Great Gatsby Themed Weddings...

So I know how much we all LOVE this ever-popular wedding theme so I thought I'd share a funny story my dad told me recently.

My dad was one time invited to a Great Gatsby themed party (not wedding, thankfully). Everyone else took this to mean what people always mean by it- dress up in fancy 1920s style clothes with bowties and pearls. Everyone else at the party was decked out in suits and flapper dresses. My dad showed up in a ratty car mechanic's uniform with a water gun, and proceeded to spend the party going around shooting all the guys in suits.

I really appreciated the creative approach he took to this party theme, and advise those invited to Great Gatsby themed weddings to borrow his idea.

I love this! My father would have done this too, or at least encouraged one of us to dress with something blood splattered :)
  • I'm with @sarahufl and want to know if people understood it.

I might not have if I hadn't seen the movie when it came out. I had read it in high school, but I know I didn't really like it and subsequently didn't pay much attention to the story.

"well, I don't want to reveal my theme in case my cousin in on weddit, but let's just say it is related to a very popular movie that came out two years ago"

    Insidious: Chapter 2????
    Warm Bodies??
    This Is the End??

I know she's being coy (and paranoid??) but thinking about other movies that came out that year that could be the theme is making me giggle today.

Also they would probably be better themes than Great Gatsby because when you say "My wedding is Gatsby themed!!!" what I hear is "I never read that book!!!!"

Seriously, nothing ends well for any couple in that book. Who are you trying to emulate with that wedding theme. Daisy and Gatsby? One of them is cheating on their spouse and the other is murdered at the end.

Or maybe Jordan and Nick? They don't end up together. In fact, if I remember the book correctly, they never really are together. Just some flirting and a game of golf.

Daisy and Tom? They're in a miserable loveless marriage where they cheat on each other.

Tom and his mistress? Both of them are cheating on their spouses and one of them dies at the end.

    How romantic.

No, what I hear is "I know nothing about Art History or Design."

Because what they all actually want is the visual, stylistic theme of the novel, which is Art Deco.  And that's fine.

No one wants a theme directly related to the storyline. . . come on guys, you all know this by now.

I have no idea... I like to imagine in my mind that they were just bewildered as he wandered around shooting people.

I would have applauded if I had been a guest there.
