Buy or Rent for the Guys?

FI and I are getting ready to shop for the menswear for the wedding. We are thinking grey suits. We may even end up doing vest, button up, tie, and slacks rather than a full suit. Does anybody know if it is cheaper to buy than to rent?

Re: Buy or Rent for the Guys?

  • It really depends on what you want.  But you need to first ask the guys their budget before you even start looking for suits.

The only good thing about going with suits and having the guys buy is that a nice grey suit is always wearable to many things so they will get use out of it.

  • That's what I'm thinking @Maggie0829. I will definitely be asking their budget as well. We want to keep this whole thing as affordable as possible for the wedding party. I may even ask what their preference is.

  • Our guys ended up going with gray Kenneth Cole Suits from Boscovs.  They were $130 each.  One of the guys has already worn his to prom, and they all said they'd prefer to buy than rent.  My FI was in a wedding last year where they rented gray suits for $200 each.
  • Vests are made to be worn under a jacket. If you do not want a "full" suit (i.e. 3-piece), it would be more appropriate to have the men in just jackets/sportscoats and ties or else a button-up with a tie, no vest.

  • I vote for a two piece grey suit.  They cost less than a tuxedo rental, and they guys can get a lot of wear out of them.  They can ditch the jackets to party at the reception.  Vests are close to the body, hot and don't look nice from the back with the metal buckle and cinch strap.  Think of your pictures.

@Doeydo, can you show us some pictures of guys in classic two piece suits?

Renting a gray suit at Men's Wearhouse was $180 and as much as I liked the idea of gray we did black since the GMs already owned them and DH bought a black one for about $130 or $150 on sale and he has it for the future too. Renting a suit seems like a waste of money to me
  • FYI mens warehouse price matched a suite we saw at Macy's that was on sale so be sure to ask about pricing.
  • It depends on their budget.

You could pick out a suit that's in their budget (renting or buying) and let them choose whether they want to rent or buy it.

For our wedding, DH and I asked the guys to where a navy two piece suit and any tie they wanted. some people already had one, some bought theirs, and some rented. We had one guy who couldn't afford to buy/rent anything but had a black tux so he wore that.

As long as you pick something that is in their budgets, you will be fine but be courteous to that.

  • Compare prices. You may be able to get suits online at stores like JCPenny's or Macy's for a cheaper price. Also if you have any K &G stores in your area, check those out, they sometimes do BOGO deals on suits & then the guys can split the costs.

And if you opt for doing just the pants and vests. Then have them buy just pants and a white shirt, you can rent just vests from tux shops. It keeps it way cheaper. This also options the option to just telling them gray pants & white shirt & rent this color vest & tie. This way if they have gray pants already, they can use them, but since their shirts, vests & ties will match, if the pants are different shades of gray, it would still look good.

  • We opted to just rent.  Cost was about $190 each but everything was included and looked very sharp.  We cleared this with each of the guys before making a final decision.

Best man is also best man in a wedding this weekend and they did a pick your own suit so he ended up spending about $130 but not sure if it was the same kind of quality.
  • Renting will probably end up being cheaper, but do your homework and see what you can find once you've made your final decision.

I think asking the guys what their preference is, is a great idea. Maybe even present them with both options if that's affordable.
  • For us, the problem with renting is options. We wanted medium gray suits, which Men's Warehouse didn't offer. Ended up having to settle for a medium gray tux because we hated the light gray suit option. But overall, the rental is going to be cheaper than asking all groomsmen to buy suits. FWIW, a local shop might have more rental options, but we went with MW because our GMs are coming from all over the place, so it's easier to have them go to MW.
