Starting to dread the weekend - a vent

My sister is getting married on Sunday. While she has a lot of really great qualities, organization and planning are not among them. I, on the other hand, am a perpetual list-maker. I had everything diagrammed, I had a full inventory, labeled and numbered boxes, etc. already packed and ready one week before my wedding. I knew that my sister would not do the same, but I was really hoping she would be on top of her shit.

I just got a call from our other sister, who is already in town for the wedding (I fly down tomorrow morning). She called to warn me to be mentally prepared for what I am walking in to. Apparently, sister getting married just now realized that they don't have non-alcoholic drinks; she doesn't know what tables the venue has other than the 80" rounds used for guests (so, she doesn't know where the guest book table, gift table, DJ table, etc. will go, let alone what types of tables the venue has), and she isn't even sure if the caterer is providing beverage dispensers, let alone water. Apparently her apartment looks like a storage unit threw up - there are random decorations in random places, things in trash bags, etc.Her wedding is in less than 48 hours.

I was supposed to help her make her bouquets tomorrow (luckily other sister took over that project, so we know where the flowers are, and she will take the lead on putting bouquets together), and then go to the nail salon, but I think I am going to offer to organize all of her shit tomorrow instead.

My sister is really, really nice, and I know she is trying her hardest, but being organized is just not something she is good at. I just want her to have a good time, and I keep reminding her that as long as the important things like food, drinks, and chairs are taken care of, and as long as she, her FI, the officiant (our dad), and the marriage license all make it to the venue, then that's all that really matters. But she's nitpicking small things - like that the table runners are not the exact same width, instead of focusing on big things. This whole scenario reminds me of all of my recurring nightmares when I was planning my wedding, except it's real life.

I need to take deep breaths, and try to be patient with her (we love each other but bicker a lot). I plan to work my ass off so she has a good time, but I'm beginning to realize that this is going to be a working weekend for me. Sigh.

Sorry, just needed to vent.

  • That's nice of you to attempt to help her. Good luck!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • You sound like a saint. Personally, I'd have a "flight delay" and hit up the bar for a few hours after I got to town. It's hard for me to deal with other people's disorganization.

I WISH I could just not deal with it... But I generally feel compelled to make order from chaos, and I really want her to have a good day. Luckily she's in good spirits, so at least it's not disorganized bridezilla I'm dealing with. I have three sisters, and we all tend to rally for each other. Honestly, this really makes me grateful that I was so organized for my own wedding.

  • My BFF is in a wedding at the end of the month, and she just texted to say that she misses my wedding.  The bride is a lovely girl, but planning isn't her strong suit.

I hear ya on the sister thing.  Thankfully, mine is as organized as I am - but I still drove 20 hours round trip, every three weeks, for the six months of her engagement. I would do anything for that woman.  We're both super detail oriented, but for some reason we both have an as-yet-unidentified threshold level where we nitpick and nitpick and then suddenly decide 'nope, not worth the brain space any more.'  And then we move on and are perfectly happy.

Good luck this weekend!  I'm sure with so much fire power between the four of you, it'll turn out beautifully.
