work out.  Some bosses are assholes.  Some workers are bad and/or assholes. Some people take on jobs they are not suited to do.

  • Not technically.  When I was in design school, I got a temp job for an architect doing AutoCAD drawings and just being his assistant in general.  It was to cover someone's maternity leave.  He had mentioned at the beginning that if things went well, he'd keep me on even after she came back.  Well, I guess it didn't go well because he handed me my last check one day out of the blue, and apologized and said it was only a temporary thing.  I was mostly upset because he was paying me $17/hour when most other similar jobs were in the $10-12/hour range.  He himself was a bit crazy, and he wouldn't let me listen to music, even quietly or with headphones, while working.

some of you. Not you directly. Could be anyone who is surprised to learn that. I don't know. Maybe no one is surprised.

I have met people in general who are surprised to learn I haven't ever been fired from a job. Like that surprises them for...I dunno why. Cause I've held a lot of job? Cause I'm a mouthy little fuck? Cause I've worked at some shitty companies that fired people no reason and yet I never got fired from them?
  • And by the way, the staple one, I had a boss like that.  He would flip the fuck out if someone stapled his papers parallel to the top, instead of at a 45 degree angle.  Same boss who also took some papers off the printer, that someone else had printed, and yelled "WHY ARE THESE WARM??"

I worked for him for 6 years.  After I quit I took 2 months off work entirely to recover.

I sort of did? My boss was being really passive aggressive. I politely asked for more hours over summer, as I wasn't in school and wanted to help my mother pay bills. Boss said no can do, so I went and got a second job.

Boss didn't like me splitting my time like that so she gave me 50+ hours a week. I was already working about 20 hours a week at this other job, so I was getting run pretty ragged. I asked for less hours and was refused. I talked with new boss who told me I could be getting 40 hours if I so choose.

Talked to old boss, gave my two weeks. She was pissed at me so instead of just letting me finish out my last two weeks she stopped scheduling me.

    Alright, cool, whatever.

I would think in your industry there can be some sketchy owners.

Plus your industry are generally small business.  In my own experence, mom and pop places tend to be run much differently.   Sometimes it's good.  Sometimes they are not.

I worked for a family that owned a boat.  The guy was so paranoid everyone was out to steal his money. He fired people just because he didn't want them to get to comfortable.

ETA - and I didn't think you were speaking directly to me.  Just saying, it's not something I would find surprising.

The tattoo industry is mostly small business yes. But I've worked in several other industries. Sometimes to make extra money, sometimes because the tattoo industry was slow. Funny thing, when the economy crashes...no one wants to shell out 100s of dollars on ink. Weird.

    boxes?    Not sure  ********************************************8

In the islands everyone worked odd jobs.  At one time I had 4 of the through off season.  It was normal.

My corporate state-side family side-eyed that.  They figured if you were job hoping something was wrong with you.

Yeah, no.  The island had slow times and busy times.   In the high times you worked at 'x' place to make a lot of money.  Then the closed or dropped your hours so you went went somewhere else for a few months.  Or you just filled in at a bar  while their regular guy was off-island for a few weeks or even a month.

It's a completely foreign concept to your 9-5 M-F corporate peeps.

I've never gotten fired but I've got some stories.  When I was 16 I worked as a lifeguard at a pool.  There was an incident that went down and a guard was being evaluated if they had acted appropriately in a situation.  With that, they decided to get out the employee handbooks and give them to employees and have them sign on the spot that they agreed to the handbook.  We never got this at the beginning of the season.  I said I'd take it home and read it and then bring it back the next day.  I didn't want to sign it on the spot because of all the other sketchy shit that was going on.  They FLIPPED and told me if I didn't sign it I was fired.  I left, the town officials (small town and the pool was town run) were notified and imagine that, I wasn't fired.  I did not return after that summer.

Another job I quit.  I was a server and the management was awful (worst job I've ever had).  I quit though because I just didn't really have time for long hour shifts with school.  I did the appropriate thing, put it my 2 weeks so it could end on good terms.  They then scheduled me every day for the next two weeks when I had only been working weekends.  Yeah.... screw that.  Hopefully they had fun with all those open shifts!
  • When I was younger I would 'quit' jobs but just not showing up. And avoiding phone calls/etc. It was terrible haha. I have never been technically fired, although I think one of my T4s said I was fired, but it was one of the situations where I just stopped showing up.

SO was fired once, he had a shitty job (handing out coupons in a grocery store). He would goto the store, leave the coupons in the correct aisle and leave. It took them a while to catch on that he wasn't actually there for the 4 hours or whatever.

  • I have never been fired but I have been laid off, twice. Both internet start up companies in the early 2000's in Silicon Valley. It was was cool to work there though  (maybe a little too cool, since they had trouble getting funding).

I've been close. I used to work at a dairy and not once but twice I did a dumb thing where I accidentally contaminated the milk, so like 2000 gallons had to be dumped out. The second time I called my boss, told him what I did, and offered to come in that afternoon for free to feed calves since the second shift would be behind because of my mistake. He said if it weren't for that, he would've fired me, but he realized someone being that honest and making that offer had to have made an honest mistake but it definitely couldn't happen again. He actually gave me a really good reference after that. But that definitely wasn't the job for me. It was very menial and repetitive and it was very easy to space out and think you did something that you didn't, especially if you worked two shifts a day with the first starting at 4 am.

Second I was working for this nutjob of a horse trainer. He'd had the same assistant for years and couldn't handle that I didn't immediately know how he liked things done when I came on. He called me a wuss for using a mounting block (which was encouraged everywhere else I worked since it saves the horse's back, and why would I make things more difficult on myself when I don't have to?). He screamed at me when I asked where the spurs when packing for our second show. He screamed at me for not being able to reach into the trailer to untie a horse, then realized he couldn't do it either. He screamed at me for not longeing a horse to his liking- that was when I finally got frustrated enough to cry but I'm not sure if he noticed since I was wearing sunglasses, and that was right in front of a client and a child. He got pissed when he told me to retie a water bucket and it didn't look nice- it was a bucket, a milk crate, and baling twine, so I'm not sure what sort of pinterest crap I should've pulled out my ass to make that look nice. Also would have screamed at me for putting the wrong blanket on a horse but we were at a show so he muttered under his breath about how unacceptable it was instead. If I listened to music or talked to his daughter while cleaning stalls, I was clearly fucking around.

So I told them the night before a show that I was giving them my two weeks notice. He said good, they were going to fire me anyway. Sure. I left to go take care of my horse and they called me and said they'd just go to the show themselves and they wanted me gone by the end of the weekend. The stars aligned and I managed to get transport for my horse out of there with 2 days left on a valid health certificate and I loaded up my truck and I was gone, leaving the trailer I was living in cleaner than how I'd found it.

But yes, I was a terrible employee. Next boss could not believe how responsible and hardworking and focused I was, but yes I was just the worst ever.

  • I got fired last June. I did screw up once but the reasons they gave were ridiculous and just to keep me from getting unemployment.
  • When I worked at Arby's back in the day, my shift manager stole $50 out of my drawer ( I was on break and she was the only one on the register during that time) and blamed it on me. The weeks before that happened, drawers kept coming up short...$10 or $20 missing...I guess she grew some bigger balls and went for $50. That was fine though, I had a 2nd job that paid way more than Arby's did.

  • I have never been fired or laid off. H was laid off, but it was super sketchy and the boss was an utter jerk.

So H took this job at a small company as one of three employees, and the boss said there would be plenty of work. Fast forward about three months (to approx. a 1.5 months before our wedding! Which royally screwed up life in terms of finances) and the boss says, oh, I thought we'd have more work than we did, so you're laid off.

H hunts around and finds another job pretty quickly. Fortunately, there are a fair amount of jobs in his industry.

Anyway, he knew a lot of guys in the industry and one of them mentioned about this new person working over at his old job! Turns out, the boss laid off H (the newest employee) so he could hire a cheaper employee. Basically, my H's job requires a certification. H got it at a tech college in about 1.5 years. The other way you can get the cert. is work for three or four years under someone who already has the cert. So H was laid off so the boss could hire a kid without the cert. and pay him half the wages or less while he learned and did all the little stuff. Part of the reason the boss did it was because he was pressured by the dad of the kid who was one of his clients. It was a super jerk move.
