Getting in Shape

When I'm craving X, I'll have Y instead

What are your healthy substitutions for your cravings?

I was just craving Chipotle, and had a TJ's Paneer Tiki Masala instead.  I still get the spicy and the cheese, but at half the calories.

I also eat:

walnuts & blueberries instead of pizza (fat + tangy)

carrots or baked kale chips instead of potato chips.

If I'm craving chocolate I'll melt a dark chocolate square into some skim milk for hot cocoa.

What works for you to satisfy a craving with a healthier option?

  • I actually started doing Hot Coco with a Diet Hot Coco Mix for fewer calories when I want Chocolate.  I have it after dinner, so it feels like desert too :)
  • Instead of ice cream I eat frozen yoplait whipps - it really is just as satisfying and a fraction of the calories and fat.

Instead of chips and dip I do pretzels and laughing cow cheese.

  • I need to start substituting more. I usually go for a piece of fruit instead when I crave junk food.

I've found that not keeping any junk food in the house is a huge help.  I don't really have a choice but to eat the healthier "Y" option.

If I do crave something sweet, I'll usually make myself a small glass of chocolate milk (using Lite Hershey's syrup and fat free milk).

  • My two cravings are either chocolate or vinegar based (buffalo wings, mustard, salt & vinegar chips). For the chocolate cravings I'll grab a small piece of dark chocolate. For the vinegar cravings I'll (and i know this is weird) have a sip of cider vinegar, or I'll make broiled chicken and top w/ some blue cheese crumbles & hot sauce. I also get random cravings for the runny yolk in eggs, so I'll poach an egg and add it to chili or my pasta dish.

  • If I'm truly craving something, I just eat a reasonable amount of what I'm craving.

But some everyday subs I make are: plain lowfat greek yogurt for sour cream, mashed avocado for buttered toast, nuts instead of croutons on top of salads.

Same for me.  I'll just have a little or make a healthier (even if not actually healthy) version.  Like a homemade burger instead of a fast food one, oven fries, oatmeal cookies and such.  i find the at-home recipes can be made WAY healthier than store bought.
  • Chocolate I have a fat free pudding cup!
  • *chips/crackers, I'll have carrots/ cauliflower (crunchy cravings)
*sweets: I'll have sugar free jello or a salad with Ken's lite rasp/walnut dressing (1T dressing, spinach, iceberg, random veggies, cut up almonds and 1T gorgonzola)
*when I crave wine, I'll have a cup of hot tea (on weekdays at least :)
  • Honestly.. If you kick it from your diet, you will RARELY crave it.. I haven't had chocolate in a good 4 months and even when I'm stressed (it used to be my go-to stress food) I don't crave it.. But for those times that I DO want something, I eat it. Just like Anna and J&K mentioned.. It's okay to indulge.. just don't binge :o
