Just one ring?

I've been thinking about it, and the more I think about it, the more I wonder if having just 1 ring for both my engagement and wedding band is a good idea [for me].

I'm going to be a nurse, so I can't have lots of things in my way, but I also don't want just a plain wedding band. Right now I have a stand-in ring, so when it comes time to get my actual ring, that's when we'll decide.

Any of you ladies have just one ring?

Re: Just one ring?

  • Well, if you are getting another ring, you will have two. You can use one for dressy occasions and another simpler one for work.

I have had my wedding ring and engagemnt ring saudered, so they are like one ring. I also have a simple cobalt band that I use when working out, out on the boat, or other places where a fancy ring doesn't seem appropriate.

  • The ring I have now is a stand in "for now" ring. It isn't my official engagement ring, and once I get my official ring, I probably won't wear it at all.
  • So you are undecided if you just want to use your e-ring as both your e-ring and wedding ring?  You can definitely do that.  There are many brides on here that have done that for a variety of reasons.

Since you are a nurse I would consider whether or not your e-ring will be wearable at work.  If not, then you have to consider if going without a ring at work is okay with you.  If not, then I would consider getting a simple band.  It doesn't have to be plain gold/silver.  You could get a nice decorative band that is more in line with your style and that goes with your e-ring.

Yes, that is what I am considering. I'm not going to get a ring that isn't okay for work...so nothing too high profile or pointy or anything like that. As long as I can easily wear gloves it won't be an issue :) I'm still in school right now, and we're allowed to wear e-rings, and I know school is stricter than "the real world"...

I'm kind of a big fan of e-ring/wedding rings being the same. I think you can find some truly stunning, elegant rings that work for both. That being said, if you need it to fit under a glove just be conscious of size. My e-ring is nothing big (not sure the size because it was a family ring), but it's less than a carat and ticks me off under winter gloves. It's also a fairly flat setting. Maybe I'd get used to it if I wore gloves all the time, but I definitely was aware of it ALL winter.
  • I was just thinking since you haven't gotten your e-ring yet, then maybe look into a bezel setting.  I think this type of setting may work well with you being a nurse and always having to put on/take off latex gloves.  Just something to consider

Right now, as a stand-in, I have this: http://www.emitations.com/antique-engagement-ring-rose-gold.html#.VaUZCvlViko and it's great because I have no issues with gloves, so I feel like as long as I don't get anything that's got a higher profile I'll be alright. (I'm currently a home health aide, so I literally have boxes of gloves that I have to use regularly).
  • I agree with Maggie - a bezel setting would work well for you.  When J was looking for rings for me, I asked for something low profile, with a bezel setting that wouldn't catch.  I wear slash gloves for my job (law enforcement), and also need to be mindful that it doesn't catch on anyone if I'm bare-handed.

This is what he came up with - but with a diamond instead of sapphire.  Pretty much the most gorgeous ring in the world (IMHO :) )  Once I saw it, I knew that I'd never be able to put a band with it.

  • I am a nurse, and I wear my e-ring to work with no issues. My FI had the jeweler lower the profile on it so it wouldn't be an issue for the glove reason. A lot of the girls on the unit in the hospital where I work just wear their bands. I'll be getting a pave band to match the band on my e-ring, and more than likely I'll switch to just wearing that to work after FI and I are married because I've noticed the sanitizer foam leaves a film on my diamond.
  • My aunt has just her engagement ring because she couldn't find a band that looked good with it.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14
