Cream dress and an ivory suit?

Hi all,

I just got my dress yesterday. It's beautiful, but it's cream and not ivory or white. This wouldn't concern me at all except that my fiance also wants to wear a white suit on our wedding day. I don't want him to be too much whiter than me. What colors of off white do you think would be best, because I also don't want to try to match and end up clashing. Any recommendations? I'm thinking a linen color for him, just so it's a more natural white, but I also don't want him to wrinkle like crazy.

This is my dress. Some of the pictures make it look whiter than it is.

Thanks!

  • First off, your dress is beautiful. I would see if your dress shop can provide you with a swatch in the color of your dress or find some ribbon in the color of your dress. Then go to the store with FI and hold up the fabric different suit options to see which one looks best. I personally don't think it's a big deal for him to know the color of your dress. I had a champagne colored dress which my husband was told about the color, this way he knew why I was rejecting certain color options. Once you see what your color looks like against white, you'll both either love it or realize, need to find him a different color option.

I cannot imagine where your FI would find a white suit, except maybe in a vintage shop.  Shades of John Travolta!  Is he going to pose and point to the ceiling?
Try to talk him into a nice light grey suit.  Your dress is beautiful, and he should complement it, not compete with it.

  • What time of the day is your wedding?  If you are having a morning or early afternoon wedding then your FI could wear a nice tan suit.  But if you are having it later in the day then I second the light grey recommendation.

Sorry but a white suit screams prom and Saturday Night Fever.

  • A white suit? Ugh, why? Ditto the tan suit for morning/afternoon and the light gray for evening.

White suits/tuxes remind me of tacky prom-wear.

  • In 1976, the formal wear companies featured a "Groom's Suit" which was a white tailcoat and white top hat.  It looked ridiculous.
