Unexpected Opportunities! (and a little AW)

edited June 2015 in Chit Chat
I'm very excited in that I've been unexpectedly nominated to serve on the board of directors at Dress For Success, a non-profit organization that, according to its mission statement, "promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life".

The opportunity came out of nowhere through a connection I'm just beginning a friendship with and I was asked to provide my CV within 30 minutes yesterday.  I hadn't updated it in 6 years so I worked furiously & got it in.  A quorum will be held next month to vote.  I'm so excited!  I've never been on a board before and I think the organization is fantastic.  I hope to be accepted as a board member!

What are some unexpected and exciting opportunities any of you have gotten recently or in the past, personal and/or professional?

  • That's really great!!

I got involved with the junior board of a music school for underprivileged kids. Unfortunately, I learned I'd rather be doing grunt work of volunteering than planning events to raise money or trying to solicit people for donations. So, I'm a "sustaining" board member which means I'm not obligated to go to meetings or anything, but they keep me in the loop when grunt work is needed.

I also secured a position for the peer review commission of my institution and recently got my first assignment for next year. I'm excited for that!

Congratulations!  That's awesome.  I'm with you, I prefer the boots on the ground volunteering but I do love organizing fund-raising events, networking, and coming up with business plans.  I have no idea what the role will entail just yet but am excited for the nomination.
  • That's awesome, @onefootinthebayou!!!

I just successfully made a career change after a big leap of faith. I accepted my new job offer today!!!

I'm looking for volunteer opportunities in my new city now. I love the boots-on-the-ground type of volunteering, too.

    I love that org! Congrats
  • That sounds awesome!!

A position just opened up in my board, staying at my school half time and working the other half organizing Jr high Athletics for the entire board (while working out of my current school).  So I'm putting together my leadership package this weekend as it closes Monday.  So much for time off.
