DH and I have been invited to a casual BBQ tonight at our neighbor's house.  What should I take?  It needs to be something I can get ready-made or put together very quickly, because we're suppose to go over right after work.

We were going to take the box of cream puffs DH got the other day, but his friend ate them all last night!!!

No booze please.  We usually end up taking wine, and I feel like that is getting old.  (I never thought i'd say that wine is getting old, but that's probably because i'm pregnant and can't drink it, so I am being bratty!!!)

ETA: to eat at the BBQ, not as a gift.

are you talking about a contribution to the meal or as a gift?  As a contribution I usually ask if I can bring anything or say should I bring a side or a dessert so I know I'm not bringing dessert if 10 other people do.

  • If you are wanting to take food as a contribution to the BBQ, you could always bring some dip and chips. My go to is always deviled eggs, potato salad, or chicken salad puffs.

If it is meant to be a gift, flowers would be nice.

my bad, a food contribution!  I guess that would have been helpful info.  I LOVE deviled eggs. . . . I wish I would have time to make them before the party!

What are chicken salad puffs? I am intrigued.

OP, if you want to take food to contribute, I vote for hummus with slices pitas (or pita chips) and veggie sticks. Hummus is super quick and easy to make, or you can just pick some up at the store.

Could you make them that morning?

They are basically like crescent rolls with chicken salad in them but smaller. I use the same recipe for the breaded part that my MIL uses for cream puffs.

  • What about some baked beans? You can get the canned kind and spice them up with some bacon, sauteed onions and garlic, and some seasoning.

Hummus + pita chips and a taco dip are my favs
  • Ice cream cake or a fruit salad.
  • Did you ask the hosts?

I ask because I'm one of those people who gets annoyed when people just shows up with random foods to be consumed during my party.   I spend time planning out the perfect meal and do not like to figure out how to add another dish I didn't ask for.

Did they ask you to bring something?  How do you know they do not already have hummus?

When in doubt I bring a hostess gift.   Booze, flowers, something like that.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

That's a really good point. I get annoyed too.

For example, we recently invited friends over for dinner with the intent of hosting them for dinner. I spent a lot of time and effort planning the meal. As an appetizer/side, I bought a baguette and some pricey specialty cheeses. The wife showed up with a baguette and some different cheeses. Although she meant well, it annoyed me.

I completely understand, but they do like and appreciate when we bring something.  It's a casual BBQ.  They'll have cheese and crackers, burgers and dogs, maybe sausage, baked beans or potato salad. . . . it's pretty much what we always have at these get-togethers.

With that being said. . . she'll always say we don't have to bring anything and I feel bad showing up empty handed.
  • Ok here's my serious answer. I'd go with fruit or dessert. Fruit often seems to be overlooked (at least in my experience) and you can never have too many dessert options! Maybe something summery...lemon bars, key lime something, strawberry cupcakes?

Well, it's tonight. . . maybe i'll get one of those little fruit trays with the yogurt dip.
  • Strawberry shortcake? Easy, quick, and strawberries are in season.
  • A pasta salad with the Italian dressing?

  • I always support fruit salad.

  • Guac and chips? Guac is my go to quick appetizer.
  • I support either a fruit salad or a full on salad. Easy to make and often overlooked I think at BBQ's where the focus is meat, hard veggies (like the potato salad) and bread.

  • How about chilled watermelon?  You can cut it up into cubes and put it into a bowl or just bring a tray of slices.
