Law Firms Target of Bomber

For those of you who don't know me well, I'm a Legal Assistant. And this may turn into a rant of sorts.

On Friday, a bomb was received at a law firm downtown, exploded and injured the only person in the building at the time. She lost a hand, is in danger of losing the other, and will be in the hospital for a long time.

Since that time, I think there's been 5 other packages - 3 at law firms, one at an automotive business and one at a residence.

Turns out there's a guy that's upset at how his legal dealings are going ,and decided to target any lawyer that has worked on the projects, the judges, the other parties..  everyone. He put the bombs in the mail on June 29 and they started being received on July 3.  Our Law Society has put out a warning to not open anything suspicious and to call 911 if we receive anything.

I feel like I'm over-reacting... but we've acted for people involved. I don't want to be at work today. H and my sister asked me not to go to work, but I feel like if my boss was worried, he'd tell us not to come in, you know?

Re: Law Firms Target of Bomber

  • I have nothing to say other than stay safe and I'll be sending positive thoughts and prayers.

    How scary.

I refuse to let these types of people affect my daily life.  I'm going to be more diligent, more aware of my surroundings, but I'm not going to stop going to work.

You have a better chance of getting hurt or dying driving to work.

How long are you suppose to stop going to work?  Until they catch him?  It took them 18 years to catch the unabomber.    Sure yours is more recent, but I'm not sure it would keep me from work.   Going to keep me from opening up a package though.

How big is your law firm? If I was them I would be bringing in my own security.

    All of this.

These types of people want to terrify others.  They want people to stop working and rearrange their lives around this.  They want the attention and the focus.  Don't give it to them.  Be diligent and alert, but don't let these assholes change the way you live your life because then you are giving them what they want.

  • Oh wow I'm sorry that's going on. That would be really scary. I don't blame you at all from not wanting to be there but at least people are now aware of what's happening and you can be cautious. Stay safe!

  • ... Ya'll are right. I'm being a little ridiculous. We're a small firm - one lawyer, one articling student and 3 assistants. I think it's more just mail packages and we just received a picture of what the packages all have looked like so we're just going to be vigilant.

I guess I just don't understand how this is happening here, you know? I feel like this is something that happens far away.

I do NOT think you are being ridiculous.   These are true and real feelings.    Just because I would still go to work doesn't mean I'm blowing off the very serious situation.  It just means I'm going to be more aware of my surroundings to stay safe, but not change my whole life because of a terrorist.

It's good to be scared and cautious.  It makes you more aware.   But you need a little balance too.

  • They just evacuated the post office, City hall and the law court  building has had a threat as well.  I feel like I'm in an episode of Criminal Minds over here. If only Shemar Moore would come save the day haha

  • Are you in Winnipeg? If so it is good to see they caught the guy. I pray they get any other devices if there are more out there without anyone being hurt.

I am! It's crazy that it's so close to home. Are you around here or did you google lol

They set up a GoFundMe for the injured lawyer, and they've reached over half their goal in these last two days. A lot of people who are donating are lawyers I recognize and I will forever be proud of how quick our law community stood up and are lending a hand.   I've heard rumors that other lawyers from other firms are taking on her clients pro-bono and having the clients pay the fees back to Maria. It's great.
  • No I am in Chicago but my SIL is an attorney in California so I googled to find out where. It is wonderful when people pull together to help others out.
