Do you have an anniversary tradition?

I am crushing on @cu97tiger 's signature with the holding last year's picture on each anniversary. Does anyone else have something they make sure to do each year? Even like going to a specific restaurant or anything? Our first (wedding) anniversary is coming up in Sept and I'd love to start a tradition but don't know what!

Re: Do you have an anniversary tradition?

  • H and I actually watch our wedding video, which is cheesy I know, with a bottle of bubbly.  I was sort of surprised that H ended up getting me the "traditional" gift of paper for the first anniversary but we've both followed that trend too (cotton/china was last year)...this year is leather I think?
  • We have been doing the pictures (obviously) but may stop next year, since the original wedding photo is getting REALLY small. We might do it every five years instead. We'll see!

We also stick to the traditional anniversary gifts. I'm not sure we'll keep doing that forever, but it has worked so far.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • We haven't had a wedding anniversary yet, but for our dating anniversary we go to the same Mexican restaurant every year for dinner and drinks. We had one of our first dates there and we just love the food.
  • @minskat30 - I think it's so fun that you and your H follow the "traditional" gifts thing. I think it would make me be creative each year.

FI and I don't have any traditions really. The past two years we drove up to Nederland for our anniversary. I don't know if we will again this year. It's a cute little mountain town but there's not a lot to do, plus traffic can be a pain because people want to go see the leaves change.

We've done a long weekend for each of our dating anniversaries. I'm not sure if it will change for marriage anniversaries, but for year 1 we went to Bend, OR and drank a ton of beer, then last year we did Arizona and the grand canyon! We were trying to plan our vacation this year around our anniversary, but Alaska cruises don't run in November! Weak...

ETA: We've never done anniversary presents, and the trip costs were both split down the middle.

  • We haven't planned anything for anniversary, but probably going to the Cupcake Lounge. I want to say we'll get the same flavour as wedding .... but tbh it'll depend on the moment :P
  • Not really. We always went/go to dinner on our dating anniversary (just celebrated year 8 in June) and we've gone away both years for our wedding anniversary (Costa Rica last year, Savannah/Tybee Island this year). I hope we can keep that up!

  • We don't have anything we do specifically but we like to follow the traditional anniversary gifts for each year. For example, last year was paper so I got DH tickets to the Falcon's game and he got me tickets to see "Dirty Dancing" at the Fox. We also did the traditional eat your top wedding cake layer for our first. It was pretty good actually because I wrapped it up like a mummy and froze it.

This year is cotton and I'm thinking something a little more personal...like maybe monogrammed handkerchiefs since I know he doesn't have any of those. He also doesn't own a bath robe lol so that's another option.
  • @southernpeach89 My husband hates bathrobes for some reason. I think they're the best thing ever, especially in the winter, so comfy! His parent's bought him one this past Christmas and he won't wear it. Extra one for me!

  • Oh to answer the OP- obviously we haven't had a wedding anniversary yet but I think we've always just gone out to dinner for our dating anniversary. It would be nice to go away somewhere every wedding anniversary if we could afford it. To me it kinda sucks that our wedding anniversary is June because it's so hot everywhere.

  • @southernpeach89 - I got H a bathrobe, some coffee cups and some shirts last year.  He wore the bathrobe once unfortunately but now I steal it and drown in it (he's 6'3" to my, being generous here, 5'5").  ;)
  • @labro You're right! I'm so used to DH just being naked that I don't think about these things lol. He probably won't wear it at all during the Summer and in the Winter he usually just throws on a sweat shirt. I'M NIXING THE ROBE!
  • @southernpeach89 My H is the same. I often come home from work and he's on the couch naked so a robe wouldn't work for him either hahah. And when our friend recently asked "Dude it's 90 out, how can you not have air conditioning?!"- my H replied "Well I'd rather have this one (points to me) naked- she's too cold with A/C and it's bad enough she bundles up 6 months a year, I don't need to make it 12!" hahahah

We really wanted to go away for our anniversary but with buying the new house and it needs some new furniture and grill and stuff we really can't afford a trip. We're taking a staycation so I hope to start a tradition of something that week. Fancy restaurant in Boston or something. We didn't celebrate dating anniversary, as we don't have a date. It was weird on & off when we met so we never knew what date to go by.

  • Our dating anniversary tradition is to go away on a ski trip - which is how H proposed on our 9th anniversary!  Our 10th we ended up seeing The Hobbit since the lack of snow out here meant the ski hills were closed.  I was super bummed.

Our 1st wedding anniversary is coming up, and we're hoping to go back to the Rockies/Emerald Lake for it!  We shall see. We don't have much time off since the week before is BFF's wedding, and we have to fly home for that (can't take off too much time from work for both).

  • @kaitlynmichelle I can't believe your anniversary is coming up! I feel like you just got married a couple of months ago. Time flies!

@lavenderfields13 I know, right?!  I can't believe it either.  We recently (FINALLY) printed out a few wedding photos for the apartment so I've been all giddy looking at them.

  • We usually get Chinese food and that's about it.

We used to get Chinese food together all the time in HS.

  • Well, to answer OP's question, we've had 39 wedding anniversaries, and we hardly bother to celebrate them anymore.  We do special traveling once or twice a year, so the date thing just isn't that big a deal. Next year we will be cruising the Rhone River in Provence - maybe. Like I said, our love is more important than a date on the calendar.
