I bought the wrong dress!

So long story short a few months back I bought a dress. I liked it, but I didnt love it, and I bought it because my body looked good in it. Well now I have decided to ignore everyone when they say it looks "fine" don't go looking for another dress. In the end I want to be 100% in love with my dress. Even before I got engaged I never pictured me in a ballgown or something with poof! So when I first tried on dresses that were a little more fitted and showed off my curves I freaked and that's when my mom suggested a ballgown. So my question is what should I look for in a dress? I'm pretty "average" I just have pouch in my lower belly area making me look 4 months pregnant.

Re: I bought the wrong dress!

  • Grr my post always cut off after I post them! Basically the rest of the post said.....
What should I look for when I go in Saiturday? I want something with lace and something simple, easy to move in, and not a whole lot of fabric but will hide my pouch. I don't want family coming up to me all night asking if I'm exspecting haha.
  • Try corset backs. They suck you right in! Also, an empire waistline could be great (or terrible), but try that on. And ruching is your friend. Have fun!
  • This is the dress I bought. It's just to poofy for me. I want to be able to move lol! And I was told a corset back is only put in if you gained wait and your dress needs to be let out? I think I'm going to buy one of those spandex belly things from walmart to wear while trying them on to help!
  • Spanx are always good. A full corset back will suck in your tummy and everything else. Many dresses come with them. Is there any way to take out some layers of the dress you bought? I know when I was trying on dresses I asked about having that done on a number of them, and it was an option for them all.
  • Here's another photo of the dress I bought.
  • That's an awesome idea! I didn't even think of that! It would deffently take out some poof! Because this dress has a million layers!

  • Sence your a geniuses
  • The first dress I thought was "the one" I LOVED it! Everything about it! But then got home and looked at the photo and was like woah NO!! It looked terrible on me!!

But the lighting in the store isn't the best, it is not the greatest picture to show the dress, and you loved it so much when you had it on in person.  Maybe you could try that dress on again and see how you feel?

  • I feel lumpy in it lol
  • My honest opinion, I do not like the first dress that you tried on and loved on you.  The ballgown makes your waist look super tiny, while the other dress really does nothing for your shape.  I also do not like the illusion neckline on you.

I don't suggest putting in a corset.  A corset will eliminate a lot of the detail on the back of your dress.

I think once the dress you bought has been altered (the length shortened, the top fitted to you well, and maybe a layer or two of crinoline taken out) you will feel completely different about it.
    Ditto all of this.

  • I agree with Maggie, I think the dress you bought it actually really beautiful on you, and it will fit much better after alterations. If you hate the "poof" as PPs have suggested, see if they can take out some of the fullness. I think it really looks nice on you, and I love the detail!
  • Thanks! This has really put me at ease! I can't wait to see what the finished dress looks like and I think I will love it so much more!! I'm concerned though about taking away too much, I have read sometimes A-Lines (is that what sillioute the dress is?) can make you look pregnant, or maybe that's empire?

You don't look pregnant in your dress.

  • If I take out all the layers do you think it would still hide my belly?

Mostly, because it's not cut to hug your figure. Imagine buying a sundress that's cut the same way, with no poofy layers underneath. I might still get a pair of Spanx just to feel more confident about it, and to keep things looking smooth while sitting and stuff when the skirt might cling to you.

It's empire dresses that supposedly give a pregnant look, and what people really mean is that lots of maternity clothes are cut with empires waists
to hide the belly so clearly that is the only thing that style is used for (which is not true).

Are you taking out all the layers?  I wouldn't do that.  Remove one or two layers to downsize the poof but don't take them all out.

I really am not understanding the whole hiding your belly thing.  I don't see your belly in the pictures you have posted.  I see a beautiful woman in a great ballgown.  So not sure what you are trying to hide since you can't see your belly to begin with.

I see no belly, either. Dittoing what Maggie said.
  • Thanks ladies! Theirs a belly it's just hidden with this dress! I think I'll take out the layer that is put there just for making it poofy and go from their.
  • This is the poof under the two main layers
  • I would be careful about removing that. That stiff crinoline is what helps hold the shape of the skirt. Without it you may lose the overall look. Make sure you speak to a seamstress about this before you make any decisions.

  • Well I have someone who is doing my alterations so I'll talk to them.
  • i wanted to take out the crinoline but the seemstress and owner of the salon said that it would alter the structure of the dress once the dress was hemed and cut to fit my 5'0 frame it felt less heavy and more fit to my shape.

i would suggest taking out another layer from somewhere else in the dress and not the crinoline
  • That really isn't much poof. I suspect you can take it out with no trouble and just add a slip back in (or have the seamstress put a waistband in the clipped-out crinoline) if you decide it needs to be there. Personally, I think it's gorgeous on you as it is.
