Recommend your washer/dryer

Our washer just took a shit today.  It's old and we're not fixing it.

Therefore, I'm in need of HE top loading washer recs.  Dryers too.  We'll be replacing the set.

I'm looking at Whirlpool Cabrio and Maytag.  Anyone have those?  I'm open to pretty much anything.

Our set is low-end and we've had them forever.  We were going to replace when we moved, but decided to hold off until one broke.  So here we are.

Re: Recommend your washer/dryer

  • no recs other than yay for he top loaders.

please, Lord, to thee i pray: strike down my front loaders. smite them with all Thy heavenly might.

  • Mr. Conn said he would divorce me if I insisted on a front loader.

Also, everyone I've ever known who has them has had major issues/repairs and/or ended up replacing them all together.

The only thing I hate about my front load is leaving the door open so it doesn't get moldy.  Other than cleaning the trap we haven't had much issue in 9 years (knock on wood).

If I had to get a new set it would be top load though.

  • I'm waiting for my front loader to die too, I hate it and have had tons of issues.  I'll be watching this for recs, hoping I'll need them soon too.
  • Yeah I hate my front loader. I have a Maytag and I'm not super impressed with it. We've had it over 5 years and I feel like it doesn't do the greatest job any more. Plus it will randomly leak and we figured out its because this one area gets clogged. So periodically, DH has to take it apart to clean the clog.

I have been praying fr my dryer to die since we moved into this house.
The dryer is literally older than I am and keeps effing working.

Our washer is a new-ish whirlpool, and it's OK--not ecstatically wonderful, not awful, just meh.  But it's been working for like 7 years, so, no major complaints.
  • Y'all are scaring me.  Was it not this very board who recommended the LG front loaders last summer?  (Which I love, no issues yet, knock on wood.)

Anyhoo, to your original question, mrs.conn, I have no experience with LG toploaders specifically (see above), but our current pair is LG and we are delighted with them.
  • I don't know about washer/dryers, but we love our LG fridge and TVs.

Mr. Heff was a die-hard Sony loyalist for all consumer electronics, until we got an LG because it was "only" for our bedroom, and Consumer Reports said nice things about it.  Now he loves the LG better than the big ol' Sony in the family room.  So another vote for LG if anyone is shopping for TVs.
  • We have had an LG front loader for 10 years. The only time we had a problem was once in the first 2 years, the computer went haywire. We just had to drain the washer (there's a little spigot at the bottom) and reset the computer. Yes, the rubber ring sometimes starts to get moldy, but you just have to wipe it out.
  • I can tell you not to get this one: clicky.  We bought this model and matching dryer when we moved into our house.  The very first load, the clothes were still soaking wet.  This particular HE washer needs to be loaded a very certain way, which wasn't even specified in our directions for the washer.  H was googling for solutions when he found that this washer needs to be loaded a certain way. Even though we have the loading figured out, sometimes it will still leave the clothes soaking wet because it is off balance.

I had read reviews and was all set to get a pair of Maytags, but when we went in store, I saw the Whirlpool set for about $200 cheaper.  I unfortunately made the impulse decision to save money without reading reviews.

We bought an LG for our living room because DH had them at his previous job in the trucker breakroom (he worked the dock office) and they were on 24/7/365 for 5+ years without needing to be replaced. I think we have Samsungs for bedrooms (ours and the kiddos).  They are also good TV's.  They get far less use than our living room TV.
  • I'm a BIG fan of Speed Queen - they're American Made in Wisconsin and built to last.  Ours cleans better than the Maytag (yes, we own two washers/dryers) any day of the week plus it's Stainless.  They also have "Hot" settings available on some of their lines which is really difficult to come by.  Parts are also pretty easy to come by as well.

Our Kenmore Commercial line dryer is also great.  It was a little spendy, but it's nice to have the extra dryer space to get clothes dryer quite a bit quicker.  The only drawback is while my 3-yo can figure the settings out (this thing has settings for just about every kind of fabric and you can set the dryness level, re-fluff if you need it), my husband, can't figure the thing out for anything...

Sony's diskreaders are, by and large, crap.
I told the Mr. that, but he still insisted that was what he wanted and it wasn't a problem on the last DVD player...but, guess what?  still crap.

That's all the useful info I have.
