How Often Do You Get A Cold?

edited June 2015 in Chit Chat
Not the flu, not a stomach bug- a good old fashioned stuff nose, sore throat, headache-y cold.

I feel one coming on right now and I feel like I've had more than my fair share lately, so I'm curious.

Re: How Often Do You Get A Cold?

  • I tend to go through spurts, which probably just means the cold never fully went away in the first place!

I put 5 or more; I have the world's worst immune system. Ie even if someone next to me on the subway is coughing, I'll most likely come down with something a few days later.

The worst was this time BF had friends staying with him (before we were living together), and one of them came down with some 24 hr vomiting stomach bug. I spent literally 2 minutes in his apartment to get something and sure enough the next day I was out for the count for 2 days, nonstop vomiting! I've learned my lesson to steer clear of anyone I know to be sick!

ETA just realized you said not the flu. I would say for colds/sore throat/etc around 4 times/yr/

  • I get them more in the winter.  But I saw an ear/nose/throat specialist for voice problems a month or so ago and he gave me a prescription for liquid Pulmicort.  I mix it with a squeeze bottle netti pot (and those crystals) and use it daily.  He said I'll never get a cold again.  So far so good, but I usually don't get sick in the summer either

  • When I was teaching Elementary school music, I got about 4 per year.  Now I seldom get even one.

I normal 1-2 times a year but in the last 12 months I think I've had 5, 2 of which were really bad.  No idea what caused the change

  • I think part of that depends on exposure. When I'm around kids, I tend to catch more stuff. But I'm not normally around kids, and I don't take public transit, and I get really bad anxiety in crowds so I try to avoid crowded places.

I only got sick once last year, and I caught it from H, who caught it from a lady in his office. Usually I don't get sick when H does and I don't catch the stuff that goes around my office, so go figure.

  • I used to get colds about 3-4 times a year. but in the past few years, I MAYBE get one a year, if that.

  • I haven't been sick in like three freaking years but I'm sick now. My throat is killing me and I have this pitiful dry cough that hurts so bad. Who gets sick in freaking June?

  • All the damn time! But I have an immune deficiency. I'm sick right now in fact. It doesn't help that I work with kids either. I saw a natural "doctor" last month who hooked me up to a biofeedback machine and then told me to drink a litter of ionic silver over the next month. I did but I'm still sick.

  • I rarely get sick. When I do its because someone came to work hacking up a lung (assholes - we're allowed to work from home and have unlimited sick time) and germed up the office.

Once in a blue moon, I'll get an URI as a downstream effect of bad allergies.

We have the same thing here, so I'm always astounded (and PISSED) when people come to work coughing and hacking, saying they feel like shit and probably caught whatever horrible contagious thing from whoever (Like, Oh I bet I got that horrible Strep throat that's been going around my kids school!) Um... STAY THE FUCK HOME!!!

H gets sick at least 3 or 4 times a year because the jerks in his office constantly come in knowing how sick they are. Unlimited sick time is given for a reason.

  • What a coincidence this thread is... H is super sick. Chest infection, on anti-biotics and can't work for about a week. It started as a cold.

I have a sore throat from hell. :)
  • I didn't used to get colds, but in the last couple of years every time I do they become sinus infections.  It seems to be maybe twice a year- one towards the beginning of the school year, and one mid-winter.  Other than that I don't really get sick- no flu or strep even working with the kiddos.
  • Maybe once a year if that. But I tend to get those lingering head colds that take forever to fully go away. Bleh.

  • 1-2 times a year, usually one in the spring and one in the fall, but they tend to linger for a week or two.

That being said I never get the flu. In the last 6 years I've probably had the flu once.

  • Lately it's been once every other year.  Used to be yearly, not sure why they're less frequent, but no complaints here!  2014 was sick-free, so I fully expect one this fall/winter!
